Airline Merger in the Works

Following the mega mergers of Delta and Northwest and more recently United and Continental, another airline combination is in the works in the United States. The Arizona based U.S. Airways Inc. (LCC) is currently looking to potentially acquire AMR group’s American Airlines (AAMRQ) based out of Ft. Worth Texas.

For U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker, this is the latest in a string of merger activity during his tenure. He successfully oversaw the merger of U.S. Airways and America West in 2005. In 2006 he unsuccessfully attempted a hostile takeover of Delta and in 2010 there were talks for U.S. Airways to merge with United.

Any Advantage for Americans Applying to International MBA Programs?

I'm just curious if there's an advantage for Americans applying to non-American programs, since it seems like most Americans would want to stick state-side.

I'd be particularly interested in INSEAD, HKUST, LBS, IMD, Said, and Judge.

Is Marriage Useless Today?

mod (Andy) note: "Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from November 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Has marriage become obsolete? According to a recent Time Magazine/Pew poll, 40% of Americans believe that marriage is obsolete today, and 44% of Americans under 30 believe the institution of marriage is soon to be extinct.

I can't think of a better topic to write about on my 8th anniversary.

You guys know how I feel about marriage from a practical standpoint: there's no percentage in it. Clearly, Prince William is not a WSO reader. All joking aside, though, is marriage dead? For someone in a lopsided income/asset relationship (where one partner earns or is worth far more than the other), how could it be to the advantage of the more financially successful partner to get married?

I got a call around 4:30 last Friday and when I checked the caller ID I saw that it was a buddy of mine in California. That was pretty odd, because it was only 7:30 in the morning in Cali and he's not an early riser. When I answered, it sounded like he was in his car. And he was excited about something.

"Dude, I just got a call from Mike and he told me the grains locked limit-up on the open. Is that true?" he asked.

"I haven't seen anything yet, but I'm not really paying attention. Which grain?"

"All of 'em."

American MSF vs Johns Hopkins MSF

Hello,

I am looking for opinions regarding MSF programs. I am deciding between the American University Kogod School of business MSF program and the Johns Hopkins Carey School of business MSF program. The Kogod MSF program is a full time 1 year program whereas the Carey MSF program is a part time 2 year. I hope to one day get my MBA and then work in corporate finance. In your opinion, which school will better prepare me for that. Furthermore, I am aware the Johns Hopkins Carey school is very up and coming. Do people think that one day the business school will be as successful as the medical school?

Thanks,
Alex

I realize my posts are borderline spam at this point in the BSchool forum because I keep asking about different schools but my situation keeps changing and I literally have 72 hours to move on these programs with regards to application submission:

University of Syracuse
Boston College
University of Rochester
American University

I am on the brink of applying to a MSF program and because it is so late in the admission process, only these options are available to me. Now I know most of you went to top schools, but Im hoping some of you, maybe considered any of these schools in the past and can share your findings with me. I would imagine best choice would be a program next to a large, urban area with a big alumni base.

U of Denver
U of Texas Dallas

Rochester (unlikely because of their costs)

break yo'self fool!

In a few short months, BP stock has lost over half its value and rumors of everything from takeovers and bankruptcy to lynch mobs roaming the countryside seeking the scalp of Tony Heyward, are running rampant. The next corporate entity in a growing line of scapegoats for the incompetent Obama administration, is considered radioactive by most analysts and investors at this point. Should this really be the case?

Chinese Market Indicates that US Stocks could be in for a Big Fall

oilprice's picture

Does the Chinese stock market presage the U.S. market's direction? If so, the U.S. market is set for a fall.

The economies of China and the U.S. are in effect Siamese Twins, joined at the hip. By pegging their currency to the U.S. dollar, the Chinese central government has tethered its economy to both U.S. policy and the U.S. economy.

Since the U.S. economy is still considerably larger than China's, and the yuan/renminbi is pegged to the dollar (and not vice versa), then we might expect China's stock market to follow the American market's lead.

As expected, the two markets are clearly correlated, often acting in lockstep (both rising or falling together). But China's markets also seem to act as the canary in the coalmine for the U.S. markets, declining before U.S. markets plummet.

Google’s Decision Highlights the Dangers of Doing Business in China

 on 3/17/10 at 2:03pm

The ramifications of Google's decision to leave China are deep: China's leadership, be careful what you wish for.

I have been a student of China for 40 years. Alas, no, I did not learn Mandarin. When I started reading about China in 1969, and taking university courses on its culture and history in 1972, the Cultural Revolution was in full swing. The People's Republic was locked down; other than a trickle of black-market trading with Hong Kong, nobody was allowed in or out. No young person today, Chinese or American, can even imagine conditions in that distant, bleak time.

In essence, China's leadership sacrificed two generations in the Cultural Revolution. It imprisoned, tortured, killed, banished, placed under house arrest, etc., the most experienced leaders of its society below the secretive high reaches of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) and Mao's inner circle.

Great American Group Salary Question, please PM me!

Hello,

I am a senior from a target school and have received a offer letter from a Valuation Company called Great American Group. The internship is paid and leads into a full-time position contingent on how the internship goes. I like valuation services and think it is a good industry fit for me but I was wondering if anybody knows the Salary for a 1st year analyst at Great American Valuation Group.

If you are a previous employee or might have any idea on what it might be, it would help me decide whether or not to take the internship. I have some offers pending at the moment but I wanted to compare what Salaries might be like.

If someone could help me out, I would be more than appreciative. Thank you!

One of the surprising things is the U.S. export market is actually fairing reasonably well.

People often pan America for having no exports. It's a common complaint the U.S. doesn't produce anything the rest of the world wants.

This is untrue. These critics latch onto the fact the U.S. produces almost no consumer goods. America doesn't make t-shirts and CD players. It's just not cost effective for these low-end products.

The U.S government moved toward an emergency rescue of American International Group Inc. -- one of the world's biggest insurers -- signaling the intensity of its concerns about the danger a collapse could pose to the financial system. Damn.
