Career Resources
Texas A&M. The engineering program there is top notch.
Tbh I dont think you will get any traction from firms like DE Shaw or AQR from either schools. To say that they exclusively recruit from top targets would be an understatement - many are perfect SAT/GPA, math olympiad and putnam winners. Possibly AMZN or Google if you do CS and have top grades but I dont even think they even recruit at TAMU or SMU.
Would Rice University be a better option?
Yes, it still won’t be easy but Rice would give you a better shot for top STEM placement. Would consider UT as well, as they have strong programs and pipelines in place for STEM careers.
A&M better for engineering. SMU Alts program places really well in Dallas finance, less so elsewhere. Neither's gonna be helpful for DE Shaw and AQR
Big thing is culture at those two schools. Very different given size, location, student body, etc.
I think if you are solid candidate to begin with, your options will depend more on how much work you put in. I know there’s tons of programs within majors and colleges at A&M just given it’s size. They are pretty competitive to get into as well.
I went to A&M so can answer and follow up questions. Don’t know nearly as much about comp sci or stem track at A&M but may be able to help a bit.
I’m going to A&M this fall. Could you give me a few pointers to get on the track to IB?
Need to take accounting 229 freshman year to be able to apply for Aggies on Wall Street
Need to get involved in a finance club, usually the Aggie Investment Club
Need to have near a 4.0 freshman year
Need to take FINC 341 (the intro class I think that’s the right code) first semester sophomore year
Hopefully get a finance internship freshman summer but not a requirement I don’t think
Then would meet some students currently in Horizons and Aggies on Wall Street and get help to begin prepping. Best way as a freshman is thru the investment club but also thru fraternities if you join one with some upper class men in the programs
Transfer to a better school?
