M&I vs WSO Guides

I checked out both - WSO's new version is more comprehensive that the older version, but M&I is just nuts. M&I has a lot more questions and covers a pretty wide spectrum of materials. So my question is - is WSO not sufficient or is M&I going overboard?

So after reading a lot of stuff this summer, I found bankonbanking.com. The guy who ran the site actually gave a lot of helpful tips on WSO as well.

But I found that his posts on his websites filled some unanswered topics that are not on M&I. They are also more in depth than the advice given on WSO for some other topics.

Anybody know where the site went? I know it went inactive after a year or two, but it was still online until i checked today...

Really hoping to at least save some of the helpful advice on there. Anyone saved any of it?

Can someone send the link to the page where you can buy the M&I 101 guide that is oft-discussed here? I didn't see on the site. I'm assuming this is different from the BIWS guide (which is advertised on the M&I site). Thanks!

Hey monkeys,

I'm sure some of you have seen the new investment banking interview guide (version 3.0) that M&I released last week. It's currently on sale for 30% off, and I'm considering purchasing it (even though I have already purchased the WSO and Vault guides).

I was hoping to hear some thoughts from anybody who has already purchased this guide, plans on purchasing this guide, or has used an M&I guide in the past.

What do you guys think? Is it a worthy investment for a student rapidly approaching recruiting season?

Thank you for any thoughts.

So you are fascinated by the financial markets and maybe even interested in trading? Great, but access to information doesn't come cheap and can be a real differentiator. After all, how can you possibly get an edge on what is going on if you don't even have a fraction of the information at your disposal that market professionals have without paying a pretty penny?

Ten or Fifteen years ago it would have been nearly impossible to come even close to replicating what big firms have access to when it comes to data and information. These days, you still can't get there, but you can arguably get three quarters there in terms of what the fundamental managers are looking at.

I will go into detail below. Let me know if you have any cool free resources or tricks to getting useful market information.

So, I recently got the WSO Business School Bible, and after making it through the 520-page book this week, I am honestly surprised to say how good it was. I have never used any of the WSO guides (mainly because they did not exist when I was doing banking interviews), but I can say that this one is good and definitely got me in the right state of mind to start the next phase of the b-school application process (which, if you read my last post, kicked off late last week: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/b-school-appli...).

So without further ado, here is my review of the WSO Business School Bible:

Thanks!

Hey monkeys,

Hoping someone could help me out here with a link.

There was a free guide to IB that I read approximately 2 years ago. Trying to find it again because I remember it distinguished specifics between arms of IB really well. 20+ google searches later and have nothing to show for it!

Here's what I remember:

- The author wrote it for his younger brother who was thinking about IB but had no idea what it really was. Language was brutally honest layman terms.
- Plain looking .pdf document. Black text on white background. No fancy pictures or charts. Just straight-up text.
- I believe it also had interview tips and 'day-in-the-life of X' sections. But the key section of the guide that I remember was distinguishing between M&A, S&T, research, etc.

I have a very detailed outline that I'm going to make available to the forum. Either through a editable gdoc or through a personal wiki. Frankly, we all spend way too much time studying / preparing for the exact same things.

I'm hoping that a few people will taking it upon themselves to improve upon this outline as they study.

I'll post the links later today (whichever route I decide). Email me for edit permission.

On the web page for the internship guide, it says: "You’ve already gotten the internship. Why not spend $9.99 to make sure you can make the most of it? This guide will help you learn what you need to do to get that full-time offer, and have a great time doing it!" when *i think* it should say $19.99.

Nothing too big, just pointing it out.

Since everyone else seems to be jumping on the band wagon, I thought it was about time Gekko started posting a few blog topics. Considering it’s about that time of year, I figured a post about “Gekko’s Guide to interviewing” would be helpful to all the new monkeys out there looking for their first internships.

Just wondering which guide provides the best information on the top schools, their strengths and weaknesses, and what it takes to get into them. I'm considering Alex Chu's MBA Field Guide, Stacy Blackman's MBA Application Roadmap, and Richard Montauk's How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs.

Yes, I used the search and was not able to find anything.

WSO Behavioral Interview Guide

This 40+ page guide is a compilation of almost 100 of the most common behavioral / fit questions encountered in Wall Street interviews with detailed advice and examples. This guide was created to provide prospective financiers a quick review for a fraction of the price of other interview guides. This is an electronic pdf so you get everything immediately and can start studying right away.

Fit questions are part of almost every finance interview. There are certain questions you can always expect to get but often candidates are unsure of how to best approach them. In this guide not only do we give you specific guidance but we even provide examples. In this difficult market and competitive industry it is important to gain any edge you can. If you put in the time to review, this guide will give you that edge.

We've priced the Behavioral Guide so low because WSO is a community where information has always been free to our members. While $9 is not free, we think you'll agree (if you do your research on other guides) that it is an incredible deal for such an extensive compilation of fit questions, advice and samples that other guides may not provide.

Types of questions that are included in this guide:

  1. The One Question You WILL Get In Your Interview
  2. Industry
  3. About You
  4. Situational
  5. Tricky
  6. Other

Good luck and please let us know if you have any suggestions for improving the Behavioral Guide by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

Technical questions are part of almost every finance interview. While the level of difficulty of these questions vary from firm to firm, you will undoubtedly be quizzed on technical questions in at least one of the rounds. Detailed and accurate responses will more likely “wow” your interviewer and help you land the job.

Testimonials:

"Just got the new technical guide. By far much better than vault. Very detailed (80+ pages) with charts, graphs, etc. I'll be reading this at least once this summer in prepping for fall interviews. For $20 this is definitely the best deal out there." - banker88

"Just bought the guide, and I can say that it really goes into a lot of detail to introduce and expand on certain concepts." - Sisak

"I bought the Vault guide and there is a lot of fluff, this guide is straight to the point. Question, explanation, sample response. It was amazing. Going into my interviews and superdays, I almost never got a single question that I hadn't seen before, or wasn't able to work my way through." - Scott M.

“The new Wall Street Oasis Technical Guide provides questions and easy to understand answers for all the questions I typically ask when interviewing a candidate. The additional questions expand the guide, and the new charts are an added bonus for easily remembering the crucial concepts. If a student really knows all the questions in this guide, they are sure to nail the technical section of their interview.” -Vice President, Goldman Sachs, Sales and Trading

"I bought it as well! Pretty awesome simple format...walks you through the answers and then gives you an example of what exactly what to say in an interview. Breaks it down from beginner to intermediate to advanced questions for Banking and S&T." - slkyswtbllr05

"I'd like to thank you - I just bought the interview guide and it's absolutely amazing." - Goon

"The book is fantastic! It's got the questions and answers that you need to know. It also has a very easy to use format..." - Kaba Modern

"Thumbs up on technical interview guide. It was definitely helpful." - Jamie Dimon (WSO username, not the actual Jamie Dimon)

“This guide is a great resource for anyone going into finance interviews. The questions in this guide helped me successfully land the full-time job I have today! I can honestly say after preparing the questions in this guide I almost never received a question I hadn’t seen before or wasn’t ready to answer due to the suggestions the WSO guide provided.” –1st Year Analyst, Goldman Sachs, Sales and Trading

"Just got the technical guide today. Nice breakdown of beginner/intermediate/advanced questions depending on your background." - Mez

"I didn't read Wall Street Oasis Technical and Behavioral Interview guides until after my first year in my MBA program, and frankly they contained everything I had spent the last year learning to get a job on the Street. I highly recommend them to anyone preparing for an interview, finance or other. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than an MBA (not to mention faster and more to the point)." - MIT Sloan MBA, Class of 2009

"The technical guide is great. Detailed." - Fudbox

"I have found the guides to be very thorough and highly relevant for individuals looking to prepare for interviews and internships." - Junkbondswap

"I have purchased the Technical, Behavioral and Networking guides. All of them are great! I bought the Vault guides for $25 or $30 or whatever, but I think these guides are actually better." - NewIBHire27
