Request attendance to professional development events with employer sponsorship

I am interested in attending an industry professional development event run by the ABA in Washington, DC. How could I bring this up to my manager and see if the company would sponsor travel related costs to support my attendance?

Ah, the art of asking for sponsorship! It's all about framing it right, my friend. Here's a little wisdom from the WSO threads:

  • Start by doing your homework. Understand the event, its benefits, and how it aligns with your current role and future growth in the company. This will help you present a strong case to your manager.

  • Bring up the topic as early as possible. You don't want to spring it on them last minute.

  • Frame it in a way that you were presented with a mandatory/optional event. If it's not too much trouble, you'd like to attend.

  • Be clear about what you hope to gain from the event and how it will benefit the company. This could be learning new skills, networking with industry leaders, or gaining insights that you can bring back to your team.

  • Be transparent about the costs involved and ask if the company would be willing to sponsor your attendance.

Remember, it's all about showing the value you'll bring back to the team. Good luck!
