Hedge fund & Private equity fund

I'm now working as an 2nd analyst in PwC transaction service team and now got 2 offers:

  1. Research analyst in one of biggest value hedge fund in China with over 5 B USD focus on HK and NASDAQ, support the whole investment associate team in equity research.

  2. Investment associate in a middle size Private equity fund with about 300 M USD focus on small to middle US manufacture target, add value though manufacturing shifting and set up sourcing center in China.

Can anyone provide some kind advices? Thanks!

Out of curiosity are you with PwC in China/Hong Kong? Because those are killer opportunities compared to the typical for US transaction services associates.

Are both roles in China? It sounds like they will be very different in terms of work/culture just because of the differences between a $5bn fund and a $300mm fund and the differences between PE and HF investing.

The HF will likely be more stable ($5bn is pretty big and likely not going away any time soon), but will (probably) be more hierarchical. Value investing in China is kind of in an interesting place right now (I assume that the company focuses on Chinese companies listed on the NASDAQ?). HFs are much faster-paced in their investing than PE, even at a value-oriented fund.

The PE fund will probably give you more responsibility (smaller fund), more operational focus (dealing with the company hands-on and effecting the offshoring) and a long term, private-company outlook.

There have been many great comebacks throughout history. Jesus was dead but then came back as an all-powerful God-Zombie.

Thanks for your comments.I'm In mainland China. And the 2 roles are also both in China. HF is about 15 investment staff. Correct, most deals are Chinese companies in NASDAQ and HK market.

Actually PE is more like my past working experience, but HF is really a interesting job i'd like to try, not to mention it's a great shot, big fund with pretty investment record, a good chance to learn.

Actually the PE role is more related to my past working experience, especially on Due Diligence work. But the PE is relatively small with a slow investment pace( 300 M USD since 06, still going) and with a special Philosophy, that is move US company factory to China so as to achieve better financial record.

Given the state of the US, Id recommend the chinese firm simply because of the financial instability of the US. China may have some problems down the road with a housing bubble and social problems, but I doubt that these will be comparable to what Im seeing as high potential risks for staying in the US.

Course, I dont know much about living in china, so I cant say. Id personally feel lonely living there w/ little to connect to.

what's the responsibility of the hf offer? sometimes a "research analyst" is just a bitch job doing literally compiling all the capiq data . If it means you are going to on the investment team as well, i would say go with the hf offer.

I see. I guess the major task is to handle "research work", and may partly involve in the investment process.
