Warwick or Durham: which should I pick?
Hi Guys - got offers to study at both Warwick and Durham for ppe. I hear that Warwick is much more ‘targeted’ (sorry for the cringe term), but Durham still ranks well. I’m conflicted as I feel that I will enjoy Durham more as I don’t think I will be a good fit at Warwick at all. Could anyone please shed some light on what is best to do here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Warwick is better then Durham. But why dont you think you'll fit in there.
After visiting I just don’t think I would fit in. Not to knock the people of Warwick, I just can see a contrast in social aspects which would certainly deter some from attending one of the unis over the other.
go for where you think you'll strive at, the difference is negligible.
Warwick is better, but not massively, so I would probably recommend you go to the uni you feel you will enjoy more for the 3 years.
Thanks - this is the conclusion I am moving towards.
Have seen people reject one for the other and still have strong career trajectories. Generally if stem, go for warwick it's a target for anything 'quanty' if that's what you might be interested in and is slightly more respected in most stem subjects than durham. If humanities, go for durham as its slightly more respected in humanity subjects than warwick and is a top 3 target for law firms if that's what you might be interested in. If optimising for banking the difference is marginal, with warwick giving you a slight advantage so based on solely that you should pick warwick. However, how you make your decision should be more nuanced and you should consider what would be a better fit for you. If you're more of an extroverted posh drinking type and you want the benefits of a pretty cool college system like oxbridge then consider durham, however if this sounds like hell to you then go for warwick.
Thanks for the help - that’s along the lines of my comparison of the universities, visavis the social aspect. Tbh I think I would rather attend Durham and just put in a bit more work when it comes to internships etc than Warwick where I would be unhappy.
Durham grad here who worked in IB London - durham carries serious weight in biglaw. Warwick is certainly targeted more for quant roles as mentioned above (trading etc), hardly saw anyone out of my cohort get into those kind of roles but saw a lot of people in traditional BB/EB roles and more so at the MM banks.
There is an element of self selection into this as less kids at Durham are gunning for banking roles vs Warwick and other targets. A lot of kids push for law as it’s Durham’s flagship program alongside some other humanities. Social life is very much everything u hear about it online
I chose Durham over Warwick and Bristol and don’t regret it. However I would be lying if I said I think it gives you a material advantage in finance recruiting vs Warwick, i’d consider them neck and neck with Warwick winning the tie breaker if you needed to pick if you’re studying PPE
Best of luck champ
Thanks for the advice - out of curiosity, what did you study? Think I’m going to pick Durham though, despite your point about ppe.
humanities (history/law/philosophy)
I chose Durham over Warwick for an Econ/PPE type course, mainly due to sports and social life, no regrets on my decision - happy to answer any questions on Durham
Thanks for the comment. I’m gonna make that decision too. Do you have any tips for finance recruiting that are specific to Durham eg which Durham society is best for finance etc? No worries if not.
Shoot me a PM! Can go into more detail for sake of anonymity
I chose bocconi over both but was very close to choosing Durham. If I was given a chance again I would have chosen Durham for my undergrad and bocconi for my masters
