Starting to work in UK IB as an International Student
I am a final year bachelor’s finance student in Russia. Currently, I am working as an Associate at one of the biggest IBs in the country with a deal experience of basically all Russian 2023 IPOs , several large M&As and etc. The thing is I have an offer for MSc Finance from UCL and am really struggling to understand whether I will be able to get into any IB position in UK with my experience or I will have to start from scratch (intern position). Being an Associate at 22 is uncommon in Russian IB, it’s just that I started working the first year of my bachelor’s (it is 4 years in Russia). What would be your advice in a situation like this?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a Russian IB to the UK market can indeed be challenging but is definitely feasible with the right strategy. Here are some steps and considerations to help you navigate this transition:
Leverage Your Current Experience: Highlight your role as an Associate and your involvement in significant deals like IPOs and M&As. This experience is valuable, even if the financial markets differ between countries.
Education as a Stepping Stone: Your acceptance into the MSc Finance program at UCL can serve as an excellent bridge. UCL is well-regarded and has strong recruitment ties with major IBs in London. Use this opportunity to network extensively and participate in finance-related events.
Understand the UK Market: Familiarize yourself with the specifics of the UK market. This includes regulatory environments, market practices, and key players. This knowledge will not only help in interviews but also in adapting your existing skills to the UK context.
Networking: This is crucial. Leverage LinkedIn, alumni networks from UCL, and any professional connections you have. Attend industry seminars and workshops to build new relationships.
Internships vs. Full-Time Positions: Given your experience, you might be able to secure a full-time position. However, be open to internships if they lead to more strategic opportunities. Sometimes, stepping slightly backwards can propel you forward in a new market.
Prepare for Differences in Recruitment Processes: The recruitment process in the UK might differ from Russia. Prepare for case studies, numerical tests, and multiple rounds of interviews.
Visa Considerations: Ensure you understand and comply with work visa requirements in the UK. Being an international student, you might have certain advantages under a student visa to work part-time or secure internships.
By strategically using your current experience and the educational opportunities at UCL, you can position yourself effectively for a career in IB in the UK.
