Do startups do background checks?
I'm attempting to jump on the tech startup bandwagon. how rigorous are the background checks for these startups? I can't imagine it to be that rigorous, but it's hard to believe a sector that is so hot right now would just hire anyone who lies and writes they have a 4.0 GPA and worked at McKinsey .
Hate Clothes Shopping? Check This Out.
You guys know I keep pretty close tabs on the start-up scene around the US. What you might not know is how much I hate shopping in general, but shopping for clothes in particular. So when I first read about Bombfell I thought it was a cool idea, but they were just in the accelerator phase with 500...
Thoughts on Ditto Trade?
Hi Monkeys, Have you guys ever heard of Ditto Trade ? It's a platform that lets people participate in the trades of 'lead traders', almost like syndication. I bumped into it through one of the blogs I follow, but I am curious about perspectives from those of you who trade actively, either...
Silicon Alley > Silicon Valley?
The prevailing wisdom over the past decade was that if you wanted to throw your hat into the tech startup ring there was only one place to do it - Silicon Valley. By and large this was true. Over the years however, a number of other cities have taken aim at the tech crown, and now people are...
Got an Idea? Get Funded THIS WEEK
There was other stuff I was going to write about today, but I felt like I had to clue you guys into this story first. Why? Maybe it's just the natural skeptic in me, but I can't see a gravy train like this lasting indefinitely. Many of us have ideas for a side hustle that has the potential to bring...
Foursquare - Twelve Months to Live?
Business Insider is out with an interesting story on geo-location startup Foursquare. Apparently, an Analyst from PrivCo, a research firm that covers private companies, believes that Foursquare will fail in 2013. Wow. Frankly, I've always found Foursquare to be sort of silly. Perfect for the "look...
The New Trend With Startups: Actually Making Money
I happened upon a recent Bloomberg.com article that really warmed my heart. As many of you have probably gathered, I'm a pretty avid follower of tech companies and find myself interested in tracking startups and new businesses in a variety of industries. As you've also likely gathered, I have a beef...
Square Seems Obtuse?
*Movie Preview Voice* In a world where technology companies consistently receive absurd valuations and let everyone on earth down after their disgraceful IPOs, Square stands to either break the mold or continue the trend of disappointment after disappointment. Will it join the ranks of Facebook,...
How to Find Corporate Finance Jobs at Startups?
Hi, I'm a recent college grad looking to work in corporate finance or VC and was wondering how I can find corporate finance jobs at startups or what the best way to going about this process is? Since I graduated from a non-target, I've not really been searching for VC stuff as I know it is very...
Lean Launchpad Enrollment Open
This is for the entrepreneurs among us. It was announced almost a year ago that Steve Blank would be teaching his famous Stanford Lean Launchpad course online for free , but then the whole thing went radio silent. I just got an email this morning from Udacity that the course is starting on September...
"____" Of The Month Clubs - A New Trend in Startups
When a great idea and a disruptive business model comes along, copycats are sure to follow. Such is the case for one of the better startups to come along this year: Dollar Shave Club For those that don't recall, Dollar Shave Club is a new company that offers to send a monthly supply of razors to...
Product Management - The New Exit Op?
Product Management intrigues me. I had always understood it to be a highly interdisciplinary role drawing on elements of engineering, finance, marketing, and (obviously) management, but I hadn’t done any in-depth analysis. I’ve recently given the field a closer look, however, as the trend out...
Facebook’s IPO Flop Sends Reverberations throughout Silicon Valley
It looks like Facebook’s post-IPO share price tumble might end up affecting valuations throughout Silicon Valley. Paul Graham, the influential founder of the Y-Combinator startup incubator, sent a rather ominous email to his stable of portfolio companies warning them that “bad times” might be...
Startup questions
Two of my friends and I are currently working on a startup. We are still going through the details, but the basic concepts have been laid down. We are trying to present an alternative to sites like linkedin, that will make it easier and more efficient for finance professionals to network with each...
9/10 Startups Fail?
I just got done watching Start-Up Junkies on HULU. Pretty cool documentary and does a great job of showing how the start-up process works. At the beginning of the show they reiterate the old stat that 9/10 start-ups fail. I call BS . http://smallbusinessplanned.com/information/small… So my...
Where to find Legal and Tax advice for startups
I just started my own quant finance consulting shop. My background: heavy STEM training, spent some years building quant models for a major consulting firm, and now have found my own contracts/clients. So far it's a one man shop, so the LLC is essentially a pass-through with which to pay me....

New blog
Hey guys, I've been a longtime lurker on this site and have recently been inspired (with a lot of the thanks going to Patrick's own actions as well as Eddie and Midas' inspirational messages) to start my own blog. As a quick background, I am a senior graduating in May and working at MBB next year ....
where to find good computer programmers in NYC
Not a joke--am looking to meet talented programmers in NYC to get a better understanding of the startup scene. Anyone have advice as to how this is done besides hanging out at Columbia/NYU graduate programs?
Monetizing Oneself
So lately I have been sitting on what I see as a potential big d!ck swinging deal and idea. The only problem being lack of capital and paranoia in pitching my idea to strangers(vc). How should one go about monetizing himself and pitching his idea via email to certain tech VC´s in Silicon Valley...
Which startup (hf vs pe vs boutique)?
This is just out of curiousity. What are the outlooks and usual way of going about startups of each PE , HF , or a boutique bank. I know that HF probably has the most risk. PE needs tons $$$$$ from others to start. Both seem very risky/expensive. But how possible is it to do either if someone has...
Ideas For Clubs/Interesting ECs I could do?
So basically, since I go to a non-target, I need to try and join or even come up with interesting ECs to put myself in a position of maybe getting a job in banking. To do so, I was thinking about creating a couple of clubs, joining a couple of clubs, and maybe doing a startup and or not-for-profit...
