PF -> M&A
I’m currently a first year analyst at a large bank (think ING, BNP, HSBC), doing project finance largely in the renewables and power space. Project finance is interesting and I like the industry, but I realized I wanted to orient myself to something more related to the equity/returns story rather than just debt. How possible is it to spin this experience into a m&a role, preferably elsewhere? How are PF bankers viewed?
Bump. Very interested in this. Mind if I dm you about your experience in project finance?
Sure, feel free. I do admit it’s an interesting field if you’re curious about how infra works. That’s how I was originally drawn to the job.
In my group, there was a renewables PF guy who lateraled as an associated into M&A and from my experience this past summer was killing it. You should explore it within the same bank - I think that is your most likely Avenue.
I would agree, but m&a at my bank is nearly nonexistent in terms of deal flow so even if I joined their group, it’s not going to give me as good of an experience as in my current role where we have strong deal flow and a good amount of responsibility for juniors. If it was close I would take that step first, but I feel like I would be significantly better off doing IBD/M&A at a stronger platform.
