I've been sitting on this post for a while. I was waiting for it to turn into a success story; started-from-the-bottom-now-we're-here kind of story. But it's been so long I'm going to post it anyway. ###My Background: Finance degree from non-target, super involved on campus, extracurriculars, case comps etc. Worked my ass off to somehow maintain a 3.9 GPA. Managed to land a couple solid internships. I'm also well on my way through the CFA program. ###My Story: I've been on the job hunt for quite a while now. My school has no alumni in finance. My approach has been to apply to jobs

NYC and SF look to be the top placement cities for almost all the MBA programs. What other cities fall into the top tier of business opportunities for MBAs? DC? Chicago? Toronto? Boston? Dallas/Houston? Atlanta? LA? I am considering a relocation from western Canada and wondering if there is anywhere worth going with a lot of action and no ridiculous cost of living like SF/NYC. Chicago has always attracted me and I've recently been blown away by how much Toronto has developed. Also it sort of appears as though LA, although a global iconic city, has fewer typical corporate opportunities and is

Hi All, I'm a first year student at one of the Canadian business schools and curious to know about the investment banking scene in Toronto. Can anyone offer their knowledge on the best groups at the banks in Toronto? For example RBC M&A, BMO Metals and Mining... are they still on top? What bout the american bank offices? Also, how hard is it to land IB in Toronto vs. the US? Is IB still prestigious in Canada? Thank you all in advance!

It's been a while since the latest blog posts on Bay Street VS Wall Street have been up to date, so I decided to refresh the trend to get better information reflecting the current market condition. I know Wall Street bankers will undoubtedly close more big deals, have better exit ops, and be in the second largest global financial hub, but I'm mostly interested in the salary and life quality aspects of both cities. Say that we leave aside small firms, and we do not count in boutiques (because TO boutiques would distort our numbers); let's focus on bulge bracket firms. I'm talking Goldman Sachs

Wanted to know if anyone had any insight into their reputation on Bay St. I've heard their M&A, Real Estate and Credit Capital Markets (not sure if LevFin or vanilla corp banking) are solid groups. Any info on comp and FT rotational program would also be greatly appreciated.

Hey, Interested in mgmt. consulting/tech consulting but also would not be against going into my major (MechEng, ideally FAANG-type stuff). I would like to experience both to get a feel for what I would like to go into as a career. Unsure how recruiting works, I've talked to some current students and I'll put what I've learned below but am interested in what people in the industry have to say. Top choices right now are Waterloo/Queen's, maybe Toronto too but no decision yet. On the American side, I have a few state flagships (nothing like UMich or Berk) and some privates (NEU, CWRU, etc) - not

Hey guys, I'm pretty down right now. Yesterday I received an email that I was not being presented an offer for my dream job as a buy-side equity analyst at a value investing shop. I'm not really sure what I'm hoping to get out this thread other than a place to vent, and maybe some advice on what to do going forward. This rejection comes after 5 initial interviews, a 12 page stock report and Skype presentation and then 3 more interviews in person. I live on the west coast and was flown out to Toronto all expenses paid. I felt all 3 meetings were excellent, and was then notified a few days later

Most of the info I can find on these schools is about the undergrad programs. How about the MBA programs? Which ones are the targets? I've checked out the stats from the schools, but I would prefer hearing from people in the industry.

Hi all, I'm a Canadian in IB and I was wondering who else had used BreakingBayStreet for interview prep? For those who don't know, BreakingBayStreet is a Canadian version of Breaking Into Wall Street. I tried it and had a terrible experience and I'd like to hear more stories. For those of you considering using their services, I would highly recommend against it.

Hey, Monkeys!! In as much as I enjoy reading posts about S&T in other countries, I'm very interested in hearing from my fellow Canada bros. 1. Tell me about your recruiting experiences, Summer experiences, Rotational programs and even shed some light on the compensation structure in Canada. 2. Industry trends and any changes within the Canadian S&T 3. Which trading desks are most the prestigious, hard to disrupt (automate) and provide the highest learning opportunities. Lets go!

As an intern for summer 2018 at a big 5, I'd greatly appreciate advice on where to live downtown TO. Where did you live and how much rent did you pay? Any advice? My friend would like to share a studio in Yorkdale, but I'm thinking closer to work. Thank you!

I got these two offers and I'm trying to figure out which one is best for my goals: Big 5 Capital Markets - Governance and Reporting (co-op) Mostly analytics, reporting, analysis of KRI's, and assisting on new projects that relate to operational risk. Will be working on the Operational Risk, Controls & Governance team. Made future manager aware that I would like to explore other opportunities in capital markets in the future ie. something front office. They said this is possible and the experience ill gain

Hey, I am looking to find a place in Toronto for September - December 2021 as I will be doing an internship. Does anyone know what the best places to look will be? Also, how much should I plan on spending? If anyone else will be working in Toronto during this time, I would be down to room with them. Thank you!

Inspired by the Vancouver thread, wondering if anyone can shed some insight on what investment banking is like in Toronto in terms of pay, culture, deal flow etc.

Anyone knows if Canadian pension funds recruit FT analysts straight out of undergrad? How hard is it and would you consider it to be better than starting in IB first?

It was only in my fourth year of university that I decided to pursue investment banking. Luckily, I was able to land a position at a large Canadian bank in Toronto and will be starting there in a few months. I was and am ecstatic about securing the job, but I very much want to be in New York (for professional and personal reasons). I've browsed through the forums over the last few days and understand the importance of networking, especially for Canadian students trying to get into New York. Had I known that I wanted to do banking junior year, with a bit of luck and some hard work I think I could have landed a job there. However, as I am starting as a first year analyst soon, I don't exactly know how to go about trying to transition. This is where I was hoping to get some advice... 1. How should I go about approaching the networking? What kind of initial questions would I be asking? When should I start? 2. When do analysts usually lateral over? 6 months? 1 year? Should I wait until I have deal experience to apply?

It had been a hell of a day to travel anywhere in the Northeast. Winter storm Nemo had just dumped 2 and a half feet of snow in the greater Boston area, and only a little less in New York. I had been planning to visit Toronto for a while to attend a WSO Happy Hour and see the sights, and the weekend of Feburary 9th also happened to be Chinese New Year. Two things to celebrate in one weekend. It almost didn't happen. Although my connecting flight from Montreal to Toronto went ahead, I ended up sitting on the tarmac for almost 3 hours while the airport people flailed around helplessly trying to figure out what to do about the blizzard…in Toronto, Canada, of all places. I spent more time on the ground than in the air!

So back in February, I got snubbed by a BB ibank for a SA position in Toronto. I ended up cold-emailing boutique firms in Toronto and joined one here. When I met the guy, he told me the summer post would be unpaid with a bonus and that I would "make more money here than I would in any other internship." Now a month in, I have yet to be paid, even though I have added value (finding (correcting rather) trading multiples for an acquistion, setting up a meeting with a potential client looking to sell etc.) I find it awkward asking about my bonus but frankly, this is starting to piss me off, especially because we just closed one deal and I have yet to be told anything.

Can anyone provide an updated view of what the CS Toronto office is like? How large is it? What is the deal flow like? I've heard that it is largely technology deals but can anyone confirm?

Hey everybody I was researching for good hedge funds to work for in Toronto and I came across a post where several were mentioned. Does anybody know how well "Gluskin Sheff + Associates" fairs? I have read a lot on the BB banks in TO but seldom come across any HF information. Any other great hedge funds to intern at in toronto would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have been trying to find out what I-banking associate bonuses at the big 5 banks in Canada are, on average. I assume they are MUCH lower than in the US but I have no data at all on this. Does anyone have any data on year 1, 2, and 3 associate bonus levels (post MBA) at RBC, CIBC, BMO, Scotia, TD? Here's what I am assuming Associate 1: 70-80. (so with $85K Salary, total 155-165) Associate 2: 80-110 (so with $85KSalary, total 165-195) Associate 3: 120- 140 (so with $85K Salary, total 205-225) Is this pretty close? Or are they even lower? Again I have no info, except for base salary I am working at a boutique in NY and am thinking of hopping over to Canada but don't want to make way less. Can anyone give me a range for each of these levels?

I'll be working as a SA at one of the canadian banks (rbc, td, cibc) in Toronto for the upcoming summer and was wondering how I can position myself to get a job in NY for full time. I'm pretty sure there will be almost no job postings for positions in NY at my school for the upcoming year, so what am I supposed to do exactly to get an offer for IB in NY for full time?

So check this out: Twice a year, in Toronto, Bay Street professionals get the opportunity to beat their colleague to a pulp in a legit boxing match. They get 2 months to train, no prior experience, and they fight! Why not, right? Have a look at what blogto has to say about this: [quote]The Brawl on Bay Street is an bi-annual boxing match featuring high-powered financial executives that's now entering its 14th year. Designed as a sort of Freudian displacement for all the testosterone and combativeness that defines life on Bay St., the concept is pretty straightforward: executives with little to

Hey guys, first post, I'm currently at a half-decent school (University of Toronto at Mississauga) studying Commerce (50% Economics; 50% Accounting or Finance. For Americans I guess this would be a double-major in econ + acct or fin). I have to pull the trigger and choose either accounting or finance next year. I don't exactly know I want to do yet, but it's probably either Chartered Accountant (british commonwealth equivalent of CPA), Asset Management or IB. My school is a target for Canadian IB but my campus is not.

Hello, I will be going to a small lunch reception on Wednesday, where Kevin O'Leary will be present, and I'll have the opportunity to talk to him face to face. I am a senior in high school, and want to fully utilize this opportunity! How do I bring up the idea of offering my unpaid services as a summer intern at O'Leary Funds? What else could I do to make the best of this event? Should I offer to take him out to lunch one on one to discuss opportunities? I have an opportunuty to take over an insurance brokerage (valued at $4MM) if I can pay for the company. Would it be appropriate to lightly

I'm just wondering if anyone has opinions regarding what the best move is for someone looking to transition into management/consulting in Toronto from a Western Canada city (while planning to get an MBA) - a top 20 US school (or top 5 Euro like LBS/IESE, etc.) or a Schulich/Rotman/Ivey MBA? The reasons for wanting Toronto are simple: no green card issues, Toronto is one of the 5-6 most major markets in NA, and it is a great city. I have seen a lot of HBS, Duke, Wharton, LBS, IESE, etc. MBA alumni in Toronto and I'm wondering if since it is such a big market they attract top talent from these

Hello everybody, I got something to ask (even for ppl outside of Canada). According to many discussions within WSO forums, UWO's Ivey is seems to be most recognized undergrad b-school in Canada. I am currently at University of Toronto's Rotman Commerce. What do you guys think about these two options: 1. Transfer from U of T's Rotman Commerce to UWO's Ivey after second year 2. Finish U of T's Rotman Commerce in one year earlier and then do Masters in Financial Economics(MFE) which is mix of 12 month of studying + 4 month internship

Hey guys, Going through the interview process with a few boutique shops ($5-$10B AUM) in Toronto and want to have a general idea if/when salary comes up. Does $45-50k base with $10-15k bonus sound reasonable? I just want to be in the ballpark if the subject comes up. I've been working in wealth management for 6 months and have 3 internships on the buy-side while in school. Appreciate any suggestions.

Have an offer to move from IB in Toronto to New York in M&A at a Tier 2 / Tier 3 BB bank as an Associate. Would want to move back to Toronto in 1 - 1.5 years, is it still worth it to move to NY and experiencing the city (if possible when working in M&A in NY)? Would the experience be worth it , while also needing to devote time to completing Series exams? As an alternate option, I have an alternate offer at a RE PE shop locally.

Please advise me - would it be better to accept a top BB (GS/MS) offer from Toronto/Calgary office? Or mid-tier BB (think UBS/DB/Barclays/Citi) in NYC? Both are IBD... Which is better for PE exits? Would the GS/MS name outshine the regional difference?

Hi Everyone, Has everyone heard anything good or bad about Rotman's MBA, part-time program in particular? I could only find older discussions. The cost is close to $100k and it's very reputable in Canada but how is it known in the U.S.? Does anyone even know about it? Apparently it's top 10 in Finance. I would like to hear what you would think if you met someone who would say they were from Rotman's MBA program. What would you first thought be? Thanks.

Hello, is there a big difference between typical hours worked at a Toronto US BB office versus the same level (analyst or other) down in NYC? I would imagine it is much less (60-65 hours for a Toronto office)??
