Can a 16 year old get work experience at a bank or any investment company?
I'm 16 years old and I graduate next month. After I graduate, I have 2 and a half months of summer holiday, I want to do some sort of work experience or volunteering at an investment company or bank if its possible. If so, how can I apply and the requirements. I'm based in the UK, thank you for reading.
Martin Shkreli did
Do you know how he did it?
Yes - connections and Y13 programs
How can I make connections ?
LinkedIn/Family.
Reach out for coffees with VPs/Associates asking to learn more about their industry. Show passion and interest for the industry throughout the chat.
Oh God it's happening
I'm all for you going out there and learning more about the industry but definitely save some time to have fun/ travel/ hang out with your friends. If I could go back I'd make sure to treasure those days. You can spend the rest of your adult life working.
This. Especially if you're graduating HS at 16.
Things you can do to buff up your resume and show your work ethic is to do something over the summer that differentiates you. Start a lawn care service, build a client base, hire some friends. Show that you're good with people and have grit and business savvy. Use the $ to start a trading account and get some market exposure. It'll help.
at 16 you should be having fun and causing a ruckus with your pals. Just try to limit the trouble with the law. Enjoy it.
Just go play in the park or watch cartoons. What the hell is wrong with kids these days. "can I work at an IB when I am 16" FFS. You'll have the rest of your life to rot away in a cubicle behind a computer screen..
In fact, interviewers would actually be creeped out and seriously question your mental sanity if you were seeking out banking experience at 16.. Don't rush it kid.
Yeah, you're right. All of my mates are going abroad and busy with their girlfriends so I'm bored.
I'm sure you can but I personally think it would be meaningless experience. I would not find it impressive on a resume because it would be just so clearly a connection letting you sit in on meeting and stuff, and if I were an analyst at whatever bank you went to, I wouldn't let you touch any of my decks or models with a 10 foot stick. No offense to you at all, but I really can't see any stressed overworked analyst trust a 16 year old with their work. Like many 16 year olds can't even drive.
Honestly if you really want to do something that one may see as impressive or value adding, do something entrepreneurial. No IB or finance work you do now will really be seen as a positive or a negative, IMO. But honestly homie just have fun. Hang with your friends. Do stuff. You seem smart enough and I imagine you'll have plenty of time to intern in the future. Better yet, go drink. A lot of my best friends are my friends from high school. The memories I have with them, especially some of the ones from senior year or that summer before college are more valuable to me than my work.
I can't drink until 18 and good point.
