Hey guys,

A friend of mine just got an offer from here for the summer. Does anyone now about the firm and how an internship at this company would help for FT recruiting?

Thanks,

Fixed Income Trading Rankings by Revenue for Q1

It is relevant to look at fixed income trading revenues thus far for the banks that have reported...

Curious to see what people think in terms of this.

For Q1:
1. JP Morgan, Revenue: 4.75 Billion, Down 5% YoY
2. Citigroup, Revenue: 4.62 Billion, Down 3% YoY
3. BofA, Revenue: 3.3 Billion, Down 20% YoY
4. Goldman Revenue: 3.26 Billion, Down 9% YoY
5.Morgan St. Revenue: 1.5 Billion, Down 42% YoY

Q1 Euro Banks (2012)
Deutsche Bank: 3.4 Bln Euros (so 4.42 Billion)
Barclays : 2.4 Bln Pounds (so 3.6 Billion)

Clearly JP has been the fixed income leader now for ahwile, but interesting to see the strength at Citi. Clearly seems you want to avoid MS for fixed income if you can choose between firms.

Hi all,

Have an interview at a fixed income firm on monday. Any suggestions on general concepts and readings that are must-knows? Have been working with equity-related products for a while but haven't really been exposed to the world of rates..

Thanks.

With the Fed buying so much fixed income (e.g. MBS), aren't they going to take a huge loss when interest rates go up, since the value of those bonds will go down? How is the Fed going to deal with that?

I work at a prop shop in fixed income and am looking to make the jump. This is non-algo, non-quant discretionary trading. A few reasons:

- The prop trading approach (day-trading/scalping only) is getting tedious, and there's not enough depth. No exposure to any fixed income derivatives (no options, let alone swap/agency space). Just optimizing an ever-dwindling scalp.

- I fear for the future of non-algo trading. My job might be gobbled up by algos in a few years (months?).

- No surprise here, I'm not killing it. I'm making money, but not enough to sacrifice networking thru clients/exit opps/broader market exposure by staying.

JP Morgan S&T Summer Analyst - Can Anyone Offer Help Choosing Asset Class?

 on 2/25/13 at 7:23pm

Hey everyone.

I recently accepted an offer at J.P. Morgan for the S&T Summer Analyst program. The program is not rotational; we rank our choices and they rank us.

I have recently seen seen the FICC Citi Survey (can't link to it as I am a new member), but understand that this chart is a bit old (2009).

Right now I am leaning towards Commodities. What else should I be looking at? Last summer I was at Citi and got to rotate through Equity Derivatives, Munis, and Mortgages.

How is JP in equities? Is there anyone here that works at JP, is a client, or familiar with the firm that could offer some insight?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am meeting with a director of energy bond trading. My experience is in pure energy so wondering what kind of questions should I ask him. I know I can ask few questions regarding depressed natural gas and power prices and its effect on companies cash flow and bonds ratings.

Also what are good websites for bond research?

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

I am a CFA Level 3 candidate and have been a finance professional for the last 4.5 years, though most of the work I've done is in a Financial Back office. My future aspirations include working in Investment Management, but I'm more intrigued by the world of Fixed Income and Structured Products.

I had the following questions,
1. How would an MBA help me in an Asset Management role?
2. Which are the B Schools that are considered good for getting into an Investment Management type of role?
3. What kind of roles in Investment Management (or Fixed Income Management) can one look at after an MBA+CFA?

I know that prior experience counts, but thats the reason I want to use an MBA to make a transition in my financial career.

Hope to find some helpful suggestions :)

With recruiting picking up into full steam for a lot of juniors, I would really appreciate if some of the more experienced monkeys on WSO could lend an opinion on where they believe the bond markets are headed in 2013. Having an opinion on equity markets is one thing, but I personally don't have much more of an opinion on the bond markets other than knowing that Banker Ben plans to keep rates down through 2014.

Would appreciate to hear the insight of some of the senior folks. If there are specific sources apart from news publications with commentary on the bond markets it would be great if those were referenced.

Thanks.

Hi I have a first round interview for TD's NYC office. I am struggling to find any solid info about their NYC office and would really like to know which products this office deals with so I don't sound dumb when they ask what desk I want to work on, I give an answer, and then they don't have that desk in the office. Granted this is just a first round so I doubt the questions will be that specific but any help would be appreciated.

What does the fixed income department actually do and why has it been so unprofitable? Do they just trade bonds? Curious why UBS has to resort to winding down the business and why other banks don't have that problem.

I have an interview with a rival bank in a strategy department, and I just want to understand the different business lines. Thanks.

why does someone actually make a career in fixed income or even invest in fixed income products when you get a similar ROI by just using fixed deposits? What exactly does a fixed income fund manager provide his investors which make them come to her/him instead of going for fixed deposits?

I am not familiar with how the fixed income stuff works. please help.

Can anyone provide info on Jefferies' Fixed Income department? I'm currently a junior and through some connections I think that I may have a good shot at an internship there, but I wanna know how it compares to BBs. Is it comparable to Morgan Stanley FI? Or a smaller JPM/DB/GS? Or worse than both groups? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Since it's a much smaller bank, I've had a lot of trouble finding information on the department.

The Big Short, what an awesome book that was! It gave insights into the crash that I have never realized before, and would have never came to learn in school either. The book informed me that equity traders are looked down upon compared to fixed income traders, according to the author. The author explained of the massive size and volume of fixed income markets compared to equity markets. He also explained of the larger spreads and ability for fixed income to be bundled into the new (and largely misunderstood) pools of debt obligations.

So where does the belief that equity traders are less than fixed income traders stem from? Are fixed income traders truly greater than equity traders? Do they have higher incomes perhaps?
