MM Corporate Banking

Hello everyone,

Was hoping to get some clarification on a career path that I have been researching. It would be for a corporate banker position with some sponsor coverage in a regional I guess you could say bottom tier city / state. There would be an option to go into the sales side or risk / diligence side. With that in mind I had a couple questions:

  • How rigid are the career paths in corporate banking? Is it common to ask to come in at a higher level if current comp is comparable?

  • If on the sales side, what does a typical day look like for a junior banker? Lots of cold calling? Or is there a portfolio of accounts given day one? How frustrating is the initial ramp?

  • How does one differentiate from competitors? How hard is it to win business if these are pretty easy loans that fit in all of these banks wheelhouse?

  • What are the compensation packages that typically exist here? How does it typically differ from sales to risk? I would be interested to hear about the incentive based component of the comp. What metrics is it based on? Stock options?

  • What are some other questions that you would ask to learn more about the position?
