Unless you work at Verizon Wireless (and you're one of those guys who wears the burgandy dress shirt with the matching burgandy tie) then drop the jewelry dude.... Where do you work, anyway?

hahaha great comparison. Spot on.

This is probably one of my favorite posts as of late. I might throw you a silver banana, but the sad thing is I'm not convinced you're joking.

I was thinking the same thing. Board has been slow this weekend and this post just made my Sunday evening.

Oh and the imagery about the Verizon is right on. I used to see a guy just like that every time I went to the mall.

BocaYankee:
Let me point something out though-this jewelery is "high-end" the bracElet is over 1k, the watches obviously, and the chain is about 1k too.

This is another, more serious issue, Boca. This level of thinking that, because its "expensive," you should wear it to an interview (or anywhere where high-finance people congregate) is not sound logic, unless you are looking for an excuse to look foolish. 24" spinning rims are "expensive" too, but that doesn't mean you should put them on your car.

Wow, could I fly to Miami and interview you? I'd bow in your accessory greatness.

I don't know what I would say or think if I went back to my Alma Mater and interview a kid with a gold bracket, chain, and a Pinky ring. I don't know if I would be impressed that he would be ballzy enough to wear that to an interview and his creds speak for themselves or just start watching Jersey Shore on my phone during the whole interview. Better use of time, a tad more entertaining, and probably essentially the same material anyways that would be said in the interview.

Good luck anyhow.

Ari Gold-are you a U Alum? Love Entourage btw. Let me point one thing out-during interviews I'll just wear a nice, conservative suit. I'm referring more to work dress in general. Besides, your Jersey Shore reference(never seen that show) is somewhat ironic because EVERYBODY at the U is either from Jersey, New York, Mass. or Conn., and lots of the kids here wear gold chains, etc.

LOL, who is this kid ? First you thought you could pull $250k, straight out of college on some other thread. Now your asking for tips on buying a pinky ring to go along with you bracelets and such. I understand your a wealthy college kid, so am I trust me. But if you don't learn humility you will never make it in ibanking, because lets face it analysts are at the bottom of the food chain.

BocaYankee:
Some posters have tried to make the comparison between pinky rings and "spinners" or whatever on SUVS tires. I don't think they're anything alike. Here's why-jewelry appreciates in value(generally) stupid rims are just something wanna gangstas blow their money on.

Okay let's end this. Generally people think your question is stupid. And obviously you don't were pinky rings on ibanking interviews, in fact you shouldn't wear anything that draws attention to yourself.

Secondly you could be studying and working on landing an iBanking interview rather than worrying about your appearance. Pinky rings and flashy stuff in banking culture is typically reserved for senior staff, (eg. Associates, MDs,VPs)

LOL. Thanks for that insightful analysis, Boca.

I don't give a damn that gold appreciates or that rims don't. The point is that extra jewelry AND spinners are great if you're a rapper, a pro athlete, a street pharmacist, generally someone whose profession doesn't look down on being tacky or ostentatious or flagrant. Investment banking, Wealth management, high-finance-in-general does not, however-- conservative is better, and no MD is EVER going to appreciate you wearing a gold watch and chain and bracelet because you believe its "an appreciating asset."

If you want a job, don't wear it. If you're not open-minded enough to take suggestions on something as elementary as this, then I suggest you go work at the Verizon store. They'll appreciate your Jersey Shore style.

Since noone will answer your question, I will.

Yes, sport the pinky ring. Hell, sport two. You have two pinkies, don't you? Nothing says money like that, and you've got to spend money to make money.

Also sport the expensive gold. Since you are in Miami and the culture is more laid back, I would also go with no tie, open collar and no undershirt to sport your chest hair. Banks want to hire men, not college boys.

Let us know how it goes.

one of the best threads EVER!

bocaboy, aside from losing the jersey shore attitude, i'd suggest losing your capitalized "born'n'bred 4 success and achievement" signature.

the real world is not run by college kids. i suggest losing everything non-standard and learning everything starting from speech through fashion and probably humor as well from the basics from the people you want to be like (ie your interviewer/future boss). that'll be your safe way to success.

Damn Boca,

I'm sorry, I don't want to be flaming and ranting here, but its people like you Boca that make me cringe when I contemplate putting my foot forward and break into banking as I'm worried about other work peers possessing your personality.

If your defense to wear such extravagant, non-classy, and flashy jewelry because it is an appreciating asset, then invest in your own jewelry store or keep it in a box. I don't mean to speculate, but you seem like one of those individuals that will only define himself based upon the bills in your wallet. As you go through life and actually encounter some hardships, you'll begin to realize that maybe you should drop the "Look at me, I'm rich bitch" persona because the majority of people (or at least the people worth getting to know on a personal level) will not care.

Its funny too. Some of the most wealthiest people I know are one's that are very subtle and one would never expect how many projects they have their hands in. On the other hand, some of the people I thought were wealthy as a child ended up being nothing but an insecure front.

There's nothing wrong with wanting wealth and success, however if your seeking it solely to showcase to others for their approval, then your sliding down a slippery slope.

Very, very true.

Another great quote from Chris Rock-- "You think Bill Gates got some rims on his car???!!!"

Lol, or how about . . . "I'm not talking about rich, I'm talking about wealth. Whats the difference between being rich and being wealthy? Shaq is rich, the white man signing Shaq's checks is WEALTHY"

Or this one . . . "If Bill Gates woke up one morning with Oprah Winfrey's net worth, he'd jump out a fucking window!!"

No, vinyard vines is not too flashy, wear it if you want. It all depends on who you are interviewing with / group culture etc. Goldman NY is probably not the place to show off your laid back coastal lifystyle representing "the good life". Something conservative, classy, with a good knot and modest pattern should do. If you're in the south, Houston energy groups, etc. VV may be alright.

Now to this kid with the pinky ring. No way he is being serious, this kid is rediculous. He's kidding, he has to be. Great laughs. I'll hold back on all that could be said, just make sure you rock the rose colored shades when you get to the interview so they know you really mean business.

Pay the piper

Go for the ring, don't listen to other people...They are lame and jealous.

If you r interviewing in NYC, drop the Tissot, swing by Canal Street and get at least one gold watch from Rolex, a nice one.

You gonna rock those interviews. You are one the right track.

and if it includes a pinky-ring somewhere in that god-forsaken ensemble, it better also include a fur coat, a diamond-tipped cane, and a hat with a feather in it.

BocaYankee:
So I'm wondering, i'm thinking about getting a nice gold and diamond pinky ring-are these still fashionable? For the curious, I already have a gold braclet, a gold chain, and wear either my Movado or Tissot watch.

Apologies for contributing a serious comment, but I think any prospective monkey should abide by the rule that the total cost of your outfit should be significantly less than that of your interviewer. So even if your bracelets etc are "super classy" it's a no-go unless you're interviewing with your local corner shop.

I'd say you could rock a signet ring in Europe, provided it has your family crest on it, provided your family actually has a crest of course. (So, for the majority of people it's a no-go)

Dunno about the US though, but if in doubt -- leave it at home.
