Thoughts on this?

It seems like depending on which news source you're reading, the story is definitely tilted one way or another.

For example, the Daily Beast makes it seem like Michael Bloomberg was directly involved in this alleged scandal, and that he and his constituents were "spying" on Wall Street banks and The Fed.

From a very high-level perspective, it seems to me that the only information that was actually obtained by the Bloomberg reporters was typical log-in statistics, such as times logged on, times a certain function was used, how many help-desk requests were input, etc. I doubt these reporters had in-depth, specific information that could be used for illegal purposes.

Learning to use Bloomberg at B-School

Hi guys…long time reader, first time poster.

I’ll be heading to top 10 US B-School in the fall, coming from a role outside of financial services. I’m interested in finance and hope to transition into the field after graduation.

I know I’ll need to know my way around a Bloomberg on day one of a finance job. It’s a tool I’ve never used before. Do B-schools generally offer training on the tool? Do Bloomberg reps come on campus to give training?

Also, other than Bloomberg, are there any tools I’ll need to know before hitting the workforce (outside of the Office Suite?) Factset? CapIQ? Is training offered on those products?

Twitter on Bloomberg

Last Thursday, Bloomberg announced that it has begun integrating Twitter functionality into its service platform. It filters company and market-centric tweets for its base of over 300,000 subscribers. This came shortly after the SEC provided guidance that would allow for companies to distribute their announcements and press releases through social media websites.

Bloomberg's service is heavily filtered and entirely focused on providing high quality, potentially market moving news to its users. Traditionally, banks and trading houses have restricted use of Twitter at the office for compliance reasons, so this service offers traders and Analysts a means of keeping up with twittersphere without resorting to their phones and without worrying the firm's legal staff.

I think that this goes a long way to confirm what we already know, that Twitter and other social media can move markets. I was curious to get an insider's view of just how important social media is in the trading world, so I reached out to a trader friend of mine for his view. Read on to hear what he had to say...

Ever notice how everyone tries to break complex geo-political issues with huge economic ramifications into one chart? Yeah, it's impossible not to notice it. Anyway, the Atlantic put together one chart to show just how ADD we have really become:

Yes, we really do want everything in one tidy little ball and the financial media is absolutely serving it all up on a silver platter.

Bloomberg Assessment Test (BAT) Prep Courses?

I'll be writing the BAT at my school this Friday, March 15th. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good preparatory resources that may be useful in reviewing/studying for the test. I would have preferred to have left myself more than 4 days but unfortunately, I was busy with other exams. Also, if anyone has other previous experience with the test, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I can't post a link but if the BAT sounds interesting to you Google "Bloomberg Assessment Test" and click the first link for an explanation of what it is.

It is no secret that the sales reps for different databases are cute girls in their 20s. Capital IQ, Bloomberg, and Factset all employ good looking girls to help sell their products to a bunch of overworked and sex deprived wall street nerds. Getting off the subway at 59th in the morning if I see a cute girl on the train I would say there is a 90% chance she's heading into the Bloomberg building. So I would like to open the floor for the debate of which company has the hottest girls. As a side note, what bars do these girls hang out at after work?

Would an WSJ subscription be worth the cost or is reading/watching bloomberg on a daily basis enough to stay up to date on the markets?

I'll keep this short. Currently I'm a sophomore in the process of trying to obtain an equity research internship. I'm getting a few serious looks, but I'm looking for ways to set myself apart. I'm apart of the investment group at my school which gives me access to a bloomberg terminal. Here's my questions: 1) Is it worth putting in extra time to become very familiar with bloomberg? 2) Are there any good guides that I could read to get me started? 3) Do you have any advice you'd like to pass along on your experiences with Bloomberg?

I appreciate the read, and any response.

Hedge Fund Breakfast– Part 1: Bloomberg

Moderator Note (Andy): SenhorFinance is a hedge fund partner based out of Brazil and has worked in basically everything: PE, IB, S&T, management consulting and hedge funds.

IB folks spend some of their evenings in business dinners/drinks, guiltlessly enjoying overpriced food and booze (and depending on local etiquette, drugs and hookers as well). Been there, done that and yeah, it’s lotsafun, because (1) it all runs on expense accounts, (2) it leaves less time for “fuck my life” ruminations and (3) it makes you feel less guilty about skipping gym the morning after.

In HFs, hours are different. For the better, of course. I go home at ~7pm but I can’t party or drink like I used to, because by 8:30am a week’s worth of work must be already done. In this series, I will share my pre-open routine: how I organize myself, what I look for in my screens to generate ideas, what I read. And I call fellow HF/S&T folks to join: how do you prepare for your daily random walk down Wall St.?

Technical/IT Skills on Resume

One question guys,

I see lots of kids here mentioning their IT skills on their resumes.

Now I understand that some of them know bloomberg or capIQ basics, but it is impossible that every single kid here had an access to the Bloomberg or even capIQ (or mergermarket, etc.) or even used them properly and had a "real" training.

Most of them did some random internship positions, its not like im talking about BB summer analysts.

My question - are these skills ever checked during the interview, or they can all just list them and perhaps get an advantage by doing so?

---

*I was personally never asked anything about bloomberg/capIQ during any of my interview, although I had them listed (and had a proper training for both)

So if you found out your coworker was talking shit about you over Bloomberg to other employees in the company in other offices, what would you do? I printed the messages while I am considering what to do, if anything. For the record they're not saying that I'm doing a bad job, more along the lines of personal attacks about my looks and personality. I logged as them a few days ago, with their permission and there were all sorts of messages to coworkers in other offices about me.

1) Confront them privately
2) Confront them in front of your department (embarrass them)
3) Report to manager
4) Report to HR
5) Do Nothing
6) Something else?

My lease is up at the end of the month, and I need to get rid of my bed this weekend. Bought in Sept/Oct 2010 and moved away from NYC after a year and a half. Barely used (worked in banking, so averaged 4-5 hours per night of use).

Pick-up only in SoHo. Again, FREE bed. Just need to get rid of it, and don't want to throw it away. Extremely comfortable plush Simmons BeautyRest.

This is the link to the mattress on Sleepys (it's a different name from last year model when I bought it, but same bed. Standard box spring): http://www.sleepys.com/en/Simmons-Beautyrest-Josly...

Available for pickup Sunday, August 26 or Monday, August 27 before 1:00PM.

PM me if interested, and I will give you the details to come get it.

Big banks and brokers offer a suite of investments to their most valued customers. There seems to be something fundamentally not free markets about having access to deeply discounted investments that would otherwise trade higher in the open market. Take for example Market Linked Step Up Notes.

Market Linked Step Up Notes trade using a set of terms based on some underlying index. I know that super high net worth Merrill clients have access to these things at origination. While the terms can vary, a traditional structure is as follows:

1:1 downside on S&P, 15% gain when the S&P is up between 1% and 15% and 1:1 upside for underlying increases above 15%, 1 year tenor, BAC counterparty (counterparty risk).
