Interview
The interview process unofficially started with on-campus information events and tours of the firms offices where applicants could meet with lawyers and recruiters. After the initial networking phase, resumes, cover letters and transcripts were required. Accepted applicants went through three days of interviews. The first day I met with 2 associates for 30 minutes and 2 partners for 20 minutes. This was the same on the second day. On the third day they had a reception for applicants still in contention and I met with 1 partner 1-on-1 afterwards.
The questions were entirely behavioral, no technical questions were asked throughout the entire process. Demonstrating an interest in them specifically was important.
Interview Questions
Why do you want to work at Torys. This is not an overly difficult question but I faced a lot of pushback and they wanted to ensure I had done my homework and knew specifics about the firm. A generic answer did not suffice.
"since you have an engineering background and are pursuing an MBA why do you want to work in law?" This was another question I was asked by almost every single interviewer. They wanted assurances that I was not going to work there for the summer and leave (or reject their offer for a different profession).
