No, it's not another "WSO, we need to have a talk" thread -- this one is about kids who are in their first or second year of college. Of course, if you're already reading this (and are, by extension, on WSO), we don't really need to have a talk, but it's time that someone had a talk with everyone else out there who is about to make the biggest, and possibly costliest, mistake of their life.

You will have trouble making money as a liberal arts major. There, I said it. No, no one in the college advising office will tell you this, and yes, they do claim to somehow have your best interest at heart.

Attitude Towards Individual Plans of Study Major

Hello all,

I am curious as to what the opinion is on individual courses of study. Say if I were to create a Government and Economy curriculum, or something along those lines.

Is there a consensus? Does it just not happen?

Not majoring in Econ- top schools

At top schools (think ivy's, duke,etc...) where there is no undergrad b-school, is it necessary to major in Econ? I know there is already a lot of posts about this subject, and it really doesn't matter what you major in as long as you show interest and have a high GPA, but it seems like the only other relevant major is Math. I am interested in Econ but not enough to major in it, possibly minor in it. But will a major in Math brand me as more of a quant, or better suited for s&t? I want to do IB, but what other options are there? (Let's just assume it's Duke).

"I wanna study art, the only kind they got is liberal" is a line from one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite rappers whom you've probably never heard of. Obscurity aside, today I'm going to talk about something reasonably controversial: the liberal arts and their place, if any, in finance.

This article was inspired by a few discussions with my co-workers, and even though I was _planning_ on talking about resumes today, I'm gonna hold that off until Wednesday morning because I really wanted to write a piece on this topic. Don't be cross with me, WSO.

I majored in a liberal arts discipline...sort of. Political Science is technically in the social sciences, but Political Theory (i.e. not how Congress works, but what Rousseau and Locke had to say) is more in the realm of political philosophy, and thus, the liberal arts. Of all the classes I took in Political Science, one (of 14) was an applied class about the political realm with respect to international trade. The remaining 13 were very soft, and have been dubbed by many to be "useless".

I am an undergraduate student aspiring to do IBD. But I am really confused about which major should choose. A lot of people tell me finance or accounting more fit in I-banking. But some people tell me finance and economics are the same. I am really in a dilemma. Help me!

Math&Econ vs. Finance for Trading

Sorry if this question has come up a bit, but I'm at an important point in my development where I'm applying to target schools to get better recruitment. My heart is in trading. I feel that mathematics and economics relate to trading and/or quant roles more than any business major. And they are also extremely interesting to me.

Am I correct in my beliefs? It will also be much easier to transfer into targets as Math/Econ vs. transferring into top undergrad b-schools

Real important to me right now, as app deadlines are within the next 2 weeks. Thanks in advance fellas

Penn International Rel. change to Econ, worth the GPA hit?

I know this course is generally covered in past topics, and I have read many threads that are kind of similar. But I figured my situation is slightly different given my below avg. liberal arts GPA, rising senior status, and no business experience.

So, quick bits of info.
3.5 International Relations major at Penn
Econ minor
Rising senior
business frat but no other relevant extracurricular involvement
looking to intern at a small firm this summer

Is it worth it for me to switch my major to full Econ and sacrifice my GPA? (It would probably dip to 3.3 due to Econometrics and etc..) I would also probably have to stay an extra year then since I am a transfer too. I am thinking of Econ because I know a few Poli. Sci and Intl. Rel. without a legit business job lined up...

Retake classes or add econ minor?

I'm a junior at a non-target. I am wondering whether it would be more beneficial to add an econ minor or to retake some classes that I did poorly in and raise my GPA.

Possibly of interest:
I'm pretty sure I'll end up doing an MSF

My GPA is currently a 3.55. I would retake two classes that I got a B and a C in. Provided I got A's, my GPA would go up to 3.72 and I'd easily be able to keep it around 3.7-3.8 by graduation.

The econ minor requires two more classes; I'm not going to both add the minor and retake the classes because I'm on pace to leave a semester early and I'd like to save the money.

Any opinions? Leaning towards retaking the classes at this point.

Hi I am a High School Senior who is interested in ibanking. I struggle very much with standardized tests which will most likely keep me out of a top 30 school. I was wondering which schools in the midwest outside of the top 30 could eventually lead me into an ibanking career? Also what are the best majors to take when trying to break into ibanking from a non-target?

Recommend a Major for me Please

I'm still choosing between schools but its likely I'll go to a non-target (UW). It's ranked like 6 for CS and I got into CS so it will be my primary major. But would you guys recommend Math as a second major or Econ. CS/Math may be a little too nerdy for my taste while CS/Econ sounds cooler. Math seems more useful though since Econ can often be a biased joke of a degree.

Note: I may apply for financial engineering programs or try to get a job in HF after business school since it's unlikely I'll get fantastic finance offers after undergrad.

One major or double major?

 on 2/22/11 at 11:26pm

I am deciding whether or not to pursue the finance/accounting double major or just stick with accounting or finance as a major, and I need to know what would be most beneficial for me in terms of investment banking recruiting. I feel that I can get a 3.80+ in either or both majors, but my school is a non target and our finance program is weak in comparison to accounting so I feel like the double major would be good because I really like finance. I know this has been debated in the past but I would like some advice in our regards to my situation.

Thanks.

And to clarify, in the long run I'd like to attend a top 20 MBA school and then work at a hedge fund post MBA

Hey! Quick question about consulting:

Hey everyone. Quick question:

I'm a junior at a target school, double major in poli-sci/history. I want to go into consulting; I have a 3.4 GPA. however, I have a resume full of public service paid work experience (US Senate, Worked for the mayor, worked for the school board, worked for a non-profit. this is all while in college - I've consistently worked about 25 hrs/wk on top of 2 leadership positions in extracurriculars (VP of fraternity, VP of a student club) and a full college courseload.

Now, you might be thinking, "why go into consulting, why not work for the government?", well my last government internship (US Senate) absolutely sucked (sorted mail for 40 hrs/wk for three months) and totally turned me off of working for the gov't.

Easy...easy...put your proton blaster away and resume buyside fantasy of choice. All I want to say is that finance (perhaps) may no longer be the optimal major for breaking into...finance. Though the logic may counter conventional reason, so does an eternity of 0% interest rates and Monopoly monetary policy.

As the world changes, so does industry and finance is no different. Looking at a recent Top 10 majors list , finance is nowhere to be found.
