What do you think about classic hats? Fedoras, berets, newsboys, etc?
Apart from the common tropes on reddit about fedoras being for loser nice boy types, what do you guys thinking of wearing fedoras in everyday streetwear? Would you don one?
Oh, and please, I mean strictly fedoras. Not trilbies (which are often associated with the PUA scene).
I was personally thinking of getting a Panama straw hat for myself for the summer and a felt fedora for the winter (to cover the balding head). Of course, would follow all the proper etiquette (like not asking women out with a hat for peacocking, not prancing about like a fucking pony with the hat, not pulling out cheesy pick up lines on chicas).
EDIT- What do you think about hats in general? Not strictly fedoras. And why do you think Latin Americans and some Europeans can easily pull off a Borsalino compared to Americans or Asians?
EDIT 2:- Pretty sure if I won't wear a hat, I'll at least hire a Mariachi band on my wedding
EDIT 3:- I've seen that fedoras are relatively more popular and even mainstream in Japan and Korea. Looks like they haven't caught up with the reddit trope
Pretty pretty pretty pretty gay

You're one of my faves Frank. So with all due respect, let me just stop you there. Nope!
Looks good on some people, many can't pull it off. You need a certain face structure. For example, "Neal Caffrey Fedora" on google images. I couldn't do that... sadly.
Yeah......I wasn't intending something close to Neal Caffrey's style, but closer to Theophilius London's. Wide brimmed fedoras, basically.
Okay guys, advice heeded.
But let's make this a broader discussion. Which hat would you wear for the streets? Of course, I'll assume you're not a douche and will remove this hat when indoors and not use it as a prop to pick up chicks.
Why? Because a.) feels really odd wearing beanies and baseball caps to work with a suit, especially when I'm in some shithole TW country b.) timeless solution to receding hairline and baldness.
Bad, poor style, shameful!
Very, very bad. Just awful. Sad!
What's wrong with the two of you?
Generally no, but I know people that can sport them. The issue is the general assumption of someone wearing one being a d-bag.
If you're referring to walking to work in a suit or something, I wouldn't think a newsboy cap would look too bad. I guess I don't know what you look like, but if it looks alright on you, people probably won't complain, right? It's definitely going to stick out...but if it doesn't look bad, then don't worry. The issue with fedoras is that all those overweight neckbeard nerds - I say that with kindness - started wearing them and made a bad name of them. If you think about the 20s, everyone wore fedoras and they didn't look bad on the average person. Now they are associated with My Little Pony fanboys.
If you're talking about wearing nice clothes - business casual or the whole get up, you're right that a beanie or baseball cap are going to look odd. I'd go with newsboy cap, personally. I feel ya on the thinning hair/balding thing. WHEN THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING TO FIGURE OUT A CURE FOR THAT??? I'm going to have to resort to getting a transplant from my bush soon.
Just put on a harvard golf cap and call it a day.
Do they still sell those?
Thanks, now I know where to buy those.
If your double digit age does not begin with a mid-6 number and up then no.
speaking of hats, my uncle has been proudly wearing a Beret around Manhattan for the last ~30 years... i think he pulls it off pretty well.
also he says he gets tons of compliments from the spanham crowd.
Yeah, but why can't I change the title of this thread to something more generic? Like favorite hats or whatever?
I personally don't prefer the beret. Reminds me of old Scottish dudes and Frenchmen in bars.
i'll update the title for you Sr
A big no-no!
Hats are not for civilians
To preface: I think the correct answer is definitely whatever your opinion happens to be. God bless everyone in spite of their silly fedora or trilby wearing tendencies.
But lest you anyone get any false sense of security, I will just add this: if your career potential is based on others' perception of you, then you may want pause to answer the following questions before donning that lid:
What is the difference between a trilby and a fedora?
If one make you look like a tool, does other one make you look you're cool?
How likely is the following meme to be true?
I guess it's about being able to pull it off, while making it seem effortless. The key idea here is to not make the fedora the core part of your attire.
All I can say is I tip my hat off to Frank Q.
Honestly dude, I don't think there's much for you out there. Baseball caps and beanies aside, the only other hats that are culturally accepted only look good on men from a few generations back or guys that are wildcatters out in TX. Otherwise you're going to hazard looking like some kind of pretentious fool.
Where's BlackHat when you need his advice?
Top hat or bust. Ideally paired with a fat cigar, trim moustache and a long thin umbrella.
Link broken...
EDIT: - Got it http://www.istockphoto.com/photos/cigar-english-culture-british-culture….
I can pull off a bowler, and most here could I suppose, but it only works well with a black suit and cigar.
The guy with the bills is beyond cringey...
With hats it's really a matter of the rest of the outfit. If you're not wearing an overcoat (or at least a thick sports jacket), you shouldn't be wearing a fedora either. You also have a certain maturity about you to pull it off.
With a Panama you're going to have to resemble a grandfather or great uncle. A middle aged guy with a fedora and overcoat works in my mind, the same guy with a summer suit and a Panama seems kitsch.
Shouldn't be a problem for you OP. Japanese fashion also has a whole lot more than just fedoras, it's a different wold on the streets of Tokyo.
I think they can look really great, I would suggest almost explicitly wearing it with an overcoat. I think you can pull it off if you have the right style otherwise it's suited to a more mature look. If your young and don't have the right imagine you look like a complete knob head hahah.
I agree, fedoras are best paired with a trenchcoats. I guess I'm into the whole 1920s-40s classic look, because I'm into both. Plus Tommy Guns.
If you are asking an internet board for validation about wearing a hat, hate to break it to you but you are too self conscious to wear a hat. I will often times wear a hat when I go out, some dudes will crack jokes but those jokes stop pretty quick when the valet pulls my car around.
I like the idea of that. Maybe I'll even try looking for a fedora with IDGAF on it.
There's nothing inherently good or bad with hats. Just like there's nothing inherently good or bad with most things
It's all about the person, and what something means to you, that determines how it will be perceived by others. If you're doing it to fit in or impress, then it will look most likely pathetic (not because of the hat itself, but because of your motivation behind wearing it). But if you wear something because you love it and don't give a damn what people think, then that's another story
For the record, I can think of this one dood that pulls off a hat reasonably well...

Jon Hamm, Matt Bomer, Theophilus London, John Legend and Diddy are a few people in today's world who can pull it off. I guess black guys can pull it off amazingly well.
Its a no from me
@Frank Quattrone" My name is DR Mantis Toboggan, and admit to wearing a fedora in public. Ill wear it in the winter with my coats and when it rains during every other season (also as a coat accessory). I'm sure everyone i meet for the first time thinks of me as a tool bag, but it's kind of whatever. I think it is a classic American look and worth trying to take back from all the redpill-neckbeard fucks of the world.
At this point I'm pretty much just holding out hope that people will see me and eventually take a queue that it's not the worst thing in the world.
We share the same views, Dr. Mantis Toboggan. Let's start the revolution and take back from the neckbeard nerds what's rightfully a heritage of modern society. Maybe enlist some help in the process too.
Gotta go with the Bryson Dechambeau hat.
Sure, for golf. Not in daily life though.

Idk how casual your office is, maybe a Yankees fitted stickers still on with a doo rag underneath?
Not casual enough. The group's casual though, the firm's culture is more whiteshoe.
No.
NF, NF, NF and NF. Next please?
You into Christian rap or something?
Cowboy hat, riding chaps and two six shooters.
