Oil & Gas, Approaches to Gain Proper Industry Experience?

I'm a rising senior at a non-target in Alberta, Canada, with my goal being to accept an IB offer in Calgary; I worry though that my lack of a formal internship in the oil & gas industry is a major hit to my resume. I study available industry primers and am familiar with creating mock pitches for the couple of energy securities I monitor, but don't see this being enough to set me apart. I'm otherwise confident in my abilities - a successful co-op in operations for an asset manager, multiple leadership roles in student run clubs and two supplementary awards/certifications. Any help with this?

I can't specifically speak to O&G. But in Tech one of the best ways to learn about the industry is to not only network with service providers (bankers, consultants, lawyers ...) but talk to the people that live the industry day in day out. Send a message to a petroleum engineer, a field service technician, or an off-shore rig operator and see if they have time to chat about their jobs. The higher up the better as you will get more big picture which is easier to start to comprehend. Also - read transcripts from public players. These are essentially getting a CEO on the phone for you. Sadly they are usually focused on finance, why is why finding analyst day coverage can be super helpful as they will discuss operations and go-to-market strategies.
