IB to Private Banking / Wealth Management?
I know it's usually asked on here the other way around, but long-story short, have had 3-years of IB coverage group experience right out of school (3rd year analyst right before A2A this summer) but am looking at public market and macro-oriented roles as an exit (not interested in PE/corp dev or modeling).
Is this a feasible / difficult transition to make? I was previously looking at HFs/AM but am worried those roles might just be too technical in nature with regards to macro, and I'm also not very interested in stock-picking (prefer broader market / sector trends, macroeconomic data, etc).
Would I get any credit for my IB analyst stint going into these roles (perhaps coming in slightly more senior) or I would have to "start over" as if I were a first year analyst out of undergrad?
I don't want to throwaway the frankly grueling experience I've had the last few years, but am also open and flexible to different career paths available to me.
Thank you all and happy to chat further with anyone!
You might get some time, but I doubt you get it all. I knew someone who did it from a non IB analyst role into WM and he got some time. With that being said tho IB and WM are completely different careers so the skills are not very transferable between each other. You won’t be doing modeling really and your bigger focus is n meeting client needs aka customer service. It definitely depends on bank and shop, you’d probably have a better shot being in investment analyst at a WM but even then it’s very different. Hope this helps🥴
