H1-B Lottery - Any international monkeys?

So any international monkeys screwed by the H1-B Lottery? Unfortunately it seems I didn't get picked so will be heading home in the summer

Unbelievable you work your ass off for 2 yrs to get a gig and then your fate is decided by a random lottery with no sense of merit

Any others have had an experience with H1-B over the years?

Share your experiences (or of people you know) What was your plan B if it didn't work out!

I can imagine that is very disappointing. I have some friends who are going through that right now. Large financial services firms are usually willing to transfer people to an office abroad. After a full year, you can come back to the US on L-Visa, or just stay there. Have you explored that option with your firm (assuming they have a global presence)?

they were trying to look at Japan as an option(you can guess the firm now im sure). But i dont wanna go there (though doesnt really matter) and there is the added complication of the fact that majority of business there is conducted in Japanese.

the london office is small-ish but what sucks for me is that they dont have the same group there.

looks like i will be heading home in the summer but theres a good chance i might be end of a job end of the month period. they'll let us know in a few days

Haha indeed it's not a hard guess which firm it is. Were HK/Singapore out of question as well? Business language is English there. Just curious what's your plan B? Masters (assuming you don't have one already)?

I know two guys from a non-target that both didn't get it.. which I know everyone works hard to get the job, but just... damn... its like, so close but so far. Always thought there had to be a better system out there than the lottery...

i know it may sound like sour grapes or me simply whining but its an absolute embarasment and shame that Obama bended over backwards to make immigration easier for essentially illegal immigrants and did nothing to fix it for ediucated people who go through the legal route and want to contribute to society professionally (regardless of the personal gain). Its like a slap on the face of every aspiring legal immigrant

Still waiting here..and yes, the system is totally retarded and makes you jump through hoops. You have to play the game though.

Backup is a masters in Europe, hopefully I don't have to resort to that.

if you haven't heard back yet then you should mentally kiss your chances goodbye

still good luck though! we need it!

Such a ridiculous process. In london it is much better organized. Firms get a certain number of sponsorship pemits from Government each year, and can use them as they see fit. So basically if a firm wants you, and uses one of its permits for you, except if you have some issue in your application you are almost guaranteed to get it. So in they case there are too many international applicants, it's the firm that decides who to use its permits for, and allows you to plan much better in case they tell you they are not willing to do so instead of waiting for some shitty lottery

To anyone who knows about the process: once you are in an international office, can your firm sponsor you for H-1B again or is L-1 the only way to go back after a year? The only annoying thing with L-1 is that you may not leave your employer for a certain time if what I heard is correct.

Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

the h1b process happens every april so the firm will have to wait atleast a year to sponsor you again

so might awell go back on L1 as its guaranteed

Would like to bump this with an update on actions and timeline (as it may answer someone's questions some day): No H1B in 2015 -> Bank transferred me to London office -> Contacted NYC team in Jan 2016 and they said they would take me back -> Lawyers engaged early Feb -> Lottery again April 2016 -> Got good news on Apr 15th -> Transferring back in early October 2016 (H1B becomes effective Oct 1st)

Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

internationally focused firms = transfer

us focused firm = boot

it's not necessarily true that a US-based firm will give you a boot... i know that JPM has been very good in the past about relocating you. pre-crisis, C was also very committed to relocating individuals, although they did admit that people sometimes quit because they did not like the location to where they were sent

I assume you are mainly interested in IB etc so then I think big4 would be considered a back up given that the recruiting is less competitive. All I was trying to say was that if you really want to stay in the US and cant get an IB to sponsor you, then it might be worth looking into the big4 since it is easier to get those jobs and they still sponsor h1bs.

you need to know though, because it take more resources to hire an international student, the competition would be even more fierce. I think you can actually contact the banks or go to their websites to see their sponsorship policies?

I guess what I'm asking essentially is whether Kelley will put me in a strong position to get these banks to sponsor me, in terms of name prestige etc. As for the academics I will definitely work hard, to make sure that I am able to get into the IB workshop, however in the case that do not, where would that place me as an international from Kelley? Would the banks still hire from Kelley as compared to ivies?

So you've decided to attend northwestern? Mind sharing what motivated your decision to study in the states despite the high school fees? Need a push in the right direction,

I like the American liberal arts education and its idea of "well-rounded human being." Also, I definitely think Kellogg will provide more opportunities than schools outside the US. hbu?

Well, i'm still really very lost regarding my decision, and i have 2 days left to decide. Im particularly concerned due to Indiana university's brand name as a whole. I know that Kelley is a top program and is well ranked, however i'm sure that from where you come from (which is where btw?) i do not think people from your region may have heard of it, mainly due to the prestige and brand name factor of IU as a whole. Schools like Umich and maybe northwestern have good prestige as a school overall, so i wouldnt worry too much about that. It would be a different story if i were admitted into Ross,or stern imo. Regarding opportunities, if i want to get a job in the US, i believe that the degree that i will get from my local university would probably not get me there, unless i take up a master's program in the US eventually. However, i would think that it has a good reputation in the Asia region, so opportunities within Asia would still be possible, assuming a high GPA, good networking and extra curriculars. I'm just worried that this extra money would be for naught, and it could also be used elsewhere, because if i am unable to get a job upon graduation, returning to Singapore would not be ideal. Salary wise, i would be the same the graduates locally, just that i'd be a good 150k behind them (even though i'm not taking on a loan). Advancement opportunities wise....nobody can say for sure. Right now, i'm not sure as to whether attending Kelley and paying all that money is a gamble or a long term investment.
