Just signed full time, what do I invest my signing bonus in?
I am 21 years old and a senior in college. My signing bonus of $12,000 just hit and I have another ~$10,000 tucked away. I have no debt (shout out mom and dad) and am looking for a safe place to grow my money. I've been looking at the i-bonds and they seem great but I was wondering if anyone else had ideas for what to do with this cash.
You’re going to need to pay for moving expenses, travel, first month deposit, new furniture, new wardrobe, etc. when you graduate/start your new job. Maybe toss $5k at the broad market but keep most as cash, you’ll be sorry if the world continues to go to shit and you’re singing bonus disappears before your eyes.
While I-bond can be a solid move, it's going to lock up that $ for at least a year. Imo you don't have enough cash to do that in the event that you had an emergency. Always have some $ stowed away, more than you need in checking, etc. Always.
If I were you, personal expense needs aside bc I don't know your situation, of that $22k I'd invest about that $12k of it - half in an index ETF, half split between a couple individual stocks you know really well
