Chances for NYC BB from USC

What are the chances for me working in an NYC BB after finishing my four years at USC as an undergrad? Currently finishing my freshman year as a science major, but I plan on minoring or even switching a major. Any advice for this? Also, what kinds of internships should I be looking at for this summer or next? Would it be alright if I just did corporate science research this summer?

My end goal would be a summer analyst position my junior summer. I understand that USC is only a target for west coast BB but I really do want to work in NYC and believe I am a very competent/competitive applicant.

Right now I'm deciding on colleges to apply to and wanted to get a comparison on usc vs. vanderbilt for placement into ibd/hf. I hate the south, and have been leaning towards USC but then I found that USC is located in an absolute dump of an area, south central los angeles and that it is known as one of the most dangerous campuses on America. This has led my parents to prejudice against the school as there have been numerous murders, rapes, etc over the past couple of years and so living in that hell hole isn't really worth it unless it's actually a great school that feeds strongly into finance. Vanderbilt on the other hand, though there is crime, is in a pretty decent part of town and is higher ranked/more prestigious.

I have got some offers but have no clear ideas which to choose.

My choices are Simon business school in University of Rochester, it is Master of Finance.

Queen`s I have got the offer of Master of International Business with the double degree from Mannheim University in Germany, Master of Management

Ivey, I am still applying, it is Master of Management, I may choose the CEMS option which gives me the chance to exchange to LSE HEC or Stcokholm School of Economics. Finally I still get the CEMS degree as a plus.

USC I apply the Master of Accounting.
W&M it is Master of Accounting
Is it possilbe for me to break in finance institutions or consulting with a degree of accounting as above two?

Hey fellow aspiring/incumbent monkeys,

I have a quick question regarding what major I should choose to best set-up an investment banking gig after I graduate.

For context, I am a sophomore at the University of Southern California "Fight On!" and I am in the Marshall School of Business. I am in their joint Business Admin. & Accounting program, but I am looking into other options. Specifically, I have already completed multivariable calculus and I'm considering the Mathematical Economics or Industrial & Systems Engineering programs.

Quick summary for the tl;dr crowd -- After getting a bad GPA at my third school (yea I transferred a lot), I'm retreating back to one of my original two schools, where my third GPA won't factor in to the calculation. The choices are Michigan (Econ/math minor, non-Ross) vs. USC (Business, no minors). My Michigan transcript will mention my third institution (without grades) whereas with USC I can pretend my third school never happened. Will banks tend to ask for transcripts from every school? Or just the one you graduate from?

What companies should I look at and what kind of gpa is considered a "cut off"?

Also I am willing to move.

I am going into my sophomore year at USC as an electrical engineering major and really want to get into i-banking. I have a decent GPA (3.72), but was wondering if it would be worth me transferring to a school like Rice, UVA, UMich, Vanderbilt, Washu, Northwestern, etc in order to improve my chances of landing an internship for I-Banking. Do you think it would be of benefit to me to apply to TMT groups since I can more directly related my EE major towards it. Also would a double major in finance greatly improve my chances or would just taking a few accounting classes and learning some of the basics be enough?

Thanks

I am currently a sophomore at the University of Southern California doing engineering. I recently developed an interest in finance and I really want to purse a career in Investment banking. What are my options? I know that USC isn't a target school for most banks, but would me being an engineer make me more attractive for the jobs?

And do you think I would have any chances of landing an internship in NYC maybe in the back office after my sophomore year and then try to move onto the front office?

I'm a rising Junior, CS major at USC. I've had a few good tech internships, but I'd like to try my hand at finance before I graduate. Ideally: as a trader or researcher at a BB investment bank?

How exactly show I prepare for and go about the internship process? And what's the timeline like?

PS: My plan right now is to drop in on upper-level finance classes this fall, and read all of the recommended finance/research books. And then apply to the BB summer programs later this year through our recruiting center. What am I missing?

College

Hey, I'm a transfer for a local community college (had to go for financial and personal reasons).

Anyway, I've been accepted to USC and UNC. Waitlisted at Harvard and Amherst and rejected at Brown and Cornell. Columbia and Penn release their decisions today, but I'm not expecting much.

For USC I've been accepted into the Marshall School and UNC the College of Arts and Science. Which one would be the better choice? Also, I'm a minority so which school will be more diverse and all that? I've only been out of Texas (home state) a handful of times for conferences and extracurricular related stuff, so I'm pretty clueless about the social scenes at both schools.

So here's my situation...I applied to the UC-Berkeley (dinged), UCLA (waitlisted), and USC (accepted) FT MBA programs. I know the USC network is strong, but is it good enough to get opportunities in LA or SF IB offices (I want to stay in Cali)? Or is it worth reapplying to UCLA & UC-B next year?

Hi Fellow Monkeys!!!

Brief version of my story:

I recently graduated from USC in 2010. I majored in psychology and minored in mathematical finance with a 2.55 overall GPA. (Got high grades on Math/Econ/Finance courses, low grades on liberal arts courses)

After a couple of months job hunting after graduation, I started working at a small real estate firm in LA as a valuation analyst. It's been almost a year now. In the mean time, I interviewed with many IB/PE/Asset Management firms and rarely got second rounds. They didn't say it explicitly but I knew they probably didn't like the GPA.

I'm heading into public sector consulting following an MPP from USC and was wondering about the various public sector practices the big firms have.

Is USC considered a target school for public sector consulting? Awkwardly expressed, but I think with the school's rep and being in LA, I would have thought the chances would be relatively high?

I'm largely looking at MBB and other larger firms (Roland Berger, OW etc).

Thoughts?

So I'm moving to LA to go to the USC for their MPP. I'm trying to find a good place out in LA whilst in London. I move in August.

I've had a look on craigslist but the majority of places are pretty pricey.

Where's the best place to look? Ideally within walking distance of USC but I am flexible.

Hit me up with some sites/areas that will be most cost-effective (max I would wanna spend is $800)

Thanks guys.

Good Morning,

Was hoping I could get some advice. I'm finishing up my last semester as an undergrad at University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business - set to graduate December 2011.

I'm interning at an aerospace & defense focused investment bank, and I have a GPA of 3.80, I also have another internship in Wealth Management. I am planning on recruiting for full time analyst positions, hopefully ones that start January 2012.

Having not been through Fall recruitment before, I am not sure what to expect in terms of positions, availability, competition. Could someone familiar with this give me some advice, such as how likely is it to get an offer? What to do in the meantime? I'm trying to network with some bankers, the internship is taking up a lot of time...

Hey guys, I'd really appreciate some help. I'm currently choosing what undergraduate college to go to, and my choices are USC Marshall, Berkeley, Georgetown MSB, and NYU Stern.

In terms of the intangibles, some things about myself are that I'm not overly concerned with the social life, but at the same time I don't want to be around a bunch of people who ONLY study (which is what I feel Berkeley is like). I'm not completely sure exactly what branch of business I want to go into, but im probably leaning towards something in Finance. I'd also be fine going to the east coast or staying on the west coast for college, but in the long run I'd like to settle down in California, and probably in SoCal.

I'm a HS senior from SoCal. I am considering Georgetown, USC, and NYU.
My goal is to major in business/finance and land a job in Wallstreet in an IB/PE/HF
I've been asking people for advice and reading blogs for a couple of days now.

This is what I know of each school (both pros + cons):

USC - I've received the trustee scholarship (full scholarship) so that's obviously a major plus. It's a 20 minute drive from my house, I'll be near my family and friends. Obviously great social life. However, USC Marshall is located in the West, far from NYC and is not heavily recruited by firms in NYC. Although everyone does talks of the power of the Trojan family alumni connection

I am choosing between the two MBA programs...I was hoping to get some feedback from those that are enrolled in or graduated from either of these schools? My main purpose of the MBA program is to transition from commercial banking into IB,IM, or maybe even corp dev. Definitely would like to stay local in Southern California

Though I know rankings are very important, I'd like to know how these two programs help candidates in terms of career services, networking opportunities, and just overall experience...and the possibilities of transitioning given the available resources. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone,

I've heard back from USC and UNC Chapel Hill, and I've been accepted into both their accounting programs. I'm torn between the two, and I need your input in deciding between the two.

I aim to land a position in IBD/Big4 TAS, but I wouldn't mind doing audit if nothing else works out. However, audit is not my primary goal at the moment.

UNC gave me slightly more money, and I'm pretty sure living in Chapel Hill will be cheaper than LA. So taking into account all these factors, which school would you recommend?

I was wondering if anyone who works as a professional trader could advise me on which route to take to get a shot at a trading desk. I don't really care where as long as it has a good training program and will help me advance my career. I have been admitted to both USC for the MBA program and Claremont Graduate University MFE Program. I know they aren't very prestigious as top tier schools but even with my 740 GMAT, my undergraduate grades --2.5 GPA in History -- precluded me from the top tiers. My work experience consists of entirely financial sales as a sales rep then branch manager.

Hello folks, I was just wondering about the situation for USC Marshall undergrads in terms of IBD. The career office seems a mess, and a lot of the guys seem to get shafted and put in wealth-management divisions.

Anyone know how's the internship/job situation like in the LA/HK/international market for USC kids? I know it's non-existent on the East Coast, but I was hoping that there would be something elsewhere in IBD.

I know the answer seems obvious if I am asking you guys which one is the best in terms of getting a job after graduating, but I am also thinking of going to grad school to continue studying finance or Stanford MS&E (Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research).
To talk about my financial situation briefly, UCLA will cost me the lowest tuition since I can just stay at my parents' house.
I would like to get a job in Accounting Big 4 firms in the future. So which one do you guys think is best suitable for me?
thank you in advance for your reply :)
