I am an avid poker player and have been for the last several years. it started in high school, when I read my first poker lit. Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky. I studied the game intensively and bought every recommended book. I have read and own Theory of Poker, holdem poker for advanced players, super system 2, phil gordan's little green book, Caro's book of tells, harrington on hold'em, sklansky's new NL ring book, plus some others. I also participated actively in poker forums (2+2, pokeranalysis, somethingawful poker section)

Needless to say I started off playing games with friends. That's how my interest started. I will say that I am currently a math major, and have a pretty good analytical mind and consider myself fairly astute. I started playing online first with 10 dollar buy in. It was .25/.5 Limit poker online. I think I lost. Nevertheless I kept studying the books and redepositing. I found a website to get a free 50, and started really working on my game.

In several months I turned that 50 dollars into 500, and cashed out. I guess you could call it an addiction, since it is fun although a very bad habit. I soon moved into the NL game at small stakes (.25/.5 100 max buy in). I know buying in with 100 seems like a lot to some, but in a poker's player's mind that is chump change.

I think within the first 6 months of online poker I made around 10k. Of course the legitimacy of online poker was still in question. I used Neteller, and kept track of all my winnings. I needed the money to pay for textbook and other college expenses since I didn't have a part time job. There were days when I made 1000 a night, and I quickly moved up in stakes to around 2/4 NL (400 max buy in) while playing more than a couple tables at once.

After the government started getting involved, I stopped playing for quiet a bit. Also the online game was drying up as the poker boom was stopping. In 2005 I stopped for a good 6 months and really concentrated on schoolwork (not that poker hand much of an effect on my grades anyway).

However, as recently as this past September when the school year began again I realized I needed money, and went back to playing online. I don't consider myself a MAPS by all means and do consider poker a game of skill. I played NL5/10 (1000 buy in). Those were some scary buyins. Sometimes I would lose 2000 in just one hand, other times I would win 5000. The thing is I needed the money;. I didn't particularly enjoy it as I approached it from a mathematics perspective.

I'm not sure how caught up you are about the recent poker news but the US Department of Justice really started cracking down on poker. The online e-wallet (Neteller aka poker paypal) recently got shut down in the US, and even the founders of Party Poker got arrested. Nowadays there is absolutey no way for US residents of playing online, since any means of depositing and withdrawing onlien have been eliminated.

I actually believe telling interviewers you play poker helps you nail the job. You need the same skills such as thinking under pressure, analyzing risk, getting information...etc.

Actually you can use this website called epassporte.com and load money onto that. Fulltilt poker accepts that. They also accepted my buddy's credit card and he lives in the US. Are you a banker?

I'm about to poker + cycle.

The art of playing poker (America's Cardroom) while indoor cycling on Zwift. The only real way I get paid to ride my bike - haha.
