Over the past two weeks, I have sent out around 30 emails and only got one response. This could just be bad luck, but I want to see if perhaps my emails are the problem. Background: I am a rising senior at a semi-target interning in a big 4 valuation group. Since full time IB recruiting will likely be nonexistent, I will likely have to lateral from big 4. I will try to break in through FT recruiting if it exist. I have been contacting analyst/associates who broke into IB without a summer internship and analyst/associates who broke into IB from valuation (big 4 and independent shops like Duff)

Networking is stressed to get your resume pushed, and it is clear that it has an impact but is there anyone on the inside that can provide insight into the mechanics of it. Does HR wait for a quantity of referrals? If you have the worse experience, does HR look for more networking? Can one analyst pull someone through? I'm sure its different across all banks, but I have always disliked how much of a black box this process has been and think it could have been a lot easier if I was able to cater my networking to what banks look for.

How many actual calls/coffee chats with bankers did you sit down for before you received your SA offer. Just curious to know because I am currently recruiting for 2021 SA but didn't realize I wanted to do IB until very recently. I've talked to around 25 different people (at various firms) so far, so wanted to know what that looked like for you?

I'm a rising sophomore at a semi-target, so there are alumni I can reach out to but not a lot. After I finish reaching out to alumni, should I also start networking with non-alums or is there really no point in that. Do non-alums even pull for you or only for people from their own school? Would it be worth the time?

Had first calls with analysts/associates at banks a few months ago. How do I continue the networking and establish a more solid connection? Do I send congrats on deals/updates on my life? Ask to get on a second call? If I got on a second call what do I even ask? I would ask for coffee chats but can't now for COVID obvious reasons. I would really appreciate your advice WSO, thanks.

Is it too early for me (a rising sophomore) to start reaching out to investment bankers for networking. I was told by my career counselor that right now isn't a good time as they are still recruiting summer analysts who are rising juniors and I would not be a priority for them. Is this true? If so, what would be a good time to start networking?

I cold emailed an MD at a BB recently, in a networking attempt. I was able to tell that she opened my email 13+ times between 10 AM and 1 PM. I was kind of confused because I hadn't received a response. Then at 1 PM, I received an email from an HR representative saying that the BB MD forwarded my interest and that I should monitor the Career Portal and update the HR contact on any progress. For reference, I have experience in the coverage group industry (PE and Investment Fund at School) that this MD works in and said as much in the email. Also, probably the most genuine cold email I've

Guys I am new to this shit, so give me a break please. I am beyond desperate for a lateral to a front end role. So recently I went on a 'networking spree' (or desperately tried to) and sent a bunch of LinkedIn invites left, right, and centre. Now an MD level guy at a boutique who is also CEO-India has accepted my request. Only thing I can find is that we have the same hometown (I know it sounds stupid, but THIS IS a major starter especially when you are from a small town in India). How do I talk to this guy? Asking general tips on IB career? Is it too much to bother an MD level guy for

For reference I am a high-school senior. I somehow managed to get in contact with the former CEO of a large investment firm (at least it looked big to me), who currently works in asset management. I don't know why or how linkedin blessed me with this opportunity. Regardless I have a meeting with him in a couple of days to ask him about his work/career. How does one even approach this type of meeting? Should I be trying to get him to tell me about himself, or should I be illustrating why I am interested in him? I was considering the idea of mentioning my desire for an internship, but I don't

When someone sends you a cold email and you take them up on a coffee chat, what makes you want to connect them to another banker in your group? Roughly what percent of candidates do you introduce to your coworkers after the first call? Would an engaging conversation on deals make you more likely to refer them? Or would just talking about a common interest work better (the general goal of coffee chats)? Would just talking about your background and asking for advice be enough to get you to refer them to your coworker after one call? Why would you not put someone in touch?

Hello Everyone, through some networking and sheer luck, I have been given the possibility to talk to an ED at a BB Investment Bank. He already said he would "refer" me, yet I wanted a talk for us to get to know each other so that his referral, in the end, might carry more weight/passion. Having looked up the ED I am certain that I can connect to him regarding some hobbies and interests. Additionally, he is in my "favorite" industry group, which will certainly help. I will mainly focus on learning more about his journey from SA to ED and what his recommendations are. Asking about whom else to

I wonder if you know an associate of GS could help you to secure a summer internship? I had a zoom call but found a common interest and he said that he could send my cv to HR GS. Is it too early to say yes, please? I am an incoming student of Mif at one of the Top schools in the EU and did not have a summer internship before in any IB.

When I send the initial networking email, should I include a list of available times, or should I ask if they are free to chat in general without specific times? If you're working in IB, which type of email do you prefer to see? If you're a student/prospective analyst, which type of email gets a better response rate?

I'm a Canadian looking to move to NYC, unrelated to being in investment banking, but nice that it works out that way. Currently at a regional boutique in Canada as a first year analyst, I presume my school doesn't matter anymore (just a decent Canadian university, not a target school or anything like that). I'm fine starting off somewhere small in NYC, doesn't have to even be a BB/elite boutique, I just want to move when I can (obviously I'm still realistic). 1. Any ideas to which banks/boutiques would be the most receptive/what options outside of IB would consider me? 2. Are my odds of moving

Hi guys. Just reaching out to gage your opinion on a situation. I applied to an IB Analyst position just over two weeks ago, and every time I check the company's website I get an In Progress status. During this time I have reached out on LinkedIn to a few analysts who currently or who have worked for the company(including the one who held the position I applied for) to go over the job and best ways of setting myself apart should I be contacted. But of course, the long wait instills a sense of panic that I may have already not been considered. Given the COVID situation, I also understand the

Hello all, I have reached out and completed a few dozen networking calls. I wouldn't consider many of them complete successes, as I don't think they will remember me if I follow up now (6 months later). I want to keep the conversation going, and everyone I speak with recommends that I follow up with updates. But what exactly does this look like? I've begun some modeling courses and am starting an internship soon - are these worthy of an email? Do I ask to speak again on the phone? (I am a freshman/rising sophomore at a somewhat recognizable non-target). Thanks

Hi guys. Just reaching out to ask if anyone has had experience being recruited by and interviewing with Stifel? They have an opening in my city for an Analyst in their Public Finance department, and my heart is so set on making a career leap from mutual fund call rep to IB. I have 5 securities licenses and 5+ years experience working with various investments(although the shop I work for is predominantly proprietary mutual funds and some RIA). I know many of you have worked in IB or are highly qualified folks going through the rounds of IB recruitment, so I just wanted to ask your experience
