I will be as honest as I can and will love hate or advice regardless what it is. I transferred to a target school a year ago as a junior, if you look at my post history it will explain everything. And after being there for a year I've slowly re-evaluated everything. IB was the most promising career that would be lucrative with time whether it be going to PE or whatever else. Although after coming to a point, doing a random accounting internship this summer, just so I can have the opportunity to recruit for next summer, (which if I put the effort in I will land something, and just started the

Hi Chimps, Just wanted to understand the difference in terms of job duties, between an Asset Manager vs Investment Manager? I've been offered an entry level position in an AM department for a large global fund, however my background is in Credit Research, and was hoping to apply some of my skills in this new role, although the JD received is pretty much fund admin & management tasks and relationship management, rather than defining and researching investment strategies to run the fund. Any suggestion? I thought AM= PM... Also would you take it even if it is not much research focused, and more

All: I'm looking for information on Capital Group. It is widely known as a top Long Only shop and seems to hire their investment analysts out of HSW (typically with 2+2 IB/PE backgrounds) and from top hedge funds. Specifically, looking for info on following topics: - org structure (how many analysts, PMs, and how are teams organized)? - investment process - career progression - comp - hours - interview process Less interested in the 2-3 year, pre-MBA associate program. Thanks in advance.

I applied to the Fidelity "Non-Tech Summer 2018 Internship" about a month ago and just got a Hirevue invite today. Is this their main summer analyst position? Does anyone know what the Hirevue is like? Here is part of the job description: The Purpose of Your Role -Participate in challenging work assignments to increase knowledge and gain valuable experience within the financial services industry -Support quality improvement initiatives -Research, organize, analyze and summarize information for a variety of programs and subjects -Collaborate and partner with team members to identify, resolve

I am currently a junior at a semi target school. Basically, summer analyst recruiting has been a shit show for me. So far, I've only gotten two OCIs, two phone interviews, and one superday in a variety of roles such as IB, corp fin, and AM. I've received no offers yet, despite thinking a few of them went very well given they were mostly behavioral. I was just invited to one final superday of the semester, which will be happening in a little over a week. It is for the investment arm of AIG, and I'd be filling a portfolio analyst role. I'm extremely interested in this opportunity. Bottom line is

Hey all, Looking for some advice on best next steps. I am currently in the process of interviewing for an off-cycle internship (during the Spring) that is semi-related to finance (they do modeling, and my role would be as a consultant). I have one concern though. My GPA is currently a 3.63, and by the end of this semester it will hopefully be edging into the 3.65+ range. If I were to take next semester off, I would obviously be stuck with that GPA (slightly below a 3.7) for Junior SA recruiting. So my questions boils down to this: would it be more worthwhile to not take the semester off and

Hey Monkeys, WSO was a huge resource for me navigating through and eventually breaking into the AM industry. Thought I'd throw an Q&A for all the grinders interested at AM who aren't at target schools. Went to a small non-target school in Boston. When I say non-target...think smaller and less known than BC. Scored a 2.5 freshman year, but ended up with a 3.8 major and minor GPA by graduation. Started the internship path with the brutal insurance sales job, after-which I cold called and presented my way into an industry research role at a PE search-fund in the Greater Boston Area, worked 30+

Hello! As with most students right now, I'm trying to lock down an internship for this coming Summer and I am having a hard time. I'm interested in CRE finance, but studying Real Estate isn't an option at my school. I'm majoring in Finance and Economics with an unflattering 3.2 GPA from a non-target, and I am not getting many responses to applications. I graduate in December 2018 after I come back for one quarter in the fall - I'm hoping this isn't a big factor. My current experience revolves around mutual fund analysis that I do for a boutique PWM company. Other somewhat related experience is

I am a senior finance student who was unable to get an Asset Management analyst job. I have received multiple sales offers as internals for top AM firms and want to know if a couple years in AM sales would hurt my chance at a top 25 MBA? My ultimate end goal is Asset Management after school. Plan to get my CFA while in sales. Appreciate any help.

Hi guys, Just wanted to gauge opinions on the forum about junior year SA offers my friend is currently deciding between. One is Wells Fargo IB (either in Charlotte or NYC, location not secured yet) or JPM Asset Management (NYC). He long-term goal is to be an investor, and he's been in love with the public markets for as long as I can remember. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone. I'm 21, following a master degree in finance in a pretty good business school in France. I'm also a CFA level 1 candidate, since my school has a partnership with the CFA institute, I thought it would be good to leave the school with CFA level II(if everything goes well) I'll also have a MsC in Finance. Anyway. I will have 3 internships done when I leave the school. The first one I already did it, I managed to work in front office as an analyst in a very prestigious Swiss bank so it's pretty good. The thing is, the next internship is going to be very important for me. I was

Hello all, First post on WSO here & I just wanted to ask what your initial impulse is when reviewing my qualifications. Before I get into the details of my academics, I just want to say that I come from a lower middle-class family in the suburbs of Chicago and am a first generation college student. During my time at school until early HS, I was put into high-level math and reading courses (2+ grades above), but I made friends with the wrong crowd during HS and ended up finished with a GPA in the low 2s. After taking the ACT (29), I decided to go to UIC since I was unable to afford DePaul or

I've done some research on A&M's restructuring group here and elsewhere, but wanted to get input from other members here. My understanding is that the restructuring business is top notch, and has a reputation for great work. Base pay seems below average, but the bonuses can be significant. As with anything, the hours are long and travel is expected, but the firm seems to be entrepreneurial in that hard work and high performance are well rewarded. As an analyst (looking at the west coast area) it sounds like the majority of the work would be developing an expertise in a business area, 13-week

Hi everyone, I'm a pending sophomore transfer student in BC, Canada. I've been reading WSO since the middle of last year, but recently my aspirations for banking has intensified, so here I am. I have two options to consider for September. Both of them are BA, specializing in some form of economics. I really love economics, hence applying for them over BComm. To cut to the chase, my question is which of the two is more favored in the world of banking? Does a Queen's degree trump over a McGill degree? Does Queen's have better OCR than McGill? Does taking a Joint Honors appeal to IB more than

Hi Guys, I am between two offers. The first is for an internal wholesale gig, working for a highly respected investment management firm; the second is for an analyst position at a newly established RIA (AUM of ~200MM), where my functions would include placing trades, building portfolios, preparing performance reports, etc. Does anyone have experience working with a small RIA? If so, and assuming the RIA does grow to a more significant level, could I expect to learn more from working-and growing with-the RIA? My ultimate goal is to become an FA, but I'd like to accumulate a more diverse

the title is pretty straightforward. I am wondering why such little attention is devoted to the classic "bigger picture", aka macroeconomics on a regional / zone / global scale as opposed to the in depth diligence on all the things relating to the industry (sector demand/supply, competitive dynamics, players, business model, etc). please note that: - I by no means think that the latter is less important, it's a vital component to a make-it-or-break it approach to stock picking - I by no means think that macro is easy (in a 3 months + optics) to understand, predict, gauge in a rsk management

Hi everyone, I am a newbie to this forum. I got my phd (corporate finance) three years ago and currently am working for a big4 advisory service assisting banks on model validation/development based on regulatory requirement (e.g. CCAR, Basel). After three years I already lost interest on my current field and want to move to AM. The risk model I have worked on has nothing to do with market products and therefore cannot add to much to my resume. I will really appreciate if someone could give me advice on how to move from risk to AM! Even some little hint would be highly appreciated! Stay warm. V

I have a superday interview with a BB AM in a few days. They told me they are looking at 10 candidates during the superday and will make 2 offers. The only time slot that was left was the last one of the day (4:30) so I got stuck with that. Will this put me at an advantage or a disadvantage? I have relevant experience (two summers at two different boutique AM funds) and great ECs, but weak grades (3.2). My worry is they'll make up their minds on the 4 candidates before they go through me and I'll be SOL. On the other hand, I guess they could also remember me better than others as well.

I am currently working as an intern for the summer at Morgan Stanley doing equity research. I am interested in IB, however and would prefer receiving a full-time offer in their IB division (still at MS). Hopefully, I can recruit during the summer for IB if the firm provides that opportunity. Would my role at the company doing equity research help for an IB role? How do firms look at transferring between these two types of business? Thank you.

I am Director at a 3bn USD AM boutique shop covering a niche growing sector, located in Europe. I am having a strong quant background (phd). I spent 4 years doing applied research in academia (stochastic modeling with applications to finance) and then joined the shop I am currently working at. We were 6 people in the beginning and there was about 200 m USD AUM. Now. About 40 emploers and USD 3bn. so why the hell did I join this firm whereas I got other quant offers from IB? Because I did not listen to anyone's advises and just followed my intuition. I got a quick promotion after a year and can probably make into a partner in short due course.

first of all sorry if this is the wrong section but it was the least "wrong" in my perspective. basically i'd like to know which are the mostly used platforms in ER (buy and sell side) and AM (which i know are a bit different as for the needs in terms of data). i have read many topics on the argument but the comments were a bit elusive especially because none of them was recent. the summary of my findings so far is at follows: bloomberg 1) for Fixed Income is king 2) is best for market data and news factset 3) jack of all trades as for risk, portfolios, financial data (which sometimes lack precision) 4) somewhat cheaper 5) strong emphasis on automation

Hi, I am currently at a boutique consulting firm (~1 year of experience) and am looking to lateral into IBD in ~2 years. I am considering an offer for an operations analyst role at one of the CRAs (S&P, Fitch, Moody's). Although the role is in ops, I've been told by the interviewer that, with some networking, getting exposure to credit model validation / research is a possibility. Further, they seem to sponsor the CFA. I am wondering if this is a great opportunity to jump on or whether I should wait for other finance related opportunities that I can use as stepping stone for an eventual

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER... A totally different kind of career path from what us WSO monkeys normally dream about... but certainly a VERY attractive job, especially if this is possible when you're only in your early or mid 30's. There are many skillsets an investment banker or a private equity professional can carry into becoming a Chief Financial Offer of a non-financial company. But how about the financial markets professionals like the ones in Asset Management and Hedge Fund businesses? What skillsets can AM and HF professionals carry into becoming CFOs of non-financial companies? Is this even possible? Slim chances? What are your thoughts?

Hey guys -- I'm a current junior at an HBCU (Morehouse-Hampton-Howard) and I took three years off before going to college. At the time, I was a big dummy & didn't know what I wanted to do after high school. Held a bunch of odd jobs until going back at 21 years old. I will graduate in the spring of 2014. I'm 24 years old now. If I get a SA offer next summer, I'll be 25 years old. If I get a FT offer after graduation, I'll be 26 years old. Will IBs hold that against me being 4 years older than most recruits? Or do they not care about age? Or should I just not mention it? I look youthful enough

Might seem lame to most but I'm just an accounting type of guy. Could anyone give their 2 cents on audit opportunities in bb vs big 4? In terms of salary and exit opps mostly. Also how does someone land an internal audit job at an investment bank? Most banks aim their recruiting for those trying to get into IBD or AM, S&T etc. They don't really have internships or programs for auditors. Thanks.

Hey All, I've read a lot of topics here and I know some of you guys are way more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to IBD vs AM and specific firms. I've got a specific question I hope you guys could help me out with. What are your thoughts on compensation/exit opps/the street's view/etc. on these guys? I'm thinking of going HF or PE or maybe going an entrepreneurial route but would prefer taking one of these jobs first. IBD: Jefferies (Seems to get bashed alot...whats the deal w/ these guys?) Nomura (What is Wall St.'s sentiment towards these guys right now? How are they performing, etc.?) AM: T Rowe Price (Prestigious? Kind of in B-more...not the most idealistic place to be)

Hi guys, I'm really starting to get nervous about the level of Maths required in AM. Obviously I'm not looking into getting into the really quantitative funds, but I would like to work in the industry, analysing markets, etc... Those of you with experience, how much math is actually used and would a business major (basic accounting, no Finance or Economics) survive OK?

I have an interview next week with a small local Asset Management firm. I received the interview by basically emailing every firm I could find regarding possible summer internships. Because it's a small firm with no formal internship program I am not sure what to expect for the interview and don't want to screw it up because I don't have many backup options. Any advice/help with the upcoming interview would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'm planning on completing my CFA Level I before graduating undergrad in May of 2013. According to the CFA website, you must: "Have a bachelor's (or equivalent) degree or be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program at the time of registration" Does final year of your bachelors degree program mean the final year level (ie: sophomore, junior, senior) or final caldendar year? I would like to be able to put on my resume that I am a level I candidate when applying for summer internships in 2012, planning to take the exam in June or December of 2012.

So, for all those doubters who said I was moron for doing what I did: I have an interview set up with the Private Bank of a BB for their Analyst Program. This is widely regarded as the best Private Bank on Wall Street. The reason this position opened is because an analyst at this particular bank left and they need to fill it IMMEDIATELY. I sent my resume in yesterday evening, got a call today from a recruiter in NY for a quick 20 min. phone (make sure you know a thing or two) interview in the afternoon, and got a call an hour and a half later by one of the bankers to set up an interview for early next week. They are obviously moving very quickly and I must be on their radar screen. What should I be prepared for???

Most seem to require general AM experience. Do you think they care what type of firm it is, i.e. pension fund, MF, ect. Also would it be better to get an MSF now or an MBA later? What caliber b-school would I need to go to? Is UW or Kelly good enough?
