Hey Everyone! I wanted to post a Q&A to share my background, experiences, and answer any questions you may have regarding a career as a Strategic Planner. In short, I graduated from a non-Target with a degree in Finance and Operations and spent a few years at an OFS company in a Rotational Leadership Development Program and subsequent roles before joining another F500 industrial company as a Strategic Planner. For those that may not be familiar with Strategic Planning, my role is to support the President & GM of our region by helping to lay the foundation for our strategy to grow market share

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how possible it is to move from audit at Big 4 in a major city to an FP&A or "strategic finance" type of job within a company after working 4-5 years and getting a manager's designation. When I say strategic finance, I'm not just talking about corporate development, but anything that deals with doing NPV analysis, understanding what products or markets a company should pursue, capital budgeting decisions, strategic planning, real options valuation, etc. type of work.

What exactly is Strategic Planning? I always thought it was the Corporate Strategy group within a company, but I've heard of instances where the Corporate Development team is part of Strategic Planning as well. Also, what does compensation look like for Analysts/Associates within Strategic Planning at large financial institutions? Also, what about exit opps and MBA admissions chances? Thanks in advance.

Every organization has a business model, mission and vision set forth during its establishment. At a later time, because of the favorable business environment, does it make sense to diversify into new businesses (with new culture, new product lines, new resources)? As a 12 year "Private Limited" product centric organization with over 600 million in total revenues from 2 countries, their organizational goal is to maximize shareholder value. So, if they do diversify, what are the steps should we keep in mind? Do you suggest to invest more in the expansion of the profitable core business? I'm talking about diversifying towards non-related businesses [like, for example, an automotive (manufacturing) company diversifying towards retail!]
