Just wondering what other PE/finance guys are tipping their MD this year. It's been a tough year for everyone with the continued ripples of COVID, high deal flow, etc. so want to make sure I'm not off-market. Luckily I just got my year-end bonus ($250k) so feeling generous. Was thinking $100 for each ASO/VP, then 20% of one paycheck to the MD (so 20% of my paycheck would be 20% * $3,600 = ~$720). Does that sound fair to you guys? Don't want to look like a cheapskate vs. their other analysts so just curious what "market" is

I once met an Analyst who didn’t tip his MD after year 1.
Needless to say, he’s probably still doing LBOs in the cubicle in the next to the secretaries, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
All he had to do was tip the guy a mere, say, 5,000-10,000 for all the MDs work, guidance, and general emotional support he had provided to the Analyst over the year.
This year, I’ll likely tip my MD anywhere from 25-35k after my bonus hits. Take notes.

It's a bit oldschool thing but some analysts still do. Steve Schwarzman (you know, that guy from Blackrock) has mentioned in many interviews that during his days at Lehman Brothers he got tips from several analysts and now these folks are MDs at his fund.

Gave my MD a second hand patek philippe the same day I handed in my resignation letter and announced I was moving to buyside. I could immediately tell from his frown that he had been expecting at least a brand new rolex. The next day the recruiter called and told me my PE offer had been withdrawn. Don't make the same mistake that I did, kids.

In the event this isn't fake - why would you tip your MD? Like ever? They're not a valet or whatever. Express your gratitude verbally and offer to go to dinner or drinks. It's just plain weird to give a few hundos to someone who's making way more than you in the first place. And as to looking a cheapskate, I sure hope that your firm hasn't normalized tipping senior folks. These are the guys paying you for your work - what in the hell does the tip even mean?
