A few weeks ago I finished interviewing for MBA consulting internships and wanted to capture some of my thoughts while they're still fresh. There are lots of good resources for case interviews available, but most of the truly great advice I received for behavioral interviews was from personal connections. Below is my overview of tips for succeeding in the process. This is meant to be thorough, and reflects my experience through 20+ interviews. That said, it is likely not exhaustive, and I welcome any additions or comments you can provide. I'll add sections or elaborate, as appropriate. Acing

Hi guys, I have an interview this week (on Tuesday) with the analyst, who I think is also the director of research on the sell side with a large organization. Any idea what to expect/what to be prepared for? He's one of the top in the sector that he covers. He's aware that I don't have experience in this sector at all. Thanks for any help!!

In Vanity Fair's latest expose on Goldman Sachs, Lloyd Blankfein cites Goldman's "culture" as the compass that allowed the firm to navigate the financial storm of 2008. At every i-bank on-campus presentation the firm representative at the front of the room will harp on the incredible "culture" at their firm. At Google, employees get messages on their lunch break. Is this "culture"? This word is flung around without a lot of context or specifics. If you are still in college and haven't spent a ton of time within an organization, the concept of corporate culture may be even more enigmatic to you

I just got off a 2nd round interview with a S&T desk. The interview format: 3 MDs got on the phone 1 by 1 to interview me. First MD: I absolutely bombed, was beyond horrid. I couldn't even do basic calculations because of nerves Second MD: Did pretty well, no errors, answered every question thoroughly, but took an extremely long pause on one question and asked my interviewer to repeat his question. Third MD: Crushed it At the end of the call the Third MD asked me what I knew about options, to which I replied "I have a working knowledge of options and the purposes they serve, but I am not familiar with the nitty gritty details, and I have never traded options before." He ends the call by telling me to learn options and be ready to talk about them on Monday.

Hello! So, I have recently been invited for a second round interview at a fairly large Canadian bank for a SA position. I had also previously posted about getting invited to the first round: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ib-summer-analyst-interview-help-… As I mentioned in the last thread, I have a non-business background, but with some non-finance business experience. My first interview was pretty much a behavioural interview, so I was wondering, what can I expect for a second round interview? I do know that there will be multiple consecutive interviews on the same day

Hi everyone, I just came out of an interviwe and I didn't do very well...it seems like i often have trouble connecting with my interviewers. Can you give me some tips on how to improve? Are there any good books I can read on that? How can I connect with my interviewer better? Thanks!!!

Hey guys (in the male and female sense). Time-sensitive question for you. For those who have experience, what do you think? Bank A (we'll call it) in NYC wants to do a phone interview. Bank B in NYC wants me to actually come in for an interview. Banks C and D: I've had phone screens with them, and they want to proceed, but they know I'm thousands of miles away. It would be nice to be able to do multiple interviews in NYC if I fly all the way out. Any suggestions? Do I request an in-person interview with Banks A, C, D? I don't want to come off pushy. What's the protocol on this? Thanks for your

Hello, Question: Which company is a better investment? Company A: 20% Operating Margin, 10% ROIC or Company B: 10% Operating Margin, 20% ROIC Assume both companies are in same sector and direct competitors. Also which company may be a better investment for the long run? This is all of the information that is available for the question. Thanks for the help

Well, the last step for this company is a group interview. Basically, the final 5 of us are going to be interviewed in the same room, and the same time (all of us are from the same class). Any tips? I think it might make it a bit tougher seeing as though everyone is in your class. A friend of mine who is also interviewing asked the HR lady how many of us they will be taking, she said that she cannot give a number because she doesn't want to stress him out, but that they are not just taking one.

Hey fellow monkeys, I have a second round phone interview regarding IB summer analyst internship with MD of a boutique firm located in Charlotte NC. I go to school in Midwest and I'm pretty sure that some of the questions at the interview will be "Why this firm? Why this location?" While I did quite a lot of research on the company and I can answer the first question, I don't have a clear answer to the question regarding location. How can approach this question? SB to everyone who gives me some good ideas! Thanks

Guys, Wanted a second opinion on something. I had an interview with a consulting firm last week and they got back to me saying that a few of their consultants would like to take me out for lunch. Pls note that I still have not heard back with regard to my interview outcome. The reason they give for the second meeting is that some of the consultants didn't have a chance to speak with me over the informal lunch that was provided on the interview day itself. I noticed on the interview day that office attire seemed to be business casual - I was wondering if I could dress in that manner for the second meeting (i.e. suit but without the jacket and tie and wearing a formal sweater)? Also, any tips on what to expect? Many thanks!

Hello There, I Have applied for Deloitte Tax Consulting position. I am going on an office visit at Deloitte on17th of September but that is from my own research not part of the process. I have my first interview next month and I am wondering what is a whole process like. How many interview are meant to be and what are the components of each interview. This is very important to me as I can plan accordingly, since I have still some school left. Your input is very much appreciated!!

Hi all, Hope you guys are doing well. I go to a target in the UK and recently landed on a second round interview for a SA position in a BB risk team in London. Since this is in the midst of exam periods in the UK and they're not recruiting many, I'm guessing they're conducting a phone interview. What I'm wondering is--an interviewer asked me to have a paper and a calculator in front of me during the interview. I've done some phone interviews and had brain teasers from time to time, but without a calculator. What kind of questions do I have to expect? More advanced brain teasers? Accounting

I signed up to have my HBS interview in mid-Feb and have been trying to prepare by talking to as many alums as I can get to listen to me. Many are a few years removed and have advised me to try to get as fresh a perspective as possible since the school "changes their interview style often." Despite the possibility of them being outdated, I have a couple of mock interviews lined up. Much of the content on this site and the web in general has been useful, though new and recent advice/perspectives are always helpful. Have any of you been in touch with current/recent alums and/or have any words of

I followed up with HR about SA last week (it had been the 3rd week after the interview at which they said they would have a decision). They said they would contact me this week but it is midday Friday and I have heard nothing. Is this some sort of test? Should I follow-up AGAIN??

I am new to the recruiting process and I'm hoping I didn't screw my chances. I have an interivew this coming friday for a SA position in the IBD at a BB in NYC and they are flying me out the night before. I have a few friends in NYC so I figured I'd crash with them for the weekend and fly home Sunday. Does the firm frown upon you staying those extra days as the flight in on their penny? Should I have just flew in on thursday night and gone home friday evening after the interview? I'm just looking at it from an image standpoint and hoping I didn't tarnish anything before I even interview.

Hey WSO, I recently was contacted to schedule interview with Deutsche Bank NY in the upcoming weeks. There is a first interview one day and then a final round the next day, which I am guessing is a super day. Can anyone provide any information or advice on what to expect here? Anyone know the process or give any advice on what to do? Thanks, Michael Scarn, Threat Level Midnight.

Hey guys, I've been lurking around for awhile, and I finally decided to create an account to gather some thoughts on this particular question/issue I'm facing. I interviewed with E&Y FSO for the Tech Advisory Program position at the end of November.. That was my second round interview carried out at the Times Sq office. I completed it and have not heard back since. It's been almost 2 months now, and I've emailed the recruiter twice with no responses.. Any idea what's going on here? And what actions I should take next?

I had a phone interview a couple of weeks ago with a boutique private equity firm and was just told that they wanted me to come into the office for an in person interview. I was told that the meeting will be an hour long. I have never had an interview that was longer than 20-30 minutes so I am just curious what kind of things I should be prepared for. Thanks.

So I got these questions at an interview and I have no idea what the right answers are (I don't know much about commodities). Could anyone help me out? "Usually gold and the stock market have an inverse relationship, why is that?" "Lately gold and the stock market having been moving up in unison, what is causing that to happen?" Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I accepted an offer from a firm a couple weeks back and am set to begin beginning of next week. Firm/experience is decent but not great. However, I just did a phone interview with a BB and they just invited me in for a second round interview with them next week. The meeting is scheduled my second day of the first internship I accepted. I was wondering how I should handle this situation since I'd much rather work at the BB then at the place I'm at now but I don't want to jeopardize my position if I end up not getting the offer from the BB. (btw I know I'll probably burn a few bridges from the first firm but its highly unlikely that I'd want to work there in the future) Thanks.

I have been in the work force for about a year (2015 grad) and am seeking to move laterally into an analyst position within the restructuring group at a well respected boutique. I participated in a phone screen and was asked to complete a take home case study a few weeks later. A few days after submitting, I was notified that my case study passed the review of the team and that I would be coming in for the "next round". Can anybody shed some light (from past experiences of their own or having conducted similar processes themselves) on what I can expect in the process moving forward? Given the

A headhunter approached me and got me an interview with a top-notch MM PE shop. First-round telephone interviews went really well and I got invited for a personal interview at their office. Unfortunately, this interview is on a work day... Options are: calling in sick, excuse for taking day off or telling the truth. Certainly, I dont want to ruin my chances for a FT at the M&A firm. What are your thoughts? How to handle this situation?

So I got a 2nd round interview later today. I was just told I will be meeting with the owner of the company (does not have a backround in the position I applied for). I'm assuming he just wants to meet to see me, see if I'm capable, and just have a conversation. My question to you guys is what questions should I ask him? Day to Day responsibilities and those type of questions just doesn't seem right as he doesn't work with any of the people that would be on my team, so I was thinking along the lines of career path and others along those lines? Any thoughts?

Den of Thieves is required reading from Wall Street Lit 101. Over the years, the term has become synonymous with the greed and villainy Wall Street either inspires in or extracts from people (depending on your perspective). A new den of thieves has emerged on the American landscape, however. It is a den of the vilest scum and purest filth, for it does not acknowledge or recognize its own malice...choosing instead to bleed dry those it purports to protect. America's Sodom, the heart of Pentapolis. Or as we...the financiers of our own suffering call it, Washington D.C.

Hi guys! A while ago I was asked at the interview the following question: "Guide me through 3 financial statement considering that your revenue is 0, and the depreciation is up by 100". My answer was like a combination of usual "change in depreciation" answer and also nol and increase in deffered tax assets. And then I was said that it is not a right one. That's how I failed. Does someone know how to answer this question correctly? Thanks in advance

Hey guys, I just got moved to the second round interview at VC firm for a summer internship. I got an email saying that this won't be a test of my VC knowledge, but skills that will add value to the portfolio companies. I'm a sophomore engineer with no prior finance experience. Can someone please tell me if anything financial is likely to be asked in this interview? If so, what should I review?

So I had no idea about this Wall Street Oasis site until a few days ago. Had I known, I would have done it better. With a humanities degree and hardly any finance background, I somehow managed to get past the resume screening, then the first round interview, then the second round interviews, then the final interview with a top European IB. Call it a miracle, or a fraud, but I think it's the former. The thing is, this is a local office established in Seoul, Korea, and they might be looking for someone who is a real good bilingual, which I am.

Hey Guys, I keep getting the question, "What are the main drivers?" when talking about DCF but I have no idea what this means and can only guess they are referring to inputs? I usually just list all the cash flow lines that go into the DCF and the WACC but is this what they mean? Thanks!

"The interview... frankly I don't care anymore after flunking two first-rounds in 2 weeks. Wonder what happened to the times I could walk blindfolded into a final assessment centre. "Competency" questions have become so ridiculous they ask questions like "Tell me about a time where you had to fight off a feces-flinging 100 stone gorilla with your bare hands". Even bloody indiana jones couldn't answer that truthfully. " LOL http://www.businessbecause.com/mba-job-market/one…

Hey everyone, I had an interview on Wed morning with one of the big 4 and was told I should hear back in about 2 weeks regarding whether or not I will get a second round interview. I thought the interview went really well, and I got an email yesterday saying I was invited for a second round interview day. My only issue is that it is for my second choice of office location. My question is: If I was already invited to a second round for my second office choice does this mean I will not be considered for my first office choice? Will I even know if I am rejected from this location? Also, if anyone

Hey guys and gurus of WSO. I recently interviewed at a REIT for a Summer position and I really really like the firm. First round interview with three analysts and managers went well, I sent my thank you note after my interview and got almost instant replies from all three and very warm responses. I heard back from HR a week later for second round. Second and final round was done with two directors, I did not feel the vibe was as good as first round, not only did the interview end a bit early than expected (ended in 20 mins scheduled to be 30 mins) but I also got no email response after sending

Has anyone heard back for second round interviews yet? I had mine almost two weeks ago and nothing yet so I'm beginning to think I haven't made it to second rounds. I'm Canada based, btw. Hi guys, I'm relatively new to this website. I recently had a phone interview with a sortof econ consulting firm. They are actually a consulting firm directly related to foundations and their effectiveness. I have surprising low qualifications (3.3 gpa from a non-target), however I have a tiny bit of decent work experience and lots of volunteer work (which this place loves). My question is what to expect from a second interview. They said it consists of 3 and a half ours of talks with different people. Should I expect some sort of test? I've been reading and seen a lot of stuff about tests
