Google or Consulting (BTA)!??

Hello everyone

I'm really needing some help here in deciding between two enticing job offers.... The offers are between the Google account manager position and a consulting position (BTA from Deloitte Consulting). In addition, Im also waiting to hear back from Microsoft for the product manager role.

I'm a senior in college now so my concerns are similar to many as far as job satisfaction, work life balance, growth opportunities, and exit strategies..... I do wanna say that I LOVE Google and the Googleplex blew me away when I visited and I really do see myself living an fulfilling and happy life in the Bay area. The job they are offering me is mainly account management for a book of business of larger clients (like Expedia) and doing primarily consultative sales (data driven, achievable ROI, recommendations for solution strategies, etc.) And I have the chance to apply into the program that puts you on the track for strategy and biz development after one year.

However, consulting is also enticing to me because the traveling seems to make an interesting lifestyle (with the points, etc.) and I can get exposure to a wider array of industries. Furthermore, a firm like Deloitte has much more structured promotion and and training programs, which seems to be lacking at Google? and they are paying a lot more $$ so I dunno....

At the end of the day, my goal is to get into a MBA program at Harvard/Stanford and I know only Google can get me there. My only concern is that it is sales and Im not sure just exactly how sales-related the job really is. I do understand that getting the account manager position right out of school is very fortunate as many people have to go through being an OSO associate and whatnot before being promoted into it. I just wanted to get people's thought on what to go with.

Thanks!

Tag on 25% to the google offer for the improvement in quality of life over Deloitte. Also, I have heard that being a high performer at google will blow away being a high performer at someplace like a consulting firm - even if you kick a ton of ass at Deloitte they will still drag their feet before rewarding you. At google, they will make a more honest effort to keep you happy.

That being said, if you dont expect to be in the top 1-3% of all performers, you can probably make more money in the next decade in consulting, though you will burn out from the travel before its all said and done. You will not be traveling first class, you will not be staying in executive suites, and when you are not at the client site in saskatchewan you will be glued to your laptop shitting out airline peanuts in your hotel room.

Still not sure if I want to spend the next 30+ years grinding away in corporate finance and the WSO dream chase or look to have enough passive income to live simply and work minimally.

Deloitte is a sweatshop.

Just FYI, the turnover rate there is fairly high.

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

I will say as an intern there last summer that I loved the place.

You should go over deloitte any day of the week.

Ill put it to you this way

Food 3x a day 20 days a month for 12 months (you can occasionally sneak food home (some peeps do this)): $600X12= 7200 yr

Free doctor visits (unlimited) 100* 8 at least for the year = 800

Unprecidented access to technology = priceless

Likely bonus / gifts = .2 to the salary you have so maybe if you got offered 50 that is 10k

Transportation to and from googleplex = 7000 yr in gas

World class gym 1k yr

If you were offered 50 you should consider to be the equivalent of at least 76k

are you guys kidding me?

consulting>>account manager

as an account manager you are basically selling online advertisements all day. you don't gain the breadth and experience of all different industries as you do in consulting.

sure google may have its perks and it has a great brand, but do you really want to be on the phone all day?

GeekyGirl is not giving an accurate portrayal of Deloitte. You by no means do exciting work with a breadth of experience in all different industries as she seems to suggest. If it was MBB this would of course be a different matter, but I wouldn't follow this rhetoric.

If you get the product manager job at Microsoft take it, if Harvard is your end goal that's be the best of your options, Google would be #2

good thing you asked.

I just got a rough figure on compensation over the phone for Google.

Deloitte will give 70+10, possible performance bonus but prolly not too much Google will give base+30% performance bonus+stock options. Given the current price its stocks are trading at, it comes out to around 73k if I sell the stocks. Add in the perks, it comes to around 80k. That's in the bay area so I guess I should just subtract around 15k?

At the end of the day, I dont wanna let comp sway me too much, especially given that Google's offer was alot higher than I expected.

At the end of the day the chance to get into a stop B school like Harvard is more important for me than anything else. I feel like the BTA role at Deloitte would lock me in the IT area and make it very hard for myself to distinguish myself. Can someone shed some light on that? At the same time, I have the opportunity to apply into Google's strategy rotation program if I end up being a high performer, which would be a straight shot to HBS or Stanford. At the end of the day, Google is alot more dynamic and unpredictable while Deloitte seems to have a much more structured career path. Pros and cons?

lastly, Im still waiting on the Product manager role at Microsoft. that'll be a real hard decision if this one comes thru too....

Have read the post on Google before. The guy got the exact same offer as mine and his feedback seemed to be very positive. Thank you for the post on IT consulting. The things described in that post are my exact fears about getting into IT. Even though Im an IT major in college, I found out through my last summer internship that its not something that excites me whatsoever.

After alot of thinking and discussion with friends/family, Im pretty sure that Google is the only way for me, especially with the opportunity to shoot for the job I'd die for (their strategy rotation program). at the end of the day, its the energy, people, and dynamic work environment that stimulate and inspire me and Google has got it all. But again, if the PM position at Microsoft comes through its a different story.

I feel extremely lucky as people that get interviews from Google are in the single digits here at my school. I'm looking to succeed at the good ol' Googleplex and blow those Ivy Leagues out of the water. My motivation is through the roof and cant wait to move out to San Fran.

Thanks for your input guys!

Hahaha... This is so crazy because I was faced with the EXACT SAME dilemma as you were this very same time last year. I was torn between consulting opportunities and a job at Google. I decided to take the job at Google as an account manager in Online Sales. At first... I wasn't exactly excited about my decision as my consulting and banking friends were making more money than me (so it seemed.) But the experience here has been amazing! And as far as pay goes, when you account for all of the perks, bonuses, insurance, stock options, etc., your total compensation package is equally competitive AND your quality of life is waaaaay better. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message.

hey Morehouse, I have made the decision to go with Google as an account manager as well! Moving to San Fran in September to join the OMAP. Incredibly pumped =) I actually did send you a message a while back with some more specific questions regarding the position. Lemme know what your thoughts are!

Also, any recommendations for where to live and how to best find roommates? I wanna live somewhere where everything is within arms reach with a young population. where are most OMAP people located?

Thanks!
