Stop merging old threads

@WallStreetOasis.com" @AndyLouis"

There's an increasing amount of merged threads.

Illustratively, a popular thread like Ain't Nothing But A Peanut: Maintaining Your Best Health will have an entirely different thread "Getting old and staying fit (Originally Posted: 05/16/2012)" merged into it.

The problem with this is that all the subordinate comments to the shorter merged thread get dated as of the day the merge was made.

I now have a bunch of comments in my profile that look recent (made in the past few weeks or months) that were made as far back as 2011. This is not smart design.

Suggestion: stop making these nonsensical merges (it's an awful forum UI to begin with), or if you insist on keeping them, find a way to code the merge such that the subordinate comments retain their original dates.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, that does sound extremely annoying...I think this issue is largely because we have

1) gone too far down the database of content (need to start back up at the top, now we're merging weak with weakest instead of weak into strong of same topics)

2) the comments in the profile...you are 100% right, I will see if there is a way we can modify that.

In terms of why we are doing the merge, it is all for UX and it's a massive, largely manual effort.

Putting aside that annoying bump to older comments in your profile, what scenario do you think is better for the user when they are looking up "Topic X"?

1) Being able to read / find 2-3 relevant threads on Topic X, each with 10+ comments or... 2) Trying to jump across ~10 relevant threads, each with an avg of 2-3 comments?

Thanks again for your feedback, Patrick
