In this market I would say as close to impossible as you can get. I'm a canadian in the states and have never even heard of Haywood.

I wouldn’t say it’s impossible if he’s down there networking. I have friends who made this happen without Banking experience. The difference was they were down there doing a masters in finance just so they can be down there to recruit.

Your challenge will be finding time to meet people in person and developing relationships, that’s how all of my friends got jobs down there. It wasn’t because of their competency. It wasn’t because of their intelligence (they couldn’t even get jobs in Canada). It was because they were there and had the opportunity to move around in the US to find opportunities.

With your experience, if you went to school down there or you spent time there and network, you could make it happen. But just remember this take time, and you will need to network with the entire team and have some luck that each team member will keep introducing you to someone above them.

I think your best bet is to first get into the toronto office of an american bank or a large canadian bank like rbc, then lateral to the nyc office.

Very very difficult for that to happen here. I’m telling you he has a better shot at just going to the US and trying to work there even with the visa issues. Banking in Canada is tiny. OP himself has said he doesn’t care if it’s a boutique or BB/EB. He’s fine with whatever. There are like a 100 regionals in NY alone.

Given how difficult it is to get sponsorship in this market (largely due to the flood of US talent itching for a job), I would say slim. Echoing the sentiments above, I would advise landing an offer at an American bank via Toronto office first then request for an internal transfer. Bay Street is rather small so best bet would be to network.

How hard is it to move internally to nyc office when working at an american bank in canada?
