It's that time of year again, folks. Time to polish those resumes, fire up the LinkedIn and WSO search functions, and bug the hell out of the career advisers at your schools. It's recruiting time! We are all looking for information on timelines and deadlines for every bank possible. If you or your school has information on important upcoming dates, please, please, please share them with us! I'll collect all the information I can here in this first post, and I'll update it from info in the body of the thread. If you have information and you don't want to post for whatever reason, PM me and I'll

Hi everyone! I'm applying to summer internships next year and thought it might be useful for me and others to find out which divisions are the most difficult to get into. What do you think? The divisions (randomised) are... - Risk Management - Asset Management - Compliance - Private Banking/Wealth Management - Equity Research - Corporate Banking - Sales and Trading - Investment Banking Looking forward to your responses!

Hello, I would really like to know your opinion on these two MSc courses, given the recent Post-Brexit scenario. Which one do you think is better for a career in Investment Banking? (M&A). There should be no doubt that Paris offers greater opportunities than Milan not only in terms of Jobs but also in terms of salary. Which school can be considered "target"? Assuming EU citizenship and fluency in both Italian and French which school would you choose and why. Thanks!

I just finished my first year of undergrad and I am sitting a little over 60 credits - 30 that I came in with from AP classes, and 30 from my first two semesters. This pushes my graduation date up one year to June 2020. Over the next few days I will be sending out a bunch of applications for 2019 SA internships. My question is whether I should be applying for junior or sophomore SA programs, or both, depending on the firm (apply for sophomore positions at the most prestigious firms where my chances are slim, and junior at less prestigious firms where I feel I have better odds) The reason I am

Mod Note (Andy) - this was originally posted 8/25/15 but we know @TNA" loves answering these questions so bumping up again to the top With the MSF recruiting cycle quickly approaching, I thought it would be helpful to create an updated MSF thread for everyone applying to the 2016-2017 MSF cycle. Feel free to post questions for this years upcoming applications here. I will answer what I can. Good luck everyone!

Hey everyone, So I'm graduating in December from a semi target school in the Midwest with a degree in Finance. I will be taking the GMAT in February, and finishing applications to schools such as Vanderbilt, Villanova, UT, Michigan State, Texas A&M, and Duke's MMS, all which are March deadlines and the final round for most of them. I still have other schools like Ohio State which I would apply to that have a later deadline, but are still the final round. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts about final round apps are? School: Semi Target school in Midwest Major: Finance Age: 23 when

I did a 2-day programme with a BB earlier this year, which wasn't even a spring week, it was just an introduction to banking day and then a day of charity work with them, but when applying for it I boosted my GPA up significantly to make sure I got on (knew it wasn't serious enough for them to bother checking). It turned out the programme wasn't very competitive to get on at all and we weren't fast-tracked or anything like that to internship interviews - it was more of a marketing thing.

I'd love to hear from some other applicants, former or current, that are straddling both non-quant & quant schools. I've gone from a quant list, to a non-quant list, then back to a quant list, until I finally mix and matched. Despite being warned over and over again that this is a terrible idea, I'm ridiculously interested in both types of programs & job prospects; my background is the only big question mark here. I already have the list of math prerequisites burned to the inside of my eyelids, so I'm more so interested in hearing how other applicants in the same boat are rationalizing their

I'm currently an undergrad entering my final year. I have had some medical problems and therefore deferred my final year (September 2011 - July 2012) and now graduate in July 2013. The medical problems will mostly over by the end of September (2012) but one of them will continue until December 2012 (its not a visible problem so I guess I should be fine). I am also not really sure what division to apply to anymore. I'm still trying to decide between going back to IBD, trying ER or doing something completely different. Because of the time the medical problems have taken up, I am out of touch with the financial news/out of practice for interviews etc.

Do some PE firms take on people for short internships or work experience? I'm in the UK, have an internship at a European BB lined up for the summer but will still have 5 or so weeks at the end before college starts; i was thinking of applying to a load of PE firms such as Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, Providence Equity Partners, Cinven, M Vision, Atlantic-Pacific Capital Inc to see if I could do a month or so with them. I'll also have done an internship at a magic circle law firm by the time i get to summer. Was wondering if anyone had any perspectives; or if such firms would possible take someone on for that time (i'm not looking to get paid) and basically whether I should try it.

Submitted an application this morning for a position at a consulting firm. Used a partner as a reference (after an informational interview earlier where he said I could). I sent him both a follow up from our earlier string of emails as well as when I entered the referral it would have gone to his email to approve it. I didn't get a response. I had the conversation with him about a month ago, do you think he forgot it? Did he just not think it was necessary to confirm that he got it? Should I take any additional steps. When we had the conversation he said to follow up with him if I don't hear anything a week after submitting. Should I just wait for the week to go by and then contact him if I don't hear anything?

Just wondering if anyone has ever gotten an interview, lest a job, from applying to a bank on the brink of the application deadline. For that matter, at what point does it become too late to apply?

Hi, I was planning to apply to all BB's (FT) today, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find applications for the European BB's. Have they not opened yet? Are they closed already? Are they just not posting this year? Am I looking in the wrong place? Please let me know. Apologies if this is an extremely dumb question.

I am applying on Round 2 to HBS, GSB, MIT and Wharton. I'm not going to business school if I don't get into those schools. SHOULD I FOCUS MY ATTENTION ON MY GMAT AT THIS POINT? OR MY APPLICATIONS? Here's my profile: - GPA: 3.65 - Mechanical Engineering (Top 3 engineering school) - 3 years of consulting at big 4 firm - Worked in 7 different countries in Europe, North and South America. I speak 3 languages - Started my own business about 1 year ago. Goldman's Summer Analyst program provides for the possibility to apply to multiple locations. In what way do I put the address on the Cover Letter in that case? I mean I guess I could write down all three addresses of the three different locations, but that seems redundant to me. Further, I have had contact with one recruiter only, and I guess the Cover Letter will be read by different recruiters in each location. So should I address the Cover Letter to that specific recruiter or rather use a boring and generic phrase like "to whom it may concern"? Because I guess its weird if you are

Guys, I am doing a bit of research to find out what college students (regardless of year) or grads struggle with when writing applications. To this end, I have put together a short survey which can be accessed here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FLF7HPB Could you please take some time to answer the questions? It shouldn't take too long at all and the answers would be invaluable to me. Also, if you could pass along the survey link to other you know (FB posts, college email lists etc), that would be awesome as well. Grateful for any assistance and many thanks in advance!

Hey everyone. I know this has been answered somewhat, but I was looking for a direct answer. I'm graduating a semester early in December from undergrad. I was wondering when is the earliest possible time I can start applying. I'm hoping to do S&T or PE but I want to cast a good size net to evaluate my options. I'll be able to do interviews as I'm in NYC anyways. I'm eager to start the job search. Appreciate the help.

I noticed a lot of the banks have deadlines before the MBA first semester is even finished. Do you apply without a GPA? JP Morgan's summer associate deadline is December 12th and I am in the midst of finals at that time. I am trying to figure out if I am better of waiting on applications so that I have my MBA GPA in. I should have a 3.9+ this semester and I think it would take their eyes off my less than stellar undergraduate GPA. For some of the banks, I have no choice, but to send in the application without my first semester in bschool.

So I've attended a few networking events at a particular firm, and on their online app there's a section where you are supposed to list any contacts you have within the firm (name, position, nature of relationship). Can I just add in all the names for people who freely gave me their cards (and I had good rapport with) or should I drop them an email asking for permission first? One of these events was in the last few weeks so they will recognise my name without being prompted. I have read on here before that you should always ask for permission to name drop people on a cover letter, but how

There are quite a few of you guys out there. For those of you who have had personal experience, can you talk about your evaluations of your advisors? Here are a few that I've run across: * Accepted.com (Linda Abraham) * Alchemy Admissions Advisors * Blue Horizon Admissions * Clear Admit * HBSGuru / Cambridge Essay Service (Sandy Kreisberg) * MBA Apply (Alex Chu) * MBAMission * MBAPrepAdvantage * Stacy Blackman Consulting I think the greatest value of these public boards is that people can speak candidly without fear of repercussion, and those who are out of line will simultaneously be put in their place by others who are reputable members / moderators. As a result, let's discuss openly and cut to the chase. Who's good, who's alright, and who's a joke?

I am sure earlier the better right? Just for sheer number purposes, the earlier you start, the more you could fill out. Well right now I am a sophomore SA at a Boutique in manhattan, and I am getting some decent experience for someone my age. I want to start filling out applications, but I cant really fill out the bullet points for my current internship right now because it is so early and I basically just started. I also may be transferring and am unsure about what to do in regards with that, I don't want to fill out apps without my new school on it (got accepted to two semi-targets).

So my resume makes me look like I am dead-set on banking (which I am). Banking SA recruiting doesn't start for a few more months though, so I wanted to drop in the mean time for some other positions and get interview experience in. For those of you with previous banking internships, you do you "adapt" your resume to better fit corporate finance/consulting applications? Do you just take out "investment banking analyst" and write "summer intern" instead? Or do you go so far as to change your bullets. Really interested in your advice, thanks!

Ok, so here is my dilemma. I go to a non target. When I mean non target, I mean its not even on the radar of anyone in the financial community. I could have gone to a top 20 school, but passed up the opportunity to save money. In the past two summers, I have done two internships one being with an actuarial firm. To get the actuarial gig, I passed two actuarial exams which are fairly difficult. I will be graduating in 11 with a double degree in finance & mathematics along with a minor in accounting. Math GPA: 4.0 Fin GPA: 4.0 Cumulative: 3.77. This is despite entering school in 08. I have so far applied to at least 30 places and contacted probably 50. I will probably end up applying to 50 out of the 100 or so firms I have found within the city. These consist of both Asset Management and investment banking firms. I haven't had anyone contact me for any interviews. I have good experience and a strong resume. The only problem is that there is virtually no one in the alumni network and no companies recruiting at my school. Anyone Have any suggestions of how to improve my job search and actually get an interview. I have a good list of about 30+ pe firms that I havn't contacted yet.

I am a rising senior at a semi-target or target uni where all the major banks recruit via our On-Campus Recruiting network. Recruiting for full-time positions has started early this fall and I want to know how to best leverage my contacts to get interviews. I've done two internships (both in PWM) at two major BBs. One was this summer as a summer analyst. I've made a few contacts at both these places as well as at other firms around NYC. Should I be using these contacts to ask for interviews using my school's OCR resources (asking if they know the recruiter at my school)? Or should I be trying to ask them for interviews directly at their firm and bypass my schools OCR session? What is the timeline for making my ask? While OCR interviews are in full swing? Or does it not matter?

Hi, With the holidays coming up and with nothing to do currently, I am considering sending a blanket letter and CV to several hedge funds to see if they need an intern over the holiday period. Unfortunately I don't have any contacts in the HF industry, but have a summer internship at a BB lined up and would like to get some experience. I know it is a really small chance to get some work from this, but is it worth my effort. Anyone had any success through stuff like this? Thanks for any input.

Hey can anyone share any products or apps they have or currently use that can improve productivity? I essentially wanted to know how I can create a virtual office and not be tied down to a desk or server while having a seamless workflow with employees and clients. I am particularly interested in fax to email programs, VOIP phone service, Document Management System (DMS). Scan to file software that has OCR capabilities and extract certain data. Additional topics would be your office network and desk setup. Any good workflow programs that can be flexible and accommodate various workflows.

This relates to both IBD and ER but I've realized that no one looks at the ER forum, so here it is: I'm torn between entering IBD or ER. IB seems more interesting to me, but I'm really not sure I'm cut out for the hours. I ultimately would like to work in a l/s hedge fund. I'm wondering what would be the best way to approach the application process for both SA next summer and then FT afterwards. Since I'm pretty unfamiliar with the process, I would really appreciate some answers to these questions: 1. How do you apply specifically to research positions? (as opposed to IBD) Do the banks that list on school career sites have separate listings for both ER and IBD? 2. Is it a bad idea / is it possible to apply to both ER and IBD at the same bank?

Any word for Round 1 applicants on WSO yet? I've heard that in previous years they have released invites in small batches over the course of a few weeks. Not sure if there is any rhyme or reason to which applicants receive their interview invites first. I have not yet heard back, but fingers are crossed.

Hey all, A lot of the application platforms that banks use to recruit interns ask for some sort of demographic information. As a non-URM, should I even bother giving my demographic information? Is it just assumed that I am not a URM? Thanks.

In other words, what computer/programming/applications skills do you need to apply in the finance world? Because I have seen programmers and computer savvy people succeed in the financial market, and because I'm also studying business technology and finance at school and would like to improve my computer skills, but don't know in which direction to head...

Hello WSO, I'm a second year student from Toronto, Ontario studying at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. I am part of our co-op program, they've already critiqued my resume, but I would love to hear what you guys think here. Tell me what pile you'd put me in (Yes, No, Maybe). If you can, tell me why you'd put me in the one you did. Be harsh, I can take it (I think). Thanks in advance WSO. Regards, -Brendan

Hi, I'm applying to a BB bank in the UK and need to answer the following question as part of the application: Describe a recent development in the Investment Banking industry. What implications might this development have for the division to which you have applied? (IBD) I was think of talking about the increasing important of SWFs as investors in private placements. This coupled with the growth in companies doing equity issuances to pay down debt presents clear investment opportunities for SWFs. Obviously this effects the banks as they now need to build up relationships with SWF - who are important now investors. Comments and any other examples would be greatly appreciated. S

For entry level PE positions is it similar to IB with rounds starting September/October and rounds until December? Or is it more firm specific in PE. Im going for my MS at a target school and have only recently have decided to move into finance so sorry if this has been answered somewhere or is just a stupid question... Any insights would be appreciated, thanks.

Monkeys, I have a few questions regarding SA Applications for next Summer in the U.S. 1) When is a good time to fill these out? Are they even available yet? 2) Lets say my Resume changes after I have filled out my application (due to a Fall semester internship), can you edit an application and change your resume? 3) How many positions should you apply for? I am strictly looking for IBD, but I am open to groups within this such as DCM, ECM or Lev Fin. Do I apply to these as well, or does this fall within Investment Banking and they will just stick you in one of these groups throughout the interview process?
11 Aug 2013
Hi Monkeys, This might sound stupid, but I have been wondering about it for a while: do you think there would be an "optimal" time to send in my applications for BB SA internships? Most of my deadlines are around mid-January For those of you who are on the recruiting side of things, is an application sent before Christmas more likely to be put on the back-burner and somewhat forgotten about? Would an applicant have more chances of getting looked over if he send his materials closer to the due date? Or do you feel like applicants who send their materials early demonstrate organization, readiness, etc?
