Hi all, I have been interested in energy for a while now but have not been able to dig up a consensus on deal flow and relative strength of the different banks. Took a brief dive into my school Bloomberg and below is what I found. Focused on purely M&A as capital markets are currently in a slump. Feel free to fact check this post as these numbers are public information. All of the rankings I have seen around this forum came across as very subjective so wanted to share a more objective approach in case anyone else was interested as I personally found this very helpful. This is meant to be an

Analyst here in NYC contemplating moving after the analyst years. Been in NYC for the past 3 years and there is a chance I stay. However, I am thinking about shipping out when my lease is up later this year and the options are LA or Dallas/Houston. SF is out of the question, so save your energy and go pick up some human shit or needles while you're at it. Assume pay would be market pay for a first year associate or third year analyst in banking terms. Looking for: night life, diversity (in thought and people), food options, slower pace, solid weather, MINIMAL traffic - I fucking hate driving

Anyone have any insight into their process? I know the applications have been open for months and I've heard they have a week-long "Energy Banking Boot Camp" coming up in August. Have they already filled 2020 SA spots / are they kicking off soon?

I'll be a SA in Houston this summer and I was wondering if I should bring my car? I think I will need it on the weekend and stuff. However, do most people drive their car to their downtown office location? I am terrible at parking. I see the red line is right in front of my bank but how does that work? (Super dumb question I know). Do I take public transportation from my apt straight to the office? I'm worried about safety if that happens on late nights. Or do I drive to a station and then take the train to the office. Or do offices have parking garages?

So recently I have been offered a position at a bank in Houston but, have read that crime is high in the city. My question is for people living in the city how is it? If I still would want to enjoy the night life the city has to offer. Also is Houston a city where you would need a car to get around or is it a city like Manhattan where most of the people either walk or take taxis to get where they want to go.

Mod Note (Andy): Best of Eddie, this was originally was posted on 12/15/10. Monty09 may have gotten the best plug yet for his Energy Rodeo in Houston next month, and it came from none other than the New York Daily News. The Daily News piece on the ridiculous cost of living in New York pointed out that it takes six figures just to make it into the middle class in the city, and a New Yorker has to earn $123,322 a year just to match the lifestyle $50,000 a year buys in you Houston. On top of that, $60,000 a year in Manhattan is the equivalent of just $26,000 a year in Atlanta - just over the

Have begun the search for internship housing in Houston for this upcoming summer and not sure where to start. Doing consulting so will be traveling, but would like to stay in/around the downtown area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is IB comp in Houston significantly lower than NY due to the drastic difference in COL? Any figures? I'm at the associate level and am considering making the move for family health reasons and am curious, even as to the comp dif at Analyst, VP, MD etc levels as well as Associate. Any difference in career progression? If anyone has any experience it'd be of help

Here's the situation - I've been fortunate enough to receive offers for Summer Associate positions at Evercore, TPH, and Simmons & Co. Will have discussions with employees at each over the next few days, but looking for any industry input / information I might not feel comfortable asking them for that you monkeys can provide. In particular, I am looking for compensation numbers and work / life insight (both as specific as possible). My general thought is that Evercore will work the most, then TPH, then Simmons and that compensation will fall in that order as well, but I don't know the range at

Ok ladies and gents, the Energy Rodeo is fast coming up and, if the motivation to learn from industry professionals and insiders isn't enough to make you want to come down to Houston, maybe this will be. In addition to all the great things the Rodeo provides, some of your favorite WSO posters and contributors will be there as well. Big names like: Gekko20 Monty09 Anthony Shorttheworld CaptK and Happypantsmcgee Come on down to Houston January 29th and get the chance to learn, network, and have a good time as well as meet some of your fellow WSO regulars. www.energyrodeo.com

This past weekend about 120 WSO monkeys descended upon Houston, Texas for the 2012 Energy Rodeo, an event characterized by much fun had, knowledge gained, and contacts made by all. The monkeys came by car, by plane, and by bus, but no private choppers (at least not yet…maybe by Energy Rodeo 2025?).

As the title says, I have landed a trading internship in Houston for this summer (2015). I am not from the area, and I am wondering if any users here have experience finding temporary summer housing in the city? I will be living with a roommate who is working downtown and my employer is near the Galleria area, so somewhere easily commutable to these areas is preferred. I am fairly new here, so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this topic.

Can anyone in Houston provide some insight into what is happening over there right now with the oil prices and volatility? Are any layoffs happening at any level? Much thanks.

I know there have been threads on this already, but most have been discussing the boutiques or are a few years old. I was wondering what general rankings are for BBs specifically JPM, Barcap, CS, Jeffries, BAML, MS, GS, UBS in Houston. Looking at exit ops, deal flow, prestige, and comments on culture if anyone works at these places.

Need a place to live soon. Looking for somewhere in midtown/memorial heights/washington/downtown Budget is ~$1500/room max for 2 bedroom. Anyone know of nice complexes?

I'm currently entering my senior year of high school and preparing to start filling out some college applications. I have my eyes on a career in investment banking - either Houston (because I'm in Texas) or Wall Street. I've used a financial aid calculator for all the above schools, and they all come out to around $20,000 per year, so there is no actual difference in cost between the schools. I might apply ED (for those who don't know, Early Decision is a program through which if you are accepted, you are forced to attend that school. It boosts your chance of acceptance because schools know you will attend and they can build a solid class in advance) to Wharton. If I was accepted Wharton it would obviously be a dream come true. Some questions about Wharton:

I am currently a sophomore attending a lower ivy looking to go into IB. I am from Houston and would much rather prefer to work there as opposed to NYC. Do any of you guys know how difficult it is to break into Houston IB from a school outside of Texas? Any tips on how to approach the Houston recruiting process from a school that is not a regional target there?

I'm trying to find some more current information on the firm. I know they focus primarily on A&D in upstream but what is the culture like? Prestige in Houston? Exit Ops? Salary?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I was accepted to Booth (no $), Tuck ($) and McCombs ($$$) and I am still trying to make a decision on the school I should attend next year. My post-MBA goal is to work in Houston, either in O&G IB (indifferent between BB and boutiques) or in management consulting (MBB, Booz, Deloitte). I am currently working in HY DCM for a 2nd tier bank in terms of reputation but 1st tier bank in terms of DCM league table (large European bank doing relatively well compared to peers).

Anyone who's done a summer in Houston have any suggestions for apartment buildings that would provide furnished summer housing? Or other options? Thanks.

New York City 2.907%-3.648% New York 4%-8.82% (more tax rates at the bottom of the post) Do you all consider income taxes of different cities when considering living there? I've read before that when city, state, and federal taxes are calculated for a wealthy New Yorker, their tax burden is about on par with London. Another thing that's important are the taxes that the above list doesn't consider: sales tax, property tax, etc. For example, Texas is known for its considerable property taxes. However, I doubt many people on here (I could be wrong) would want to BUY a house/apartment before 30

Hi everyone! I'm a summer associate at a competitor firm (Bain/BCG), and am thinking about switching to McKinsey once full-time begins. I'm just trying to get a little bit more information to use as I prioritize my location preferences in the application. Any help would be appreciated -- feel free to PM me as well!

I have 3 years of work experience developing real-time risk systems for commodities trading in Houston at a BB. BS in Computer Science and BA in Economics from UT Austin. Want to eventually become an energy trader in Houston. 3.95 GPA, 750 GMAT. I think an MSF program would give me time to do some independent study and network network network. Which program do you think would place the best in Houston for most likely a role as an energy trading analyst: UT Austin MSF, Tulane Master of Management in Energy, MIT MSF, or other (MBA or different school)? All these programs are relatively new, and UT's program is brand new. Top choices for employment after graduation would include Shell, BP, Vitol, Koch S&T, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, before BB.

I've been reading on cities in the south and it seems like these would be my top 3. I've not read as good things about Houston/Dallas as I have about Austin. This is lifestyle wise also, not just opportunities. I'm under the impression Charlotte is a bit more family friendly, Atlanta's almost the opposite, and Austin is just its own weird (but cool) creature. Cost of living is huge for me and I'm pretty sure (?) they're all about the same? Seeing the apartments I could afford compared to other large cities (NYC, LA, SF, DC) is crazy, plus I'd actually be able to afford a nice ride (3 series or

Alright for those of us that are about to begin our final year (next week...gasp) in college and are working on recruitment for IB, I figured I'd make a thread so we can keep each other in the "know" as to who's recruiting when and what positions. This is for USA positions as well as UK. Also, for anyone that's already in IB that works at some of these firms that are recruiting and knows the schedules, feel free to post. I know DB and CS in London are recruiting. Wells Fargo Investment Banking applications go from September 20th-September 25th. JPM Chase applications are also start in September. Not sure as exact dates but a recruiter told me "beginning of September". This is for FT recruiting, not SA. Also, please don't post your resume for people to check.

If a bank asks you to make a preference for different regions like LA, SF, Chicago, Houston, etc What are the pros and cons of each? e.g., is SF better for people interested in healthcare and technology industries, etc? Just wanted to learn about the different regional characteristics (hard to grasp from their websites). Thanks.

Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster. I'm interning in Houston this summer in energy IBD, and I'm not originally from the Texas area so I don't know much about the exit ops. I know some of the banks place really well in PE, but I was wondering if this is only specific to energy PE? Or is it possible to place at a megafund in NY? If so, which banks in Houston would allow for best placement?

What are the recommendations for getting into Power trading companies? Is it best to become a scheduler or something else like a Real Time Trader? What's the general career path at these firms? Is it better to get into a boutique firm in hopes of gaining more exposure or do i need to start at a bigger firm before going boutique? Does anyone have any recommendations for firms to look at in Houston?

[quote]Moelis & Company, the New York-based investment bank, will establish a new office in Houston focusing on clients in the oil and gas industry, the company announced today in an e-mailed statement. The firm is hiring for the effort and expects staff in Houston to grow to between five and 10 bankers in the near term, a spokesperson said. Over time, the office will add headcount as it expands coverage of the energy sector. The firm will hire a mix of senior and junior bankers.

I am in college and plan to work as an IB analyst in Houston. What would be the standard dress code in that area for someone of my position? Is a blazer and slacks fine, or should I get a full-on suit? Do I even need a jacket at all?

Does anyone have info on PJT's arrival on the Houston scene? Have heard they are making a push to build a strong office there. Are they hiring senior bankers from other Houston shops? Moving people from NY?

Hello all, I currently work for one of the major oil companies. I've been working in a credit analyst role for a year now straight out of undergrad. I've been networking and I've managed to network well with a senior managing director at a Valuation firm that happens to do IB deals as well. The guy is an alum and I've been communicating with him via email for the past 6 months. I finally met him last week and we had lunch, he hinted that they may need an analyst after February or March and he said he would recommend that I get some consideration. I know this guy holds weight at his firm since he's a one of the five stakeholders of the company and he's relatively young (35ish).

Just wondering what you guys all pay total in taxes as a percentage of your income, and what your all in income is as well (IB analysts). Especially interested in Houston and Chicago, as I have offers (or am anticipating offers) in those cities as well as NYC. Money isn't a deciding factor but it would be nice to have some cash in the bank after a couple years. No state income tax in TX would be nice...

With recruiting kicking off soon, I was looking for any up-to-date / anectodal insights into US-based energy (particularly oil & gas) focused private equity firms. I've done my research based on older topics on this board but wanted to see if anyone had more recent information given the downturn, and subsequent recovery, in the sector. Less focused on the credit side here. Really taking a hard look at the out and out "pure" equity energy shops (both large-cap and MM, primarily located in TX or NYC such as Tailwater, Yorktown, Encap, Quantum) or megafund arms that are focused on energy (such as

Hi, Has anyone been to the Energy Rodeo held in Houston? I am thinking of dishing out $800 and go down there from Canada, would it be worth it? Has anyone really been able to secure good job leads from that event and how receptive is visiting companies on considering candidates from Canada?

Has anyone heard about the Houston Energy Panel hosted by Wharton? I posted this in the Business School Forum but thought the energy guys out there might be interestred. Although I am not in the energy industry I am interested in that sector post MBA and am a Houston resident so going it's a no brainer. http://upenngsb.askadmissions.net/Portal/EI/ViewD…

Hey guys, Now that I have my summer worked out I'm starting to explore what I want to pursue for FT in the fall. I'm definitely pretty firm on staying in the energy/infrastructure space but I've recently been looking into Project Finance groups. I'm not concerned with exit ops just something that really interests me. What are some of the best firms/groups for project finance (in terms of deal flow/prestige/size)? Thanks alot in advance,

So I can pretty much get a garaunteed acceptance to Tulane and it may be the best I can hope for at the moment. I might be able to get into SMU but it's a bit of a gamble. Could I get a job in energy banking in Houston from Tulane if I work hard? Or would it be better if I went to Tulane for a year and then transferred into SMU. Transferring or getting into UT-Austin is unlikely to impossible.

I'll be rolling out to Houston in a couple hours, and I'll finally get to meet the infamous Monty09 in person. It should be a good event, and I'll give a full report on Sunday on how it went.
