How does Private Equity recruiting work in Texas?

I am a sophomore interested in working in Houston energy IB and was wondering how the recruiting process worked there. Do analysts get calls from headhunters or do they have to find opportunities themselves? What kind of funds do people go to? Megafunds? MM? And do the energy bankers end up in energy PE exclusively or can they do generalist PE?

What banks place well into PE (not necessarily energy in Houston, but in general in Dallas, Austin and Houston?)? I have heard that Barclays, CS and some small boutiques (simmons I think?) place very well into PE, but what about other BBs like GS, MS, DB, BAML as well as boutiques like Jefferies, Raymond James and Scotia Waterous?

Need advice - pursuing PE from abroad

Guys -

I would appreciate your view on the below point.

I am a 3rd year IB analyst at one of the BB offices based in Moscow, Russian native-speaker.
I have just moved to London office and going to work from here. Searching for buy-side opps resulted in the decision to look for them in the US: PE opps in Moscow are meaningless and the overall situation in Europe is not promising. So eventually I decided to pursue one of M7 b-school programmes (at least to get an access to the US labor market and see if MBA helps to land any fund).

If I apply in fall 2013 I can potentially get into 2014 MBA class, so I will have roughly 5 years of IB experience overall (3.5 in Moscow and 1.5 years in London). Then, after the graduation, I would ideally look at MM PE shops.

PE in London Vs. NY

So the well trodden path of 2 years at a top BB IBD group, 2 years pre-MBA assoc at a PE firm, HBS and then megafund superstardom is well known to most of us on here. However my understanding is that this is primarily the US/NY model.

What I'd like to know is how do things work in the UK - where I'm from - are things totally different, what sort of experiences have you heard of, whats the most expedient route from Analyst 1 to PE etc. etc.?

Further to that, to the guys at IBs/PE shops stateside how many Brits do you encounter around the office?

Dear all,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. So I will get straight to the point. I am next door neighbors (to be precise, I live in the building just across) with a top level executive (think "heir apparent") at a major PE firm. Every once in a while, I see this person on the weekends as he comes in or out of his home.

Now, if I were to reach out to this person by email, it is highly unlikely I would ever receive a response (at best, perhaps his secretary would send me a polite reply on his behalf) as he is too high up. On the other hand, if I were to have a "chance" encounter with him on the street and a brief chat, there is nothing that says it could not lead to something more.

Early Tuesday morning, Cerebus Capital Management announced that it would sell off its assets in Freedom Group, an American firearms company which owns companies such as Bushmaster and Remington Arms. According to sources, an official at the California teachers’ pension fund, which has $750 million invested with the private equity firm, was on the line raising questions about the firm’s ownership of the Freedom Group.” It is also known that the father of Cerebus Capital’s owner – Stephen A. Feinberg, lives in Newtown, Connecticut where the recent shootings occurred. Other companies such as Dick Sporting Goods has put a halt on selling semi-automatic weapons in 480 stores.

Wanted to get some opinions here on possible career paths ahead. This is how my CV shapes up,

- Graduated in the top 1% of a top undergrad business school
- 2+ years IB experience with a large European bank (one of the largest globally)
- Moved into Disney Corporate Strategy team to do in-house M&A and Strategy

How would such a CV appeal to recruiters and what type of exit opportunities could I possibly have?

Would appreciate any opinions regarding the matter.

Thanks!

Option II: 9% preferential return to LPs with 100/0 GP catch-up, 50/50 split thereafter

Make the jump

“What’s the best group on the Street?”

It’s one of the most common questions asked on the WSO forums. Nobody ever has a definitive answer, because there isn’t one. Some folks want to make a career in investment banking, while many other forward-thinking monkeys sign on with an eye already on buyside placement post-analyst program. Assuming you are in the latter bucket, like so many WSO readers are, joining the right group for you is key to getting on the headhunter shortlist come recruiting season.

Here’s how you find the group that will put you on the fast-track to the promised land.

Before you guys start crushing people in the comments section, I encourage you to read through the article and the points it makes. The world really has no idea about private equity. I tried to shed some light on some of the key misconceptions (it's not hard to figure out which commenter was me), but the fact remains that the media will continue to prey on peoples' ignorance.

I'm fed up with the political status quo, but stuff like this still annoys the hell out of me.

Fellow monkeys,

There are a lot of posts that go into great deal describing the analyst-to-associate transition, as well as the exit opps to buyside. My question is, what happens after that? After 10 years in IB/PE/HF, where does one find oneself?

What are people doing in their 30s, 40s and 50s? After they become associates, do they all progress to higher IB levels (VP, MD)? If they are in buyside, do they progress or stay in the same spots?

Hypothetically speaking, a 100-analyst class enters a BB IBD firm. Twenty/thirty years later, what are their positions and jobs?

Thanks..

Fellow Monkeys,

I have a final round with a PE firm that focuses on manufacturing investments. I've investigated all of their portfolio companies and figured out the criteria they really care about when looking at deals, and I feel like I'm generally well prepared for the interview in terms of behavioral questions and the basic technical questions.

I wanted to see if anyone has any advice regarding specific modeling or financial questions to the manufacturing sector that may be asked.

Thanks in advance

So someone I know (through the Internet) claims that he got a PE summer internship at a top firm (Silverlake, KKR, TPG), as a sophomore at Cornell AEM.

He did have a high GPA, and claims it was a summer analyst role and not a support role, that he did not have any connection to the industry, and that he landed this internship in June.

Is this plausible?

I told him that I didn't believe him.
As far as I know, Silverlake only recruits from Wharton and TPG doesn't have analysts, and I'm not sure about KKR.

Guys - I'm at a BB in Lev Fin and recently have been called up for an interview at a credit hedge fund within a private equity fund: focused on distressed debt, special situations, long/short equity, etc.

I've been involved in several PE interviews but never interviewed with a credit hedge fund.

Here are my questions:
(1) What is the scope of the interview and how would it vary from a conventional PE interview (i.e. will they conduct a deep dive into my deals, etc.)?
(2) What sort of market knowlege would I be tested on? Pricing? Indices?
(3) If I get asked to pitch an investment idea, should I present a deep dive into the business (e.g. PE interview format)? If not, what should I hit on?

"Paying for an internship

A friend of mine is currently doing an internship on Wall Street in Private Equity, which he paid for out of his own pocket. At first I was horrified by the notion of paying for work experience but on reflection consider the idea more palatable.

1) You get great experience on your CV
2) To my knowledge actual employers won't know that you paid for it
3) Potential for networking

Anyway, what do the rest of you think?"

Has anybody seen this before? Hahahaha wow, I knew some internships weren't paid, but ACTUALLY you paying the employer?

Hey guys, I'm looking to get into private equity for the long run preferably at a non-public firm e.g. Warburg Pincus, First Reserve etc. I've got an offer to join a bulge bracket IB in M&A as a Summer Analyst. My question is, assuming I have options on the table, is it better to do a few years in bulge bracket M&A and then switch over to Private Equity post-Associate level? or is it better to join a PE firm directly if I get an offer after my Summer Analyst role? By asking which is better I'm referring to their effects in long-run career building.

Hi everyone,

I don't mean to double post, but this post reflects a newfound passion that I feel I'd like to pursue in my career. I am a sophomore and am deciding between a summer sophomore offer at McKinsey in consulting, or a summer at Goldman Sachs in their Sales and Trading division. Both are in New York, and I would love to do both as I loved everyone at each firm and could see myself doing well at both firms for the summer. However, I think my long-term goal is to do Private Equity, and thus IBD would probably be the best preparation, but because I am choosing between these two non-IBD options, I wanted to know which opportunity the forum would find as better preparation, and ultimately-- which would help most in trying to get a job in PE out of school.

A partner at a private equity firm just asked me for 10 "proprietary nontraditional" key performance indicators for the African economy. Think "tonnage of waste per year", stuff like that. Obviously civil unrest is of real significance. Any good ideas on how to translate that into a usable metric? Other ideas for appropriate "nontraditional" kpi's (can be industry and/or country specific)? I was thinking a commodity-linked indicator would be good too given the many countries' heavy weighting of this in their GDP.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I've got to have them to him by tomorrow afternoon and am struggling. Thanks.

Why are exit opps (BB to buy side) so much less hyped in London/ Europe than they are in the US? In London it seems like its very rare for people to leave after 2 years (norm in the US) and many more people stay to become senior bankers.

Is it because there are less buy side exit opps? Is the pay / work differential not so great? Just a culture thing?
