What Would YOU Change About LinkedIn?

I saw a great post from @ThinkorSwim2015" on the “cringeyness” of LinkedIn, and everyone had their own opinions.

So what would YOU change to the site?

Remember it’s supposed to be a professional site, but it’s become something totally different.

What would the perfect LinkedIn be to you? ALSO do you use angel list? Do you prefer it?

Hate to sound elitist but I feel like their should be more vetting for who is allowed to even make an account. There are ppl on there who make fake accounts or spam everyone’s inbox. Not to mention adding the story option makes it too comparable with Facebook in my opinion

absolutely. ive seen people on there unprofessional enough to complain about their current employer and compensation and preech about wanting a new job. normally i dont judge but their company is literally on your profile. it is so messed up

Their desire too expand has caused them to basically turn it into another social media. I think they should stay more niche. People will be able to pay more for services if they knew they wouldn’t have to deal w all the BS

Just the overall culture. I feel like every time I log on it’s a corny motivational speech, fake stories, or kiss ass posts.

People blast those posts with likes too. Yes I have an angel list and they can be comparable but it is more niche and far less used

Change the fact that they restrict the people you see and that they make it about connecting with people you know. I can do that on Facebook, I want to meet professionals I’ve YET to meet

Well, I guess some things that could make LinkedIn a perfect site for me are fast reaction time from its support team, absence of scams or good moderation to manage them at least and keeping my identity private. There are a lot of weaknesses and I am not sure that somebody will change it soon.

I use LinkedIn as a rolodex, a job search tool, and, at times, as a way to find cool articles posted by my connections. I would venture that most business professionals only use it for 1-3 of these things.

The only problems with LinkedIn are when people use it for anything except for these things and I wish LinkedIn would come down much harder on memes, photos of kids, bullshit "inspirational" stories that never happened, and other facebook-esque posts or anything that is explicitly not business related.

The thing is, they won't, because allowing it gets them more users. To be honest though, I don't use LinkedIn enough for it to elicit anything more than a weekly eyeroll from me. It's not that big of a deal really.

Both great points! I go on mostly to connect w entrepreneurs/other VCs and events but I always see posts about being "honored" to receive a position.

I think its become common place to say these things but I find it a bit strange to post all about a company you are just starting for. Maybe its just me?

I don't like it how LinkedIn shows who is looking at your profile and shows when you look at other people's profile. It's creepy and makes me not want to browse around.

Yeah I want to check and see what someone’s experience is or where they went to school, etc. to look for connections but it’s super weird when they get a view from me and I don’t want to say anything. They’ll connect with me and then that connection is pointless because I found nothing. Seems like that feature should be removed.

I feel like most of these problems can be fixed simply by cleansing your connection list/liked companies and interests. I have not seen a single one of these cringe posts everyone complains about everyday on my TL because I only accept connections from people I know or people who send personalized notes with their connection requests

The ability to organize your contacts in groups, without those contacts knowing they're part of a group. Something like "people who work in x industry" or "people who live in y". The search function can do this, but the search queries are fairly limited imo. When Google+ was a thing I think they had something along those lines.

Saw a great idea (on LinkedIn itself lol). Make a sales channel/label system so people who message you to “network” solely intending to sell you something label messages as sales. On the flip side, if you are interested in being sold something, you set that you are open to x. Saves time on both sides then.

Not a perfect system but would definitely make it much less annoying as 90% of the random connections/messages I get are from people trying to sell me something or move my funds to them at Northwestern Mutual but they frame it as a genuine networking message initially.
