Best MBA for PE in Texas

I'm a first year associate at a MM PE shop in New York after doing 3 years as a BB IBD analyst. My long time girlfriend is from Houston and has made it explicitly clear that she would like to move there if/when we get married, which is my intention. Personally I have no ties to the state.

I will be applying to MBA programs next fall so my question is what schools are best for TX PE recruiting? I have a 3.6 GPA from Cornell and 740 GMAT. People occasionally get into HSW from my shop but in my case, there's nothing really eye popping about my profile.

Outside of HSW, what schools would be best for recruiting in TX? From skimming Booth/Kellogg/Columbia profiles, they don't appear to send many grads to TX. And after perusing this board and others, Texas McCombs seems to get praise even though it's not top 10. I'm in healthcare so I would probably also need to learn energy to work in TX PE but please correct me if that's wrong.

Essentially, what M7's have the best presence in Houston or is Texas/Houston some anti prestige place where Texas McCombs is just as good?

Not really sure. I would think it would be Mccombs as well. I've got to believe you could get in there with money as well. With your prior experience in PE I think you would get PE fairly easily in Texas and live like a king.

Also, Austin sounds like a great city to be in for the MBA.

I reached out to the Venture fellows a couple of months ago. You should as well.

Any tips for cornell? Ill be starting the MBA in August. In terms of restaraunts/going out/ any advice? Thanks

Thanks. I played a sport and was part of an athletic fraternity so that was my social life. I didn't know any Johnson people but grad students frequent the Collegetown bar scene like anybody else. Bars close at 1 AM which is the biggest drawback.

Texas and Rice are the two most respected in state schools. Although not as good as schools like Columbia, I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas shops taking Texas or rice kids over Columbia kids all else being equal. Since you don't have any ties to Texas other than your girlfriend living there, it may actually help you if you go to Texas. When I went through banking recruiting, I got a lot of questions about why Houston/why Texas since I had grown up in another state (even though I went to undergrad in Texas).

I've actually seen several Booth people in associate roles in banking in Houston, but PE may be a different story.

McCombs or Rice would be fine if you wanted to do your MBA in Texas, but will not really give you a leg up when looking for a PE job over say any school in the Top 10. It may give you more access to a variety of different types of work that you may have not previously considered (consulting, IB, corp dev, startups). MM+ firms here in Texas will typically be energy focused and there are plenty of IB/PE analysts/associates with specific experience in energy who you will be competing against so that will be tough. If your heart is set on PE, I'd focus on family offices and generalist firms (but there aren't that many of these guys in Houston and they don't consistently hire). You might need to consider expanding your horizon past PE if you are being honest with yourself.
