Scenario: Handling Boss’s Feedback Request
My friend Lance had an interesting situation at work, and I’m looking for another perspective on it. (All names are fake)
Lance’s friend John quit his HF job because he didn’t like his boss and John stated he’s leaving to pursue academia. The boss calls a meeting to inform everyone John has left. He describes John’s performance as poor and that John was going to return to academia.
Following the meeting, the boss asked for feedback on how he handled the situation. Lance gives feedback that describing John’s performance was unnecessary and irrelevant and appears as the boss is trying to save his own image. The boss is outraged that John could have that opinion and describes John as irrational for possibly having this opinion.
Do you think John should have given this feedback or kept his mouth shut even though the boss asked?
What do you think of the boss in this situation?
My feedback is that everyone reading this obviously knows this is about you, not "Lance" and "John," so stop trying to be cryptic.
