How does the latter affect the former? Relatives and friends tell me most people get their incomes taxed 30% as a generalization. Do you analysts only take home roughly ~70% of your all-in comp?

Are they ways around this being the shrewd, savvy bankers you are?

So I had an interview last week and was told I should hear something by end of last week, yet I haven't heard anything. I was wondering would it be a good idea to call to follow and see whats going on? The interview happened a week ago, I don't want to seem annoying, but I do want to be proactive.

Any advice?

Thanks

Hey all,

I wanted to see what insights people had regarding office politics in different industries, namely IBD/finance vs. Consulting vs. F500. Why does it seem politics in consulting are a lot less than the other two?

Why does it also seem F500 positions suffer the most from office politics and "fitting in"? Is this true?

Is there any industry/job function where promotion and recognition is truly based on merit (while also valuing being a good person and some social skills)?

Thoughts everybody?

Where do i even start..I learned so much from this forum. The brutally honest opinions, sincere willingness to help, the technical information and random tips on everything has been absolutely crucial for me landing this offer.

Coming from a non-target I didnt get that 3rd year SA position at a BB. Matter of fact, I spent my 3rd year summer working at my school. It's hard getting an SA position anywhere so congrats to the people that got it!

After my 3rd year I took a year off to get some real work experience b/c I know how hard it is to find a job without any work experience in this economy. After 200 applications and 14 failed interviews I landed an offer as an intern at a large pension fund in Canada but it was back office. Good intro, good company but it wasnt what I wanted to do. So I started applying again, like crazy. Applied at every BB, as many boutiques I knew, pretty much googled a list of Boutiques in North America and cold emailed all of them or went on their websites individually to apply for their internships.

Out of all of them I got one interview at a boutique..

Hey guys,

I'm a rising junior at a top non-ivy where wall street recruits fairly heavily, and am sure that I want to do ibd after college. I have a solid gpa (close to 3.8) as an econ major, and have interned at two smaller m&a boutiques in the south (am currently in the process of one). What would you recommend doing in the next six months to best position myself for an internship at a top group after my junior year? I follow the market news pretty regularly and have been reading a lot of finance related books lately, but what materials are best to ensure I nail the interviews (if I get them..)

thanks

Obviously we all know investment banking is a very selective field to get into, but I'd love answers on why they seek the kids from the most elite schools, and what intellectual horsepower does the job really need, vs. trading, etc. Is it more the work ethic and well adjustedness they seek in that field, or do you really need to be the kid who was in science research in high school and won prizes?

I am curious about which one is better. I'm a first generation for college and I can't decide whether I should go to a target like Ross and end up with a 3.2 GPA or go to an easier college like OSU and get a 3.8/4.0 GPA. My goal isn't necessarily to get an IBD position straight out of undegrad (though, that would be perfect), but to go to a top business school (M7) and go from there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, how is Indiana Uni's Kelley school of business?

I just finished my freshman year at U of M in LSA. I applied to the business school and will hear whether or not I get in in around a month. I had a 4.0, but my extracurriculars and essays might be a little weak. It seems as though the last few years Ross admissions has been very essay/EC weighted. Anyways, if I were to get rejected from Ross and major in Econ, do you think that I could still land a job in IBD? I hope to be able to keep my grades up and graduate with a 3.85 or higher.

I'm about to do an SA IBD stint, but after reading more into banking, S&T sounds way more interesting to me. I'd also be interested in ending up at a HF.

Is it at all common to go from IBD to S&T (at the same bank)? Obviously there aren't a lot of transferable skills, but if I do well in my IBD internship and request to transfer to S&T could it happen? It's not like I'm trying to transfer from the BO, so I feel like maybe it can be done?

Unfortunately, the BAML helpdesk could not give me specific information.

Commercial Real Estate Agent (Commission based) VS unpaid IBD internship?

Will any of these jobs kill my resume?

I graduated from a target school in December and have been doing a low paying IBD internship... the company is about to go under and I'm looking for something temporary until I find a full-time job.

Is it better to have a "sexy" unpaid internship or a less "sexy" commission based job?

I feel like IBD will add more value to my resume but I think being an unpaid intern is a very negative thing and hiring managers don't like it when somebody who already graduated does unpaid jobs...

Any advantages to networking with an Analyst?

Is there generally any advantages to networking with Analysts? The only advantage I see is if you hit it off with them, they can refer you to an Associate, VP, or MD. So, essentially, to work your way up the ladder.

I know at smaller boutiques, Analysts are the ones that review resumes and make the shortlist, but is it the same at BB's as well?

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and God Bless!

Infrastructure Private Equity Fund to Corporate Private Equity

Hi, I am a PE associate in a decent infrastructure private equity fund (decent brand name) looking at infrastructure equity investments: toll roads, concession assets, power networks, telco towers and more recently at real estate and public private partnerships (PPP).

How easy would it be for me to move to a corporate private equity fund to focus media, technology, consumer, retail, industrial companies?

I am so bored with the boring infrastructure assets, especially those PPP are killing me and everything is regulated and so incredibly boring...! In addition there is no focus on operations whatsoever as one would do in corporate private equity (improve costs, grow revenues etc).

Anybody made the move before?

Any advice from those in IB or those who have gone through SA recruiting would be greatly appreciated, as my goal is to leverage this summer's position in SA (IBD) interviews next year. The positions are listed below:

1.) Boutique IB: 5-10 headcount, mostly debt and equity raises for the lower-middle market
- Position entails due diligence and company research for prospective transactions, NO modeling/valuation
- Disadvantages: No modeling/valuation or financial analysis

2.) Valuation Shop: provides valuation services and advisory for M&A
- Position entails a lot of valuation experience and modeling, training provided

Anyway, I feel its time to pay-it-foward a little bit, with any advice I can give. I like to give advice (realizing my advice is might be shit) and mentor the junior guys I work with.

I currently work in a MM shop. Non a boutique, but not too far up the league tables. I'm happy to answer any questions that I can about the job, the lifestyle, the realities (good and bad), etc.

I've recently came across this newly published APAC IBD compensation report from a headhunter and feel it may be helpful to fellow Asia-based members here. Summary below and also attached the full report for everyone's reference. One thing to note is that the numbers here are very skewed towards the pay in Hong Kong. Hope you guys will find it helpful!

Junior MD: 600k – 1.25m (1.9m*)
ED / Director: 450k – 850k (1m*)

I have completed the BIWS Networking Toolkit, so I have been reviewing that, and I plan to get as many business cards as I can, and try to build friendships, which I obviously want to use to obtain an internship hopefully my sophomore summer.

Does anyone have any advice I can use in building these friendships, if so, can you please help me out?

Thank you in advance for your help!

I have been offered an internship at the United States Treasury. I am currently a freshman, and I attend a non-target university (fucked around too much in high school). My current GPA is 3.823 (not the best, I know), and I am going try and bring it up to like 3.9+. Also, I am involved in Honor Societies on campus, the investment club (this is stupid as hell, though), and other clubs that match my interests.

Also, what GPA should I shoot for, especially since I am at a non-target school? (I know many will say "as high as possible", but if someone can give me a number that would be very helpful)
