Dress-codes for M&A can be pretty stiff - what do people expect from their virtual summer interns wanting to make a good impression? Collared shirts (ties even?) on zoom calls with the team/networking/training or just try not to look like you've just woken up?

It seems ever since 2008, the finance industry has loosened up their dress codes dramatically. No longer are power suits and red ties the norm. Now it seems to be all Midtown Uniforms with gray Patagonia vests. What are your opinions on the loosening of office dress codes?

As some of you may know by now, GS just announced their new "casual" dress code. So i was wondering what would you consider wearing into the office? Also, do you think it is a good idea to change the formal suit attire that's so typical of wall street? Is this a growing trend?

Monkeys, I had some questions about attire recommendations for S&T dress clothing for a summer intern. I was planning on buying 5 brooks brothers shirts (only in plain white and blue) and some navy/gray dress pants. I have seen advice on this forum such as to leave a suit jacket/tie in your office in case of client meetings. In that case is it fine to wear the suit jacket with a different color of pants? Or should you only be buying pants which have a matching jacket? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for buying pants for a guy who is 6'3.

The position is a back office position and I'm not too keen on wearing a suit. Can I get away with a >Dress Shirt > Tie > Slacks > Cashmere Sweater

What would you say is the best look (best i.e., someone who you would say "that person looks awesome") for men and women at major hedge funds on the East Coast? Any specific designers or items that are "must haves"?

I have an orientation meeting for an Accounting Fraternity coming up. The event description says "dress casual," but I dont know what type of casual they mean. For a bunch of college kids, they could take casual as shorts/jeans and a t-shirt. I understand that casual dress should mean a nice button down and slacks, but I dont want to go there and be overdressed if everyone is really taking the "dress casual" to the extreme, and of course I dont want to go in shorts and a t shirt if everyone else is going to be dressed in "real" casual attire. Any ideas as to what to do, maybe something in

Hello I was wondering whether it would be appropriate to wear a skinny suit to an interview and subsequently, everyday to work. I'm not talking Russell Brand skinny or anything, just something like this http://us.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Pr… I am pretty much the same frame as that guy, tall and skinny. So what do you think?
12 Sep 2011
A fellow monkey here is telling me they do not and I'm a bit skeptical. To me, if you don't wear an undershirt to work you're basically dressing like a 7th grade clown. Any decent data points on this? Thanks

I'm a girl in her early 20s starting a London-based BB internship soon. For the most part, I've got the dress code figured out, and as an intern I know I won't meet any clients, so I'm not stressing out too much. However, since I don't live in London and don't want to take more than two suitcases there, I need to know what I'm bringing in advance. While I know that there are much more important things to focus on and that accessories will not make or break my internship, I do have limited luggage space, so it'd be helpful to hear what everyone's take is on accessories for female interns. I

So, an undergrad comes in for an interview for an FT or SA position. I would think that anyone that wants to get into IBD or Finance in general will have done extensive research on how to break in, and will therefore have read WSO threads on the matter, M&I etc. If I saw someone who has obviously not read up on how they should dress, and they're wearing square toe shoes and the works, I would see it as someone who either doesn't care enough to make sure nothing is left to chance, or someone who thinks he's too good to dress the way bankers want him to dress, which would tell me that this person obviously won't be OK taking shit from VPs and doing the "unimportant" grunt work, because he fancies himself better than that.

As the title states, what is your dress code? Also please state if you work at a BB, boutique, and etc. I just wear business casual (slacks/dress pants, dress shirt, and no tie).

I am in college and plan to work as an IB analyst in Houston. What would be the standard dress code in that area for someone of my position? Is a blazer and slacks fine, or should I get a full-on suit? Do I even need a jacket at all?
03 Oct 2015
Ok so my dress code is business casual but with a tie for 4 days of the week. I am not really used to wearing a tie without a suit but I guess I will have to buy ties. Can someone estimate the number of ties and shirts that I should have?

Hi guys..Need some of your input on what your favorite brands of dress shoes and ties are. Looking for nice/smart shoes and ties that aren't ridiculously priced..... Just an intern here! Personally this is what my closet consists of: -All 3 suits: Suit Supply -Dress shirts: Charles Tyrwhitt & Brooks Brothers -Ties: Charles Tyrwhitt & Michael Kors -Shoes: Johnston and Murphy & Cole Haan -Belts: Johnston and Murphy All your comments are greatly appreciated. Specifically looking for shoes and ties!

Hi I have an interview with Bloomberg in NYC next week. I have been reading on the web on what to wear for the interview and there are a whole bunch of (sometimes contradicting) ideas. So I appreciate your help with this. I am thinking of wearing the following: From my black suit , I'll wear the pants (not the jacket though) A bright shirt (white or similar) A tie A sweater vest A formal black winter jacket (longer than suit jacket) My questions: 1- Is sweater vest too casual? 2- I'll be taking off the jacket (it's heavy and uncomfortable to sit with) . Will I be too informal? Should I forget about the winter jacket, wear the suit jacket and have it on during the interview? Thanks.

Interned elsewhere but will be starting full time this July. Never really considered this or had an appropriate time to ask. Didn't pay much attention to nonsenior people when interviewing and was just wondering if anyone knew if it tended to be more business formal or biz casual... thanks

Hey guys, I am an international student studying finance at a target university. I will be applying for SA positions soon and really wished to get some inputs on the dress code. I see a lot of information for what to wear during your SA / Analyst gig, but my concern is more over whats best for your SA interview. I planned on wearing decent looking navy blue / charcoal suits, slacks, white shirt, silk tie and some decent looking black shoes and belt. All these I have bought from my home country and they look good, just that they are not Brooks Brothers / Saks / Bloomingdales (we do not have those stores in my country).

Just curious to know what the different dress codes are for some of the Big4 firms. How different is office attire for some places like NY/Bos/SF/DA etc?

I'm updating my wardrobe for my sophomore internship this summer, mostly in the way of dress slacks. Next summer I will be at an EB for my junior internship, and would like to buy clothes this summer that I can wear next summer. Everyone talks about buying suits for internships, but no bankers I've ever met with for coffee have been in a suit (even without a tie). Mostly dress shirt and vest. What is the dress code for elite boutiques? If nobody wears suits, I will save money and buy slacks without the jacket.

Which suit would be better for finance? http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Penny-Loafers/MH000… (I've a 15% discount so it'd only be #363) or http://www.allenedmonds.com/shoes/mens-shoes/loaf…

I have a 2nd round interview at a prop trading firm coming up. In the first round, the interviewer mentioned that they "had a much more casual culture than investment banks, and I wouldn't have to wear a suit and tie like this (I wore a suit and tie to the first round) to work every day." Does this mean it would be advisable to dress more casually, such as just slacks and a button down, to the second round, or should I just wear a suit again because it's still and interview? Thanks

I'm applying as an intern, and I was wondering if my current wardrobe is appropriate. There are casual Fridays. Shirts: Four white shirts all from Brooks Brothers, with shirt pockets, spread collar, no buttons on collar Blazer: Two navy blazers from J. Press Ties: Four J.Press regimental ties (one for every day of the week) Belt: Two black J.Press leather belts Shoes: Two black Allen Edmonds penny loafers Watch: One Mondaine Pants: Three grey flannels from J.Press Casual Friday wear: Pink and yellow button-down collar shirts, khakis. Hi everyone, Im a new user. And it is my first time to attend WSO meetup in NY on 04/27. Is this event free to attend or I need to register. Do I need to buy a ticket? What are the.dressing codes? Thank you guys very much.

"Khakis? I'm gonna be wearing a suit like ... 90% of the time. I'd rather have 6 suits and 1 pair of khakis. And nice dress shoes. It's impossible to have too many nice black dress shoes. The pointy ones, definitely. Or they'll make fun of me." The phone call I had with my dad in the airport coming home from school last year. We had planned on going clothes shopping before I got shipped off to New York, as I was desperately under-equipped for the job, given my expectations of what I'd need. Looking back, I'm glad he told me I was taking things a little too seriously. By the time I moved out to

In a Big Brother-style, 43 page dress code for its bank employees, UBS has a recommendation for everything from the length of employees' socks (at least knee high, to avoid embarrassing peeks of skin from the trouser leg) to what they eat (no garlic). Here are some taken out: "The nicky [kerchief] should always be folded and tied with a bow oriented, not below, but as far as possible, top left. Style "boy scout" (nicky bellows on the neck) be rejected in all cases" "Never wear shoes that are too small for you: There's nothing worse than a twisted smile." "In interviews with customers or other third parties, it is essential you remove your glasses so that eye contact can established. Sunglasses should not be worn on the head."

Good morning monkeys, Quick question for you. I will be starting at a hedge fund directly after undergrad in about a month. Generally speaking, what is the dress code at a hedge fund? There are about 25 people in the office, and everyone seemed to dress fairly business casual, but I'm not sure if anything's expected differently from someone right out of undergrad.

I am meeting with a CFO in his office this week. I was intending to dress business casual as this is just a networking meeting, but a few people are saying to wear a suit and some are saying to not wear a suit. What does WSO say? I had been told by other people that wearing a suit puts pressure on the person meeting me or that it is seen as a bit presumptuous. What does people think if I wear a dress shirt, dress pants, and a blazer?

Hi monkeys, It may sound like a random topic but I have zero clue on what I will be wearing as an entry-level associate at a Big 4 advisory. I'm curious to know if I will be wearing a suit all the time. How formal is the attire? My office is in NYC. Thanks, and merry christmas to you all!

You've graduated cum laude from an A-school, networked like a rabid-marketing salesman, and eked-out the technical interview and now you're on your way to becoming a FY Analyst at a BB firm! As you joyously pack you belongings together in anticipation of re-locating to NYC, you suddenly stop to realize that a new wardrobe is in need because the Hollister popped-collar shirts and kakis shorts are not going to fly on the street so in preparing for the WS lifestyle here's some practical advice... I'm going to break away this week from my regularly schedule technical articles to share something on

Hey guys, so I have a MS superday for an SA position tomorrow. What does business casual entail in the IB industry? I'm assuming it is just what you normally would wear (suit) to an interview minus the jacket right? (long sleeves, pants, dress shoes and tie) thanks guys

Hello Everyone, I will be working in NYC this summer within FP&A with some risk and forecasting. I recently reached out to my manager about dress code, and he responded - "Business pro is fine. No ties." I'm just confused about exactly what this is , because I've never heard of it. Thank you for your help.
21 May 2015
Hi guys, I'm really confused, and this forum seems like the best place to ask. What should I wear when going to bed? Should I change my attire with regards to the season? Are socks frowned upon? Thanks

Starting an analyst program at BB bank in SF. What is the dress code like? I've heard "casual" and "laid-back" many times, but that sounds open to interpretation. Any thoughts help. Thanks

Anybody know the dress code at BAML? I've heard that BofA was business formal (suits required daily), whereas Merrill was business casual (dress shirts and slacks), but that now it is all business formal. Does this mean analysts wear suits everyday? Assuming not, how often is a suit worn (and how many are generally owned), and what do analysts wear instead? Thanks.

Just wondering what people thought of someone wearing a dress shirt with a pocket on it? I know it isnt necessarily the fashion nowadays, but would you stick out like a sore thumb I guess is what Im tryna ask. Cheers

I'm starting an internship at a FoF in NYC next month, and am curious about the dress code. Initially, I assumed suit and tie, especially since I'll often be in meetings with HF managers, but does anyone know standard office protocol at a FoF? If not, I'm assuming this is an acceptable question to ask them?

I hear Tokyo's notorious for its high temperatures...and nothing sleeveless is allowed according to the dress code policy. How do the rest of you ladies handle the heat? Thanks!
26 Apr 2014
I asked what the dress code was for my internship this summer and was told it is "Business Professional." What does that mean? I figured it is just code for suit and tie every day, but was also told not wearing a suit would be appropriate - so how does that differ from business casual?
20 Apr 2009
Hear me about before you think otherwise. The way you dress affects how you think of yourself. Now that you are all working from home, how do you guys feel about that? Do you wish you up-dressed or do you like casual Fridays? What about not being able to carry that banker bag outdoors now or having that power lunch? I guess what I am leaning towards is, what do you miss now that we are home?

Hello everyone, I am a 23yo girl and I'm right about to enter the business world. I'm starting an internship on Monday at Mars (the Twix Bounty Snickers and pet food multinational) and I need some advice on what to wear. The day of my interview I looked around for clues on the dress code but I was very confused. Men wore colored jackets and pants with light shirts, some even a suite, and I got the code. But women... The ones over 30, I noticed wide blouses and classic style pants in pale colors, no make-up. But maybe they don't see clients often. I am supposed to work in the trade marketing

Is it just me? Or do Bay Streeters tend to dress extremely conservative? Been monitoring what I've seen for awhile and more likely than not have I seen plain navy/grey/black colored, double button, notched lapel suits. It isn't too often but you'll see pinstripes and/or peaked lapels. Is it taboo to wear double-breasted suits? What about double-breasted pinstripe suits? I might have seen this twice and thought it looked awesome - just not comfortable wearing it if I'll stick out like a sore thumb. I'm asking because I'll be seeing my tailor sometime soon to update my wardrobe now that I'm an
