The Psychology of Case Interviews

Consulting is a 'people skills' specialty and Case Interviews, in general, involve 2 humans: Communicating. Interacting. Any ideas on how to increase a candidate's likability to the interviewer? (so he can have an edge over the other candidates)

Pre or post-MBA: Who has more to prove?

Pretty straightforward question that I think might provoke some interesting discussion. At the top consulting firms, who has more to prove: analysts/associates hired straight out of undergrad, or consultants hired out of business school? (For this discussion, let's consider new hires who neither interned nor worked full-time at the firm before business school.)

It seems that at most firms, the A's and C's go through similar training, and in many cases, both share the same consulting inexperience. It seems to me there's more downside risk that A's will say something really stupid in front of a client because of their likely lack of work experience. It also seems less likely that A's would have practical experience or expertise they could immediately contribute to a case team.

Dear all,

I am recently invited to do a powerday at Capital One headquarters in Richmond, VA for their principal operations analyst position. The interview I have is within a week time, so any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

I have taken their online verbal and numerical assessments and passed. But from what I read in the email that the recruiter had sent me, it sounded like I have to take another on site assessment for verbal and numerical on top of the behavioral and case interviews. Is that right?

Hi all,

I'm a junior in college applying to summer programs at consulting firms, and I'm just curious as to how in depth I need to go into in terms of studying for the case. I have "Case in Point" and have glanced at Victor Cheng's website, and was wondering to what extent I need to master the frameworks for summer internship interviews (for undergraduates).

From just glancing at the material it seems like they're targeting more the business school crowd, and I was curious as to the difference between undergrad cases vs. b-school cases. For those who have gone through the recruiting process for summer internships, could you please comment on the difficulty/nature of the cases, as well as what you did in advance to prepare for them?

Thanks!

Last year, as a junior at a target school, I already had an undergraduate research grant lined up for the summer when a few of my friends suggested I apply for some consulting summer internships. I applied at the last minute and did first round interviews at Mck, Bain, BCG. I didn't prepare at all, and they did not go well.

After doing my own research project I realize that academia is not for me. I've gotten much more serious about full time recruiting, have been preparing, practicing cases, etc.. Will they hold my failure against me when I apply start applying this fall?

Ok. So I am getting ready for the fit questions, I have fun having guesstimates at random times in my day, and I know that I have to practice, practice, practice cracking cases.

So far so good. I have several pdfs with dozens of cases on my desktop, and a smart and motivated friends who is willing to practice with me.

What are the best resources to use in preparing for case interviews? I am currently studying the Vault Guide to the Case Interview...is there anything else I should be doing? I am an engineering student with little business background and I am worried about not being prepared enough.

My target firms are: Deloitte, Accenture, ZS Associates, Huron Consulting, Navigant and Bain (a reach). These firms will be conducting on-campus interviews this fall. Does anyone know if there are be case components in these interviews?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
