IB started by Bourkoff and Stenzler less than a year ago. Does anyone have any intel on how big their groups are (both advisory side and investment side)?

Also, any ideas on pay, culture, exit opps (probably too early to tell), and dealflow?

Thanks.

How do BB bank layoffs logistically work?

I'm not asking what a layoff is but how soon till you find out your in the group to get axed.

Ex. Bank XYZ says they will layoff ~1000 ppl in IB.

How long does it take for a person or specific group to find out they are on the chopping block? Most firms have different groupings/divisions under their umbrella terms for IB, S&T, Corporate, etc.

Do employees that are part of the cutback group generally find out same day, few weeks, months?

What about when a firm says something like they expect to cut x amount of employees over a year or 2? Generally, how much clarity is disipated?

I've been unsuccessful trying to find a resource that gives me a formula for how to find bell curve distribution % in excel (using normdist formula or others that are more applicable) to spread costs. I am trying to make it dynamic based on whatever assumptions we use for the construction period.

Any help will be appreciated.

I (we) are trying to acquire a greater percentage stake in a formerly public company. We currently have a significant control position, but would like to sell the company and require over 90% equity stake to not have to deal with sign-offs from the many disparate shareholders. There are no significant (i.e. greater than .2%) shareholders remaining EXCEPT for "Cede & Co. Depository Trust", which holds around 10%. As far as I can tell, "Cede & Co. Depository Trust" simply represents shares held in street name. My question then is how to track down where these shares are held to potentially acquire the shares we need to get over the 90% equity threshold.

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and recently took interest in the investment banking industry. However, I attend UCSB and our resources are limited but apparently successful in connecting students with alumni within the industry.

I am a first year student and I like to think I have a solid resume; I helped start a construction business with my father, marketing internship with my schools athletics department (6 months ~ 4 hours a week), and managed to land an internship with PwC for this summer. However, last quarter was a pain in the a** and my GPA dropped to a 3.02, which is obviously low for investment banking.

What do you guys suggest and think about my first year accomplishments? Are they common? Off to a good start? Need to step it up (obviously for the GPA section)?

Investment Banking - Analyst to Associate (A2A)

IB1's picture

 on 5/6/13 at 5:35pm

Disclaimer to start: Yes, I've tried using the search function but nothing good / recent on this topic.

Can anyone who has done this / will be doing this give reasons on why they chose to do it?

I'm currently an Analyst at a middle-tier BB, our group does not send people to megafunds or MM shops even, basically take what you get around here.

My rationale: Why go to some <$1bn fund and look at companies in some boring industry (industrials, oil&gas, etc.) when I can stick it out in banking / upgrade banks even and move on through to MD.

So current plan is to grind it out in IB.

Anyone have input on if this will be a decision I regret 5 - 10 years from now?

Thanks

Article about how U.S. IBs are dominating right now. Could have been much more informative and dug a bit deeper, but still relevant.

[quote]Despite regulatory pressure and the general negative public stigma, big banks are getting still bigger, and big American banks are doing even better against their global competitors.
The latest evidence of reasons not to feel sorry for large financial institutions comes from what they're doing on the investment banking side.
As a share of the global total, U.S. institutions have the largest slice of that business in 11 years, according to the latest data from Dealogic.

I'm currently a 2nd year IB analyst at a non-GS/JPM/MS/elite boutique firm, and spent ~1.5 year in a Big 4 audit group prior to lateraling into IB. I intend on staying for a 3rd year analyst position in the same bank to lengthen my employment history but don't have plans to pursue direct promotion to associate. After my 3rd year, my options are to move to another company (be it corp dev, strategy, PE) or to go the bschool route at this point.

So currently I am approaching my sophomore summer and I have an internship with a BB in Credit Risk, which I know is generally considered an MO role. However, I want to go into IBD rather than Credit Risk.

My question is, would a sophomore doing credit risk look good during my search for an internship during the summer before my junior year?

Do you guys have any advice on how to move from Credit Risk to IBD?

I'm currently a sophomore at a Canadian target with a boutique mining ib internship and a wealth management internship on my resume. I'll also be spending my summer this year at Deloitte consulting in their S/O practice. However, I will only be able to attain a 3.6 GPA by the end of this year heading into junior recruiting.I would like to know how much of an impact my GPA would have on me getting interviews at BBs and the Canadian big 5s. I understand the GPA requirement is higher in Canada and am worried about my recruitment chances.
Thanks guys.

Gotta make this quick - at work.

After reading the risible, lambaste worthy & somberful post of "biggest life regrets"

http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/the-single-b...

It's evident for MOST of the posters on this forum (whom I'm guessing are <25, 21?) loathe their college decisions, root cause being their high school decisions thus by transitive property loathe high school decisions.

Seems like many people would like a do-over in life because their models & bottles dreams never materialized (or never will). Honestly, thought the posts were hysterical. It seems like it’s too bad that many of you weren’t conceived in Amy Chua’s womb.

Graduating in the fall. Should I stay for another major (Accounting) or go for Ms Finance?

I am graduating in the fall with a BSc in Finance from a non-target, low GPA, 4.0 finance GPA, with school leadership roles, but no relevant IB internships. I have been applying, but it seems my chance of getting an IB analyst job after graduation is slim to none. I will be taking my CFA Level I this December. I am deciding to stay in school longer for
1. another major (Accounting), 2. Masters in Finance.

Can anyone in similar situation or if you're in charge of hiring analysts give your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hello Gentlemen,

I have a dream of getting into Technology Investment Banking in Sillicon Valley/San Fran with hopes of ending up at VC one day...
I just graduated (quarter system) and was not able to secure FT offer yet. I do posses relevant internships spawning tech start-up, summer analyst at small tech IB, start-up PE where I got some transaction experience and a FT sales in retail banking that helped put me trough college.
Can anyone suggest how to build a solid base of knowledge in technology that would separate me from other candidates and help me network? Any other tips or guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I am a sophomore at a semi target w/ 3.7+ wanting to do IB and here's the dilemma I'm in. At the start of this semester I had no offers for summer, I had multiple chances during my first semester but I'm a terrible interviewer and got nada. To give you an idea of my interviewing skills well I had a ib interview, 2 PE, an interview with a boutique PWM and 2 with BB PWM and couldn't get any, a joke right?

However, I got my story down and was able to land a NYMEX internship (business dev) and had verbally accepted the offer. The offer is for part time this semester and full time summer. I was still interviewing after I accepted the offer and actually got a PE internship for this semester.

Any advantages to networking with an Analyst?

Is there generally any advantages to networking with Analysts? The only advantage I see is if you hit it off with them, they can refer you to an Associate, VP, or MD. So, essentially, to work your way up the ladder.

I know at smaller boutiques, Analysts are the ones that review resumes and make the shortlist, but is it the same at BB's as well?

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and God Bless!

I know theres plently of threads regarding background checks. but my situation is a bit unique.

On my resume i put summa cum laude, when i actually received a cum laude.

I graduated a few months ago (Jan 2013), and have found a job at a boutique bank in new york. This bank does a normal bg check (criminal, education, etc.)

The reason i put summa cum laude is because i thought anyone who received an OVERALL 3.8+ GPA receives a summa cum laude.

However, i realized that it requires you to have at least 3.8 in EVERY class (not average) to receive a summa cum laude.

my overall GPA is 3.91, but received a B+ (3.5) in one of my classes, which is why i ended up with a cum laude.

Is this something I should tell HR immediately?

Thanks in advance !

Hello all.

So rising senior at Cornell Uni here. Short version of story: Transferred in as junior, no prior finance experience (different major and career interests before I transferred). Got four BB interviews, no offers. One MD was kind enough to even tell me, performed well in interview, resume wasn't up to par. (junior doing his first finance gig).

At the moment, I'm reaching out to jobs I come across online outside of my career services (which doesn't really have much else.) Way I see it, I still have till June. A lot of positions are wrapping up and I know it. So doing everything I can right now. Applying to what is left, emailing Cornell alum, and started reaching out to PE/HFs offering to work for free over the summer for the experience.

I think I may have missed the boat for top analyst programs as I am about to graduate college without any internships. Since I am assuming NYC programs are the most difficult to get into (how much easier is it to get into IBD outside NYC?), I might try for banks in different locations because I want to still get the education. My question:do the BB offices in other locations have just as good training program with just less exit opportunities? What about non-BB?

Thanks

It really blows my mind the griping that people do about banking as an analyst. How hard have we worked to get these stupid fucking jobs. People weren't saying "the hours are rough and you'll literally sleep under your desk some nights (which isn't too bad long as bring a decent sleeping bag)," just to try to scare you out of applying. I could maybe see being disillusioned/caught off guard about the job if you're some savant 4.0 triple major from Williams that Goldman swooned out of going to Namibia with the Peace Corp. But other than that, you know what you're getting into, and if you're stupid enough to fake your way into a very serious two year commitment without ACTUALLY wanting to do it, go cry to a wall or some shit.

WHY BOTHER BEING GOOD?

Everyday the newspaper tells the same depressing stories. Youth crime, corporate tax-avoidance, dishonest lawyers, selfish bankers, mass genocide, needless wars, countless violent acts of extreme hatred, rape, oppression and corruption, right down to the cheating footballer’s wife, as told in the lying gossip magazine.

I don’t read the tabloids too much. I’ve come to realise that when people hear over and over, day after day, about bad things, it seems that they start to think that they are justified in being a little less noble themselves. ‘That’s just the world we live in’ – ‘everyone’s taking drugs’, ‘everyone cheats’, ‘everyone gossips’. The media makes celebrities of the worst of us, and subsequently, over time, people feel excused to drift into moral grey areas, asking ‘Why bother being good when everyone else is bad?’. Well if we can’t answer that question, we’re heading for a very dark world indeed, and so that’s the question I want to answer in this article. Why bother being good?
