Horrid Boss gets a smack in the mouth
Today, after 19 consecutive days of horrific abuse, I let my boss really f*cking have it.
Background:
I'm currently an MSc Economics student in the UK. Two days a week I work at a very well known PE shop in London. I was a Summer intern there last year and I've been keeping the gig up part time whilst at school.
This month, there hasn't been any lectures as its exam season and mine aren't until June. So, I've been full-time at my shop for all of this month.
Story:
I've been on site every day for the last 19 days - day in day out, no days off. It's in the middle of nowhere, but it's a really interesting deal and, if it goes through, it'll look really good on a CV.
Up until now, I've had a really great relationship with everyone at the shop. That is, until one of the partners here found out I grew up on a council estate (read social housing project) and has given me an absolutely horrid time over it. He's mixed it up with some racial slurs (I have an Irish Father and Italian Mother) that have progressively got worse and worse (giving me the nicknames "woppo" and horrible little potato farmer" is probably the most polite thing he has said to me).
At first, I thought he was just trying to test my metal, so I took it on the chin and got my head down. But then I began to really question what this guy's deal was? He started giving me really unnecessary jobs to do that kept meant the earliest I ever left site was 02:30 am - I'm talking about sh*t like moving boxes of files into his car and repeatedly sending me back and forth with them for no reason, which meant that the actual work I had to do took double the time.
Now, this has been going on for nearly three weeks. Until today, when he made a reference to my Father that just brought out the hulk in me. I'd pulled one of many all nighters the night before and had to meet him early this evening in the on-site canteen to go through some analysis. Before I knew it, I'd smacked him in the mouth, pulled him up of the floor and slapped him really hard in the face. I then walked and I'm on the train back to London right now.
I've had calls, emails and answer phone messages from everyone who has heard about it already - lawyers, accountants and bankers - asking what's happened.
I don't know what to do. What are the consequences of this?
In case this isn't bullshit....
You could get screwed but so could he. I have no idea what the laws are in the UK but I'm sure that form of abuse is more than just looked down upon. Its one thing to give someone shit, its a while different thing to incessantly rail on someone for ethnic differences. Did anyone see what happened?
Whatever happens, I bet that smack felt fucking amazing.
EDIT for clarity: You need a fucking lawyer, now, and a good one.
Wow. First off, getting physical is unaceptable, no matter how much this asshole verbally abused you.
This guy is probably going to seek some kind of legal action. Consult a lawyer ASAP and follow their advice. DO NOT follow any of the advice on this board, it may get you in more trouble, I am being absolutely serious on this one.
Get a lawyer now and don't talk the cops unless your lawyer is present.
OHH THE PARDOX!
SB'd... misspelling of Paradox was money, even if unintentional
The guy deserved it but you could get in serious trouble for this. Don't talk to anyone outside your immediate family and a lawyer.
I wouldn't have done that - I would have punched him the face, then kicked him while he was down. He sounds like a horrible human being.
Seriously, that guy deserves to be out on the streets begging for money. What a piece of shit.
Blumie's alter ego? :)
I actually found myself in this very situation when I was a young enlisted Marine. I was one of the top guys in my field and was selected for OCS (Officer Candidate School). I had a dick for a boss and beat the shit out of him at work one day. It effectively ended my Marine Corps career. Problem was, I had another 3 years on my contract. I got shitcanned to the worst jobs and never saw another promotion the entire time I was in. I even went before a meritorious promotion board during the Gulf War and they were all set to promote me until the lone Sgt. Major on the panel reminded them what I'd done a couple years before. No promotion.
On balance, it might be the best thing that ever happened to me. I got out of the Marine Corps as fast as I could and got into finance where I made a shit ton of money. A funny corollary to this story is that the dick in question remained my boss for all but my last few months, and continued to be a pain in mine and everyone else's ass the entire time. Finally, our OIC got fed up with his shit, ordered our entire shop to form a circle in the parking lot, called my boss and I into the middle of the circle, and I proceeded to beat the shit out of him again, this time dislocating his shoulder in the process. A true Marine Corps remedy.
Hopefully Mr.1234 is just being alarmist and finance guys today haven't risen to the level of pussy that would get the cops involved in a gentleman's disagreement. That said, at the very least I'd say you're done there.
The whole world has turned into a big pussy. Shit like that does not fly today.
This thread delivers.
Eddie, what kind of stuff was your boss doing?
This is fucking awesome.
Something similar happened to Dick Fuld. He was protecting a younger officer.
HAHA. Something similar happened to Dick Fuld in the Lehman Brothers gym after he ran the company into the ground. Homeboy walked up and knocked Dick the fuck out.
Please tell me you documented his taunts, racial epithets, harassment etc. If you did, it will mitigate ALOT...
Kudos to you man. But going forward, God forbid this every happen again, hit yourself in the face first (I've done it when I was drunk and it takes more strength than you know) then fall on the person. Then proceed to whip their ass. They'll be stunned when you hit yourself which buys you time to go give em' a couple of haymakers in "self-defense" immediately after.
Just a suggestion. Good luck.
HHAHAAH
Don't worry. I don't think he's going to take any legal action. What he's going to lose out of a legal action is much more than any benefit, both monetary and non-monetary.
Monetary Loss: time + $ to lawyers Non-monetary Loss: reputation
I think he's going to swallow it and you'd soon receive your sacking letter.
I'd say seek legal counsel.
But, I would have knocked him on his ass for that remark as well without thinking twice. NO ONE is going to talk down on me that much and to that extent without consequences, period.
I have no evidence whatsoever of the things he has said to me. Although witnesses have sympathy with me, they aren't going to put their path to partnership in jeopardy.

There's no way I can afford a lawyer right now.
Stuff like that actually does fly outside of the US at times.
You have the best reputation in the UK for the year 2011. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Clarkey, you are my new idol. I wish i had the balls to do that (even though i really like my boss so i wouldn't hit him, and he'd kick the shit out of me). You are already probably really fucked, might as well finish the job off...stuff a potato in a tube sock and beat him to death, he will be pretty pissed but should respect the irony of his death.
Do update us on what happens...
Badass, I wish I had a job I could give you for being a real man. A silver banana will have to suffice.
What about going back to work like everything is alright and doing your projects, he'll know not to f with u, or else you will work him,lol It might actually work
Get a lawyer.... but you'll probably be fine. I doubt this guy really wants to make a big deal of getting his ass kicked by an intern and being a racist bitch.
@vadremc: Fight Club-style wins.
Still laughing at the suggestion of getting a lawyer because he hit someone....chill out the guy will realise he was being a prick and probably apologise to you....
And a 5 star thread was delivered ....
Wow. Sorry you had to go through that. Please update us on what happens.
Wow... sorry to hear Clarkey. I mean, I figure older guys may come from a different time where racial slurs and jabs about someone's origins is the norm, but you'd think that they would know where to draw the line and have a bit of class. You mentioned that you got along with everyone else - have the other partners at this firm said anything when this one guy's being a dick?
If he's a partner at a well known PE firm you'll likely have a VERY hard getting a job in finance if he really wants to make your life hell (which it probably seems he does).
While beating the shit out of him is probably what I would have done as well in the heat of the moment, your biggest mistake was allowing it to get to the heat of the moment. If you would have assessed the situation as all of this was going on, you would have realized that hitting him hurts you much more than it does him and he has more power than you so after you hit him, he has the satisfaction of making your life a living hell. As bitchy as it seems, the best way to harm him is reputationally... i.e. the firm and the guy. So you should have first confided in the senior person who likes you, if he didn't stop the guy, then complained again to HR, and again and again. Until finally if it continues, which it probably would have, you sue him and the firm. You're complaining to establish that you raised it to their attention and nothing was done. Then you get it in the papers. The firm and the guy will suffer immensely through repuatational harm. They may give him the boot to save face.
As for legal issues, unless there were witnesses/cameras, its he said, she said. You can say he continuously verbally abused you and you didn't know what to do so you let it go without complaining and it kept escalating until he finally escalated it to hitting you and you hitting him back.
In any case... this is either completely made up or someone fantasizing about what they should have done if [insert pussy rationalization here].
He can't press charges if he is dead...
Update.
Went into the office yesterday and the Managing Partner asked how I would like this resolved. I asked for an apology and was told that I wasn't going to get one, although everyone agreed that I deserved one.
I still think that this guy has it in for me and is likely to plant some traps in the future. I haven't spoken to him but I'm thinking of going to him and trying to draw a line under this.
For what it's worth, I regret knocking him about simply because there may be further consequences to it. For now, though, I'm good.
Yeah, the consequence is that you drink for free in any bar I meet you at for the rest of your life. The only mistake you made was asking for an apology when you spoke to the Managing Partner - you can't punch somebody and then ask for an apology.
Drinks on me too Clark
That's great news. But start looking for something else.
Yep, contingencies man, always be prepped.
+1 On Eddie's advice.
Looks like the firm isn't ready to fire you over this given that they let you into the building and things might be moving on at least as far as personnel decisions are concerned.
Don't quit without a new job lined up, but try and find another job ASAP.
Consider yourself very lucky and make sure this doesn't happen again in the next ~20 years.
...
Wow, this guy has to feel like such a little bitch....Did anyone pull a smokey on him and say "You just got knocked the fuckOUT!"
Awesome. I've dealt with some rude bosses, but nothing like that. Be grateful he's not pressing charges. Feel lucky that you have both your self-respect, your job, and your legal status intact, and as Edmundo said, start job searching ASAP.
you still have your job? If yes, then I think you are being tested by your boss :D
Id start searching for another one just incase, like the others have said
Ya, can we have an update...
yeah, what happened in the end?
Ya if you're ever in Chi town drinks on me.
If you're ever in Saudi Arabia drinks on me ... will that be crystal water or mineral water? ahahaha my hero
Wait...help me out here guys. Is it more degrading to yourself to smack someone (vs. punching them) or is it more degrading to the other person to be smacked (not punched) by another dude?!?!
I was actually going to give you a hard time for smacking the guy but after thinking about it for a second I decided that he should be far more embarrassed about being slapped in the face by another guy, lol.
Good job man. I can't say what you did was right, because there will certainly be consequences (career wise and probably legally as well) but I'm sure it felt great. Congrats?!?! LOL.
Regards
Double points if you backhanded the dude.
I think slapping another dude is way more awesome than punching another dude. In the words of the great Rick James, what did the five fingers say to the face?
Pushing the face is by far the most disrespectufl. It says, i don't have enough respect for you to punch or slap you... just get the fuck outta here.
Muffing is the shit, I agree but in this case he wanted to hurt him not embarrass him
Haha, i did not know it was called muffing....hilarious.
Muffing?!? I've never heard that term used. Urban Dictionary defines 'muffing' as forcefully pushing female genitals against the face or something like that, lol. I've always heard it described as 'smushing'...which is a combination of smash and push...that is of course prior to Jersey Shore.
Regards
I haven't heard anything from him or about the incident since. This leads me to believe that it's either over with, or he's taking his time and slyly building something up that's going to fuck me over.
As you can imagine, I've thought about every possibility - what he can do, what he might do, what he is likely to do etc. I suspect that he knows this and my punishment is that I'll spend the next five to ten years worried shitless that he's laid a trap or he'll bite me in the ass.
I am finding the silence quite worrying though. I was sure this would have travelled like wild fire but it looks like it has died a death (not that I'm saying I'm relevant at all, it's just that London is small and relatively closely-knit).
In all honesty, I'll keep potential consequences at the back of my mind and address them if they come to light. I'm not going to spend all my time shitting myself. If he fucks me over though, I know he has a nice daughter that wouldn't mind some Clarkey action and he'll get the video sent straight to his inbox. (Although that would be a very uncharacteristic thing for me to do).
A word to the wise, though. Although this guy is a racist pig and hates kids from shit neighbourhoods, the consequences of doing what I did far outweigh the thirty seconds of pleasure I had. I'm always looking over my shoulder and I wish that I'd had just taken it to the gym. I do have my pride intact though.
And drinks in any major city you decide to visit (I'm in Chi town)
Just for the record 'smacking' means punching here in England....
Here it means you're a girl, lol. Thanks for clarifying...though smacking him would have been hilarious too...it does explain how he ended up on the floor, lol.
Regards
He'll probably screw you over down the line when it comes time for you to jump ship to another firm, etc. It'll be silent and you won't have any idea why you didn't get the job. If you can land that job sooner rather then later, you'll be thanking yourself.
Free drinks whenever you're in Toronto btw...
I'll buy you two, maybe three drinks in London. And none of that fancy cocktail shit...just a good ol' pint.
We need an update on this.
Nothing to report. It never stopped me moving to a bigger and better fund, but I'm still shit scared.
bump
Clarkey, talk to the lawyer just in case you boss decides to bring something up in the future. You're the man, kudos to you
You're a Swanson.
You can't be serious. I call baloney.
