Director 'thanked me for my interest' - is it over?

What are some ways to gage that you did well on an interview vs. they're not taking you through your interviewer's interactions and what they say to you towards the end of the interview?

eg. I followed up with the director and he said "We really appreciate you taking the time and for your interest in X firm".

I know I'm reading too much into this but this sounds dismissive. is it over for me?

Just like you sometimes don't know what to say in emails, directors have the same issues too... it's just a boilerplate response to your email fired off in half a second. It's a good sign that they replied at all.

Verbatim, I got the same response from a Director of a PE shop I interviewed at last year. I worried a bit about the email (in terms of meaning for their process) but I realized I could not dwell on it too much since I had to keep pushing on other processes I was involved in.

I did not get the role (which I had a sense for based on how one of the interviews went), but things eventually worked out. I would say it is near impossible to derive any further meaning from the email as it basically turns into a Rorschach Test depending on who reads it.

This is a tough one.

If its a sweatshop - then yes you'll probably get the job If it is a big shop - probably being polite and but a no-go

Though surprising a big bank director would even reply. That's rare. So even if you don't get the job make sure to have a follow-up call and thank his for his time and get any feedback and say that you'd love to stay in touch.

Sounds like this is giving you anxiety and I get it! My best piece of advice is not to pick the words apart. For all you know this was a generic copy and paste message or it was a response when they rarely reply to anyone.

No need to get yourself stressed because no matter how much you dig you won't get your answer until they tell you. I hope by now you know and have a peace of mind.
