Who makes more Equity Research or Equity Sales?
Had this debate at my bank. Would appreciate if anyone had more color on this at various levels assuming you make it to MD.
I’m in ER and feels like sales doesn’t do a damn thing.

Career Resources
Prob sales. They are in the Sales & Trading department who has real revenue.
Equity Research is kind of like the COGS for sales and trading so that sales have something to sell to clients.
And based on my hunch that sales make more - it means customers value the S&T more than ER (as research reports have always been given to clients for free to entice business on S&T side).
What do they do though man… all the brain power is used in ER and trading?
They take clients out and reiterate our trading ideas…
They grow the relationship, entice more trades and upsell more services (derivatives, prime brokerage, etc.)
How do you grow the relationship? Take clients out, golf, ski, and other stuff.
EQ =/= IQ
Equity Sales is less hours and better pay, but exits are better for ER imo
Oh, my naive friend. You actually think using more brain power = more money?
Have you heard of theoretical physicists?
