SA IBD -> S&T?

I'm about to do an SA IBD stint, but after reading more into banking, S&T sounds way more interesting to me. I'd also be interested in ending up at a HF.

Is it at all common to go from IBD to S&T (at the same bank)? Obviously there aren't a lot of transferable skills, but if I do well in my IBD internship and request to transfer to S&T could it happen? It's not like I'm trying to transfer from the BO, so I feel like maybe it can be done?

Which school for S&T?

Hey everyone,

I just got accepted into University of Washington (top 6 for CS, but didn't get direct admit into CS) and University of Waterloo, which I hear places well for S&T in Canada, for Arts and Business Co-op.

I want to remain in the US, but move towards the East. To anyone who knows anything about either or both of these schools, which school is best for S&T, or banking/finance in general? How long would it take me to transfer from Arts & Business into a CS major at Waterloo?

I aim to get a computer science and economics double major.

Thanks!

Mod Note: Lone Wolf is the newest addition to our contributing author team. He is an independent trader/consultant, and has held several different trading positions including floor trader, liability and proprietary trader as well as Head liability trader and market maker. This spans 17 plus years in all of Canada’s major financial hubs.

In the old days, on a regular basis, we used to receive internet touts on pink sheet (should be called brown sheet) “companies”. Spammers would regale us with tales of quick riches, amazing opportunity and boundless moves higher in said stock followed by in one case: you know what that means. your (sic) the tader.

Of course being a “tader” you know exactly what this means: this asshole obviously can’t spell.

The beginning of a trading career often started with some interesting story about some guy not showing up for work, and it was busy, and you were in the gallery….and you got the job. This was common practice on the old trading floors. You never thought much about what it was all about because let’s be honest, a trading floor is exhilarating.

Today the path to trading is much different. Access is easy and wide. Trading costs are low. Information is plentiful and opportunities around the world are accessible. So if you want to become a trader, what can you do?

1) First off, you need to determine if you actually have the stomach for this.

Derivatives Pricing - in S&T?

Hi,
I have a problem finding a department to work in.

I have a double bachelor degree in Mathematics and Economics and now I'm in master in finance program in one of the European universities.

I want to price derivatives but I am not a programmer. I know some VBA but I don't really like programming.

So, I am not a trader or salesperson, quant research is mainly about programming.

How do you think, which department is the best for me?

Maybe risk management, but all these Basels do not attract me at all.

I am trying to decide which way I want to go in my career. One decision factor I have is how my prior work experience will translate into future job prospects after B-School.

In which area of a bank would 5-6 years of experience hold more weight when finding my post B-School job, all else equal?

-Middle Office Trade Support
-Credit Risk
-Market Risk

These are my three options.

Of course there are other factors I am considering, but this is a major one.

I come from a quantitative background and have little finance experience.

Offered a nonfinance internship relevant to ultimate career goal. I was asked to reply in a few days, and I need to apply for summer funding before Feb anyway.

Got an interview but it says its superday is late jan/early feb (either way later than the deadline by which I need to reply to the first one). What should I do? During the interview for the first internship the interviewer said she wanted to make sure I'm definitely coming because she didn't want to hold me a spot (because she's considering my app a few months early anyway) if I'm not coming

Stall the nonfinance internship, ask for an extension ("will almost certainly accept by mid-feb, just wanted to figure out funding & housing before I accept")?

Also, how should I prep for the initial interview? Will it just be fit/behavioral? I don't have a clue what the industry does

How to Leverage ER Experience for S&T?

So I am currently working part-time for a tiny Equity Research company that is close to school and I have upcoming interviews for Sales & Trading. I also have other solid internship experience in Equity Research Sales at a strong MM in New York.

How could I leverage my current ER experience? Are there any specific skill-sets i've acquired that I should really stress in S&T interviews? I have always known I wanted S&T but just wanted to build a strong financial foundation to supplement my studies.

Since all my experience is in Equities, how could I show I am good fit for other securities products? Although it was only Research Sales I still have a solid understanding of how S&T works without having worked on a trading desk.

Cheers!

Is Tulane Worth $120K?

My passion is trading so I'm hoping for a career in S&T. I've been accepted to Tulane with a nice scholarship, but I'll still probably end up with around $120K cost. From what I've found, it seems Tulane places well into Houston energy trading, but does that go for undergrad as well? The other main option is going to state school for very low cost and perhaps transferring. Money IS a factor, but it's not the highest concern.

To simply put it...

My girlfriend and I are graduating this May - She will start FT at JPM S&T and I'll start mine at GS Ops. Indeed, my pride has already been penetrated. I come from a very untraditional background and granted I was a total screw up in high school and college. Only if I were given the chance to go back, I would do everything in the world to change things around. I was very fortunate to even receive a BO offer and will put in all efforts as if my life was on the line to move up.

Physics major breaking in

I'm a sophomore physics major at a Big Ten with finance and math minors. I'm interested in how I might break into financial jobs and away from the sciences. I imagine on paper, I'm best suited for quant type stuff, but honestly I'm more interested in S&T from my limited perspective. Is quant my best bet for breaking in and then moving around from there?

What types of internships should I be looking for this summer (I've applied for a dozen or so finance related so far, but they were just ones my advisors suggested)?

Hey, wanted to reach out and ask whether TCU or Indiana U (not the business school but economics major) is a better option for college. If I went to Indiana I would probably either try for the business school (really competitive) or stay economics and move through with a better GPA and try to get into the Trading workshop. Or I could go to TCU and most likely do much better GPA wise.
I know the placement for Indiana is very good but how is the placement for TCU. I know about Kyle Bass but have there been others that have made it into S&T or Hedge funds succesfully?

Let me know if you know anything about placement as I am having trouble finding any information on this

Financial Engineering
Probability & Stats
Statistical Modeling
Financial Modeling
Differential Equations
Financial Microstructure & Trading Strategies
Stochastic Calculus
Algorithms
Multivariate Analysis & Optimization

I'm trying to narrow it down but most of my courses seem relevant. Which courses on that list should I include? Should I include lower level math like Calc I-III and Lin alg?

S&T to Private Equity Interview Question response

 on 12/8/12 at 6:03pm

Hey Guys,

I have an interview with an organization that places juniors in finance internships. Do you think the following response makes sense..

Interviewer: You mentioned in your application that you would eventually like to get into Private Equity in developing markets in Africa. Why are you pursuing S&T right now instead of IB or Equity research?

Response: I realize that work in IBD would be more relevant to PE than S&T, which is why it is the typical track people pursued by people getting into PE. But I feel that in IBD, I will not get significant exposure to companies and frontier and developing markets as I would in such a desk in S&T.

Its bs but can I say anything better?

I just graduated and still have no offer. I don't think companies will be officially looking for full time analysts until September.

Does anybody know if big banks will consider somebody in my position for the SA S&T programs? or it's a complete waste of time and I shouldn't even spend time on the application.
I will be applying through my school's website as well... I can still apply because my graduation date is Jan 2013 :\

Thanks.

I have the option of getting a five year BS and Masters. The BS is in quantitative finance, and the Masters would be in Financial Engineering. Would spending the extra year and getting the MFE increase my chances at getting an offer at BB S&T, HF, or even top prop trading shops?

MFE is top tier 2 if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.
