I've been cold emailing boutique investment banks by putting my cover letter in the body of the email, attaching my resume and finishing by leaving my contact info.

Would it be better to say something along the lines of
Dear XXX

My name is XXX and I am a XXX at YYY majoring in XYZ and am very interested in a career in investment banking. I found your name on the (companies website) and hoped we could set up a time to speak briefly about you job and the industry, so I could gain some insight from your experiece.

then sign it.

Which do you guys think is a better strategy. I have no connection to any of the banks.

Cold calling UK offices from US

I'm a junior with a couple of back office internships and slightly low GPA at an emphatically non-target school. I will be traveling to Europe towards the very end of the summer to take a somewhat relevant class at a well known school.

I'm also in the process of lining up something in town that isn't IBD but is pretty strong and has helped kids place into baking in the past. However, I was thinking about trying to find something in IBD somewhere in the UK prior to the class as I only speak English fluently... obviously London but also open to anywhere.

I've looked around on M&I for general cold calling strategies and found some useful info from an admittedly half-assed search on this site, but I wasn't able to find anything in-depth relating to this topic specifically.

has anyone here landed their summer position by cold calling boutiques? To clarify, I actually mean use the phone rather than email, and have no inside connection to the firm..

For those of you that have had some success in doing this, what do you say on the phone? I'd imagine it would be something like "Hi, my name is X, I'm at student at X, I am interested in summer internships--is your firm currently accepting resumes for summer internships?"

Is this close? What do you actually say on the phone?

Now this is very interesting,

I've had an interview lately and sent a "Thank You" note after it. Got no reply, and of course, its a weekend and I shouldnt expect it.

However, I stumbled upon few free programmes, some of which could do wonders for you...

[quote] They allow users of an almost every major email program in use today -
Outlook, Gmail, Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, Eudora, Thunderbird, Pegasus,
even Hotmail and Yahoo - to create email that gives the sender an
enormous amount of information about the recipient, as they describe
on their site:

* Tracking: find out when email you send gets read, where the
reader is located, how long they read it for, if they printed it out,
whether they forwarded it to someone else, and much more.

Hi,

I was wondering if cold calling IBs between Christmas and New Year would be a good idea?!

My reasoning is as following:
1. because its Christmas I will get redirected to an analyst instantly
2. people are relaxed because they just had Christmas

Is this reasoning correct?

thanks

So no one is returning your sad, sappy, suck up emails? People think you are cold calling for girl scout cookies? Well man the f*ck up and lets trick someone into reading your resume. Don't bother with this unless your resume is stellar, not because it wont work, but because you probably aren't smart enough to get the job anyway. I had a BB MD tell me this while I was doing informational interviews 2 years ago...

How do I cold-call or cold-email someone to get a job in finance?

Generally, cold-emailing works better than cold-calling for securing informational interviews. This is because a clear and concise email can be answered whenever the networking target has the time, whereas a cold-call at the wrong time may annoy a potential contact.

A huge part of this process is targeting people you have some sort of connection to, even if it’s not personal. If you attend the University of Wisconsin and there are three alumni working at JP Morgan’s Investment Bank, start with them. If you served in the Marine Corps and are looking to transition to a position on Wall Street, networking with former service members is a great way to get started.

I've been contacting alumni lately and had a lot of help. I've contacted very few (just started) non-alumns but can't help but feel I'm doing something wrong.

I usually keep my emails shorts. I usually introduce myself, explain my recent experience in 1 sentence and ask if I can speak to them briefly regarding advice and their backgrounds.

What would you guys do or adjust? How do you enthrall non-alumns into talking to you?

I've found scraps of answers in other posts but not a really coherent narrative so far.

With 1 year hf analyst experience I'm looking to move to another HF role and I'm putting together my strategy. Aside from getting contact referrals, my strategy is::

a) gather a list of the funds that meet the broad criteria of what I'm after. I would prefer a role in a small team, perhaps a new fund set up by an experienced PM or something that would allow me to grow with them, but I digress.
b) cold email them cv+inv.ideas and ask for an interview/discussion
or
c) Is contacting headhunters a viable option given that I'm looking for a relatively junior role? Do they actually deal with such roles or only more senior/experienced hires?

How do you guys search for places to cold call/e-mail?

Steno's picture

I'm making a spreadsheet of places for myself and for a couple of classmates of mine containing lists of firms in each city in our state.

I went to google maps and typed in "financial services" and searched for that in whichever city. Also searched for "asset management"/"investment banking". I'd get the names on the little dot and then Google to find their websites/found numbers and add that info to my spreadsheet.

Eventually I'm going to create a web crawler bot to scrape through each website and search for the name of my school so I can find alumni, but I doubt I'll find much (non-target).

Is this the best way to look for places to try and target?

Whether you're trying to land a position, sell a product, or simply network with others, learning the art of selling should be a vital part of your learning in any profession.

The most effective way to do all of the above is to learn the art of selling yourself. While there are many aspects to selling yourself, there are two core skills that all salespeople master.

A) Cold Calling
B) The Face to Face Sale

Cold Calling
Mastering cold calling opens you up to a whole new world. It allows you to efficiently obtain information and move your career forward in an efficient amount of time without having to wait for an email response that may never happen.

I know the obvious answer here is to "cold call more" but I can't even make the first call. Every time I call a firm I get nervous and usually just hang up as soon as the phone gets picked up, or I just stumble through my pitch and just hang up half way through. These are obviously really bad habits and not helping me at all, so what can I do to improve?

So summer recruiting has been ruff for me this year so i'v been cold calling like crazy. I contacted this analyst from a non-target at a small boutique and they told me to send my resume to me and it will be forwarded to MD.

I sent my resume and cover letter and completely messed up, in my cover letter i had multiple typos and also the analyst didn't like the formatting of my resume and cover letter.

Basically 15 min later i got an email telling me all this and saying I can reach out once I fixed the issues but there are no summer positions still available.

Cold Calling- How to get phone numbers?

Hi,

I would like to start cold calling bankers in NYC next week.
Since I understand that it's not appropriate to cold call bankers at big companies, I will be calling smaller asset management, hedge funds and prop-trading companies.
What's the best way to get the phone numbers of bankers at these companies?

I already have a list of about 50-60 companies and I can get names of bankers on Linkedin... the hard part is to get their phone numbers.
I don't think Bloomberg has a lot of the bankers from these smaller companies.

Are you familiar with better databases?

Thanks

Cold calling vs. headhunters

I'm in a niche role within equities at a BB firm and due to issues with my boss, am highly motivated to change jobs. Over the last couple months, I've met several headhunters but find that they basically don't understand my role properly, or just want to extract information from me. I've been to a couple informational interviews arranged by these people, but they were not with the right hiring manager or with firms I am particularly interested in. After wasting a lot of time, I'm inclined to just contact prospective hiring managers directly (through Bloomberg or email), but at the same time I'm worried about burning an opportunity at a target firm through an inappropriate approach, or word getting around that i'm an active job seeker. Any advice on the way to go about this?

How to Cold Call your way to an internship

WSO has truly been a huge help in my search for internships, so I figured I would discuss how I landed a decent SA position at a sophomore from a non-target. I wound up at a smaller MM Bank (about 50 or so senior bankers in 4 offices) in DC.

The first step is to figure out your elevator speech, in 30 seconds or less explain why you want to be a banker, address your nontraditional background and the like. Once you have this read you are set to start preparing to cold call.

The second step is do research, google and google maps are your friend. Use targeted search terms like "New York City Middle Market Investment Bank" and start making a list of places, contacts and names. Look through Linkedin to see if alumni or friends have wound up at firms you are looking at.

I've been searching for a part-time position for when I head back to school in September. Ideally, it would be with a boutique and about 15-20hrs a week. To date, I have held 2 good internships with a BB, however, neither have been in even remotely relevant roles.

I networked my way into an interview with a boutique that has small teams involved in IBD, ER, and S+T. Their primary revenue generation is through advisory services to European hedge funds. Following the interview, I sent my thank-you note and references. The response I received from them was "Thanks for meeting with us. We are in the midst of full-time hiring right now, so get back to us in August in regards to a part-time position." I followed up with them yesterday.

Basically,

I cold called the shit out of my contacts, linkedin, whatever. I have about 3 calls a day on average for a week next week.

Problem: A lot of them are in non ibanking fields and even they say "we usually take juniors...its great that you are starting early though! Here is a cookie!" (IAMA sophomore btws..) Even smaller shops seem to want juniors.

What do you think I should do to steer these conversations better? Demand to speak with an MD or VP? Currently, I speak with analysts mostly. They like me it seems (no homo) and I have a high GPA.

Thanks ya'll.

I am going to speak with an analyst at a reputable, regional, boutique tomorrow afternoon. To ensure that the call isn't a fiasco (as my last one was), I have some general questions that I would really appreciate help on:

1. Should I be the one to end the conversation? Serious question. If we have been talking for 10-15 minutes, should I end the conversation or keep firing questions until he decides to hang up?

2. Is it fair to ask if he can refer me to other analysts/associates he works with? I figure the more people I know at the firm, the better my chances of getting an interview/job.

3. Who should be asking the questions primarily? My last networking call essentially became a mini-interview, but I wasn't expecting the caliber of questions.

Hey fellas,

so like many of you I'm a fresh undergrad still seeking full time employment. I have some experience as I interned for a boutique this past semester where I did some equity research. However, my aspirations are to work in Asset Management. I compiled a list of Asset Management firms in the local NYC area and I plan to cold call.

However, I'm not sure how to. I need some guidance on what approach to take when I do cold call these firms. What type of introduction statement should I say and how should I parlay my experience?

thank you in advance guys

For small, local firms:

How do you properly inquire for a position out of undergrad over the phone?

Is it recommended to beat around the bush and ask to speak with someone over coffee, then segue into asking for a position?

But if we're graduating soon, do we just ask directly?
ex: I'm an undergrad seeking an entry / pre-MBA position...I'd like to submit my resume...

Hey guys

so I've been looking for a FT job and found nothing due to lack of experience. I recently began an unpaid internship at a boutique firm in NYC. I'm doing mostly grunt work but I am learning a little bit and mostly I've helped out with stock research. I am hoping to help with the actual deal making soon.

I was wondering, what do you guys think of actually cold calling BBs?
Some BBs have some new jobs posted because of the improving economy jobs are being added here and there.

If I was to cold call say the Investment Banking division of BAML how would the process go?
If there any guys out there that actually did this any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for the responses.

I am current a senior from a non-target. My GPA is 3.6 and finance major GPA is 4.0. I had internship with UBS in its Wealth Management Division. I have a few questions about cold calling. I am trying to obtain an analyst position at a boutique.

Is it too late for me to get a job from a boutiques firm at this point?

Should I cold email before I make the cold calls?

What's a good time(morning, afternoon, evening) to cold call MDs from those small firms.

My name is .... I am currently a senior at ... University.
I interned at UBS Wealth Management division previously. I am looking to get into investment banking.

Since I am not from a target school, is it better not to mention the name of my school when I engage the conversation?

Now I am wondering what exactly I should say during my call with them to help me land an interview. In my email I told them I wanted to talk about he industry, so I will obviously do that but how should I bring up the topic of my resume/asking for an interview and should I bring this up in the call itself or in the follow up email?

I would really appreciate any help.

Had a few questions regarding cold calling/emailing for FT positions. For cold-emailing, do you guys usually email MD-level or analyst level at small shops? Additionally, do you include your resume with first email and just flat out say you are looking for a FT time and would appreciate the consideration? Or do you just send a I'm interested in investment banking, I'd like to hear about your experiences then slowly working your way into interviewing for a FT job?

For cold-calling, do you guys traditionally call the office line or MD line or how exactly do you approach that?

If anyone could provide some specifics about how they went about the process it'd be extremely helpful.

Thanks
