Summer Analyst 2020 – Study Abroad Question
I'm aware this question has been asked before, but I'm a junior at a non-target and I'm hoping to get a Summer Analyst role in 2020 (IB or not). I spent the whole summer throwing in apps everywhere (both IB and other divisions/types of firms) and so far have converted one into a first-round interview at a MM investment bank next week. I've been considering going abroad for a while, mainly to improve my language skills in one of my majors, but being away from the US for a whole semester sounds like it can cause some problems.
Basically, what I'm asking is, is junior spring a bad time to go abroad and still be able to get an SA offer? And two, since no big firms recruit at my school, is the hiring timeline shifted? I've noticed that recruiting for investment banking and really any other desirable finance positions seems to be shifting earlier and earlier, but I can't seem to figure out how different it is for non-targets other than the fact being considered for a role is so much harder.
With regards to SA 2020, all processes will 100% be done by the end of the year so whether or not you go abroad in the spring kinda doesn't matter unless you have literally 0 internships for the coming summer.
Spring is a good time to go abroad as long as your end date is before the SA start date. Most SAs start training in early June or end of May, and some European schools end that week or later. It's a huge hassle to move finals or come late to training.
As for recruiting, you are correct that it has moved up, but it's more towards sophomore year so junior spring you should be signed. You didn't mention if you're networking or not but that is the only way you can get a foothold from a non-target.
