Is Your Watch Nicer Than Your Boss's?

An interesting article written in the WSJ that documents watch etiquette and touches on the progression of watch wearing in the workplace. There is an unsaid rule of sorts, that says that you shouldn't wear a watch nicer than your boss. However, in the modern world of smart watches do people really pay attention to what is on your wrist?

Watches are often seen as a status symbol; however, much of it goes unnoticed in the more casual tech environment:

In January, he purchased a Rolex and braced for snipes from his Apple Watch- and Casio-wearing co-workers, but so far no one has even acknowledged the pricey timepiece.

Do you believe in the idea that you shouldn't wear a watch nicer than your boss's? Is there more of an emphasis or an acknowledgement of what is on your wrist depending on what industry you are in?

DJ Sol wears a Shinola chronograph. Costs about 750. You may see a couple daytonas, subs, maybe a patek. I think once your above associate its irrelevant. Some people do not care about watches others love them. If your boss cares about your watch he is not a good boss. He should care about your performance. That being said an analyst walking up with a Rolex comes off as a douchebag.

I'm a junior, have a few nice watches but I wear a Casio FW91 to work. It's $10 and serves its purpose...I don't want to be seen with a Rolex+ right now, I know most ppl won't care but I'd rather not find the one who does.

Nobody cares. Some people are into it as a hobby... Personally I don't judge people based on their watch unless it's something disgusting like a Hublot.

Now, with that said...I have definitely had an easier time on the networking end when I run into another watch whore and at a certain level it is expected to an extent.

The good news is that it's easy to buy/sell watches profitably. I have 6 figures in watches and nowhere near that much money into them because I always buy low when I see a deal on a model I'm looking for via WatchPatrol and then immediately list almost anything I buy on forums/feEbay/etc.

Agree with the article. It might be a low probability event, but not worth it. Even if your boss isn't into watches somebody else at your boss' level can throw you under the bus. I personally never had a boss who wore a good watch, and hence my watches are strictly for social occasions.

Also, it tells your boss you have more money to spend on watches than him and that thought might cross his mind come bonus season.

Personal opinion, I hate Hublot, it seems they are trying to represent quality when they were early established in the game. I wear a Seiko gold, it means a lot because my Dad gave it to me because it also has Arabic font on it for the weekdays. My dream watch is either Audemars Piguet Royal Offshore or Rolex Rainbow watch, or Omega Sea-master.
