Phone call tomorrow with VP at a PE firm, how do I approach?

Hey guys, I’m a sophomore majoring in Econ/Stats at a target public, and I just started emailing Alumni. I heard back from and have scheduled a phone call with a VP at MM PE firm tomorrow. This is the most senior person who wants to connect with me, and I am kinda nervous for my call tomorrow.

I would like to get an internship at his firm, but I don’t have any finance experience, and I figure that I wouldn’t even stand a chance. I’m worried that if I were to ask for an internship, my attempt to connect would seem disingenuous. How should I approach this?

Just speak to him casually (formal nonetheless), learn about the firm, the investment profiles and ask about COVId affecting portcos and stuff. Don't mention internship at all. Then a couple of months later (December, jan). Speak on the phone again and talk about a potential internship (use info from first call to build a case).

I agree with everything that the prior person said. I would also give off the vibe that you are just trying to learn as much as you can. If you seem intellectually capable and eager to learn, I'm sure you can translate this first conversation into an interview later in the year for a summer position. Also, do your homework on the firm before the call. Don't sound like a total idiot.
